Last Friday on October 10th
, Mr. Lawrence Lee, the Vice President in HR in Greater China and
Mongolia of Hilton Worldwide, shared his HR career fulfilling his life purpose which is to encourage
people to achieve their dreams. He takes the verb “encourage” as “giving courage to”, meaning that
arouse people’s inner potential and free them from unnecessary psychological restriction by
themselves.
I strongly agree Mr. Lee’s saying that “All people are shy in a way”. In life we can easily find a “shy”
person turns out to be very talkative and knowledgeable when surrounded by close friends. Everyone
has the desire to express himself freely within his comfort zone. So HR people can really help this by
creating friendly environment of communication. Inviting ideas and giving positive feedback are
useful practices in encouraging communication.
Mr. Lee also encouraged us to achieve our own dreams. He shares with us his formula of “passion +
talent = purpose”.
Passion, according to Mr. Lee, is something that wakes you up in the morning and something you
would like to do for free. I have another interpretation for his words, which defines passion as
something you would like to do for free and for the freedom you feel when doing it. . You are self-
motivated and with whole soul dedicated. You don’t feel like working but creating and realizing your
inner ideal perfection. And that’s how passion brings prosperity.
One may have a lot of passions but limited talent, just like Einstein’s violin is his passion but
unfortunately not where his talent stands. Therefore it is necessary for everyone to figure out where
our talents stand and how we can realize it into something valuable to the world. One of the useful
methods may be the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment, which tells principal
psychological functions by which we experience the world and categories personalities into 16 types.
Through this assessment, I find out that I belong to the INFP group which is known as the “healer”.
All the descriptions assonate with me so precisely and I got to know that my personality contains
valuable talents in introversive reflection, sympathy, creativity, and optimism. Maybe I can try jobs
for us INFP idealist like writers, musicians, psychologists, and educators.
Equally important is the potential talent within us, which can only be discovered by boldly giving it a
try. I believe that everybody has a great potential to achieve. So I always say to myself that never set
limit to yourself and you can always achieve more by just giving it a try. When we are open-minded
and always prepared to explore better possibilities in life, the world will appear to us its diversity and
endless dimensions. Life is short, so live before you leave.
After a confident knowledge of our passion and a clear address of our talent, the most essential part is
to set a purpose for our life. Life purpose can be somewhat religious like “to be the salt and light on
earth”. Or else it can be as direct as Mr. Lee’s “to encourage people to achieve their dreams”. No
matter in what way of statement, it is good to believe that every one of us is put on earth for a
purpose. And it is miserable to be healthy and wealthy but don’t know what to do with life. There is a
saying that there are two most important days in life – the day when you were born and the day you
know why.
As stated by Adam Leipzig in the video Mr. Lee has brought, life purpose is about who you are, what
you do, who you do it for, what these people want and need and how you can bring about change. I
really appreciate the people in other two videos that Mr. Lee has share – they raise people up. I always
believe that everything that is worth doing well is worth doing. And I want to serve the world where I
can mostly contribute, being the light and salt on earth.
