Successful senior software tester with solid leadership and technical experience seeks new challenges and
opportunities in the Salt Lake City area.
Quest Diagnostics Oct, 2005 – Apr, 2016
Senior Software Quality Assurance Analyst
Upon Quest Diagnostics’ purchase of LabOne the new management structure eliminated all Software QA Team Lead
positions and leads were reallocated as Senior QA Analysts, testing and deploying projects. In this role I continued
acting in a leadership role, helping select, train and mentor new team members and created SOP documentation.
This role afforded me the opportunity to serve as Business Analyst, QA Software Engineer and Implementation
Engineer. This was a complex production environment with numerous interconnected disparate provider systems; many
of which were acquired through mergers and acquisitions. Systems in this diverse environment included MS SQL Server,
Oracle, .NET and Java. Projects came from both internal business stakeholders and external insurance and clinical
organizations.
• Worked with business and development teams to refine project requirements
• Developed test plans, created and managed test scripts for software development projects using HP Quality Center.
• Used SharePoint, Rally, and HP Quality Center to store all project related documentation
• Carried out functional, integration, regression, and load testing
• Managed user acceptance testing and communicated results
• Coordinated with clients to perform integration testing
• Provided detailed documentation of test processes and test data
• Wrote and executed SQL scripts as part of testing using both Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle
• Managed and executed the deployment processes across staging, test, and prod environments
• Coordinated with DBA team to manage database changes during deployments
• Planned and executed post-deployment validation
• Coordinated with production support team post implementation to ensure that no issues arose
• Significant experience with managing compliance to HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, and other industry standard and internal
requirements
• Developed and executed test plans for annual disaster recovery simulation and validation
LabOne (purchased by Quest Diagnostics) Nov, 2002 – Oct,
2005
Software QA Team Lead
Upon migrating and decommissioning the legacy systems from the Osborn Group to LabOne my sys admin skill set
helped me transition to a position in the recently created QA software engineering team.
The Software QA role at Labone is responsible for the deployment of updated code onto the production servers. This
work was always performed after hours or on weekends.
In my initial role as a Software Quality Assurance Analyst I was quickly promoted to Team Lead. In this dual role I
continued QA Software Engineering and supervised five software testers.
• Supervised 5 software testers while continuing to test and deploy software projects
• Coordinated with business stakeholders to set workflow priorities for my reports
• Conducted ongoing weekly employee one-on-ones
• Reviewed test case documentation of direct reports and provided coaching when needed
• Wrote and delivered annual reviews
• Assisted with the interviewing of QA applicants
• Trained newly hired software testers in departmental SDLM, SOPs, and use of team tools
• Collaborated on the drafting and revision of departmental SOP guidelines
QA Team Lead Leadership Training Courses Completed:
• Basic Principles & Proactive Listening
• Giving Feedback & Coaching
• Handling Emotions Under Pressure
• Giving Recognition
• Correcting Performance Problems
• Conducting a Collaborative Performance Review
• Personal Strategies for Navigating Change
• Gaining Commitment to Preset Goals
Software Quality Assurance Analyst
Once the legacy systems from the Osborn Group had been transitioned and decommissioned, I had several different job
opportunities at LabOne. Though I love server and network admin work, the numerous evening and weekend devoted to
the role wore on me. So, I chose a position in the recently created QA software engineering team. My sys admin skill
set really gave me quite an advantage and soon I was testing multiple systems and areas.
One unusual element to the Software QA role at Labone (and later Quest Diagnostics) is that the software tester is also
responsible for the deployment of the updated code onto the production servers. This work was always performed after
hours or on weekends. So, while I didn’t eliminate evening and weekend work, I greatly reduced it and ended up with a
much more predictable schedule. I was delighted to discover that I also really enjoyed this new role. QA Software
Engineering is much more collaborative and team oriented than system administration.
Windows Server Admin Transitional (LabOne)
Continued managing the legacy systems I moved over from the Osborn Group for about a year until the workload of the
systems I managed could be smoothly transitioned into the workflow of existing LabOne systems.
The Osborn Group (purchased by LabOne) October, 2000 – Jan, 2002
Windows Server Network Admin
Administration, installation, migration, upgrades and security of several Windows servers (running on various Compaq
Proliant platforms). The primary system (known as Starnet) provided secure B2B informational services to our many
customers (approximately 140 term life insurance companies) throughout the world, both through a “thick client”
database replication process to server systems located at some of the customer sites and through a secure IIS website.
These systems each ran Sybase SQL Anywhere 5.0 databases and maintained a connection to an Oracle database.
The clients that relied on these systems were term life insurance companies, who required a high degree of accessibility
as well as top level security to protect their applicants' personal and health information.
As the department lead on NT Systems Security prevented all IIS systems from viruses such as Code Red, Code Red II,
or the Nimda virus / worms.
Other duties included: Administration of the Development and QA labs, planning and implementation of tape backup
schedules and disaster recovery plans. In addition, managed the administration of NT domain and MS Exchange user
accounts, and the installation and configuration of production credit card authorization and billing software. Worked with
the resident Unix admin to build a dual-homed Linux router using Red Hat version 7.1 and iptables to separate two
networks.
Applebee’s International, Inc. (corporate headquarters) Mar, 1997 – Oct, 2000
Desktop Support Specialist (NT Admin Team)
Member of the NT administration team, supporting 200 local and 150 remote users in a distributed Win9x/NT
environment. Upheld a great team dynamic between the help desk, network, and server administration groups.
Responsible for:
Exchange Server and NT domain account administration • Managed purchases from vendors • Directed consultants in
their duties • Participated in Server upgrades on Proliant 2500 servers • Responsible for all “second level” support •
Created new procedures to streamline the help desk • Created client systems standards for new users • Planned and
managed the client-side implementation of AS/400 upgrade
Special Project – Corporate wide upgrade:
Planned and implemented O.S. migration to Windows 95 and MS Office ’97 (250 users). Project included the
implementation of a network infrastructure migration (Token Ring to Fast Ethernet). Developed system standards and
implementation strategies for the distribution of 200 IBM Thinkpads to home office and remote users.
Award: Employee of the Year for 1997:
Reasons cited - dedication, follow-up, and excellence in both communication and customer service.
WRS Architects, Inc. May, 1995 – Mar,
1997
Systems Administrator / AutoCAD Technician / Drafting Trainer to Architects
In this role, I supported 45-50 users. I planned, tested and implemented several network, hardware, and OS upgrades.
Since receiving viruses from partnering companies was a problem, I designed and built a secure file transfer workstation
as a sort of manual firewall to protect the network from viruses. Drafted and initiated security policies and procedures for
assorted direct connect file transfer and e-mail systems. I created step-by-step documentation of all systems and
procedures. Troubleshot, maintained and upgraded all computers, software and computer peripherals. Researched,
purchased and configured laptop computers suitable for running AutoCAD on location at job sites.
Many of the architects we hired had only drafted manually with pencil and paper. I was responsible for training these
people, often beginning with basic computer concepts and skills, with the goal of making them proficient with Microsoft
Office and the AutoCAD drafting and design software.
Henderson Engineers, Inc. August, 1993 – May, 1995
Systems Administrator / AutoCAD Technician / Drafting Trainer to Engineers
In this role, I supported 75 to 80 users in Win 3.11 / LANtastic environment. Planned and managed a company -wide
hardware and OS upgrade. A key requirement for this project was the minimization of downtime for the end users.
Upgraded, maintained and expanded a LANtastic 5.0 and 6.0 10Base2 Ethernet network, as well as all systems.
Many of the engineers we hired had only drafted manually with pencil and paper. I was responsible for
training these people, often beginning with basic computer concepts and skills, with the goal of making them
proficient with Microsoft Office and the AutoCAD drafting and design software.
Skills – Systems – Tools
