2. MONARCHS
Dear Athletes & Friends,
Macomb Athletics has a 44 year history with 6 NJCAA Championships, 42 Region XII Championships
and 65 MCCAA and conference titles to its credit. The 2009-2010 season was no exception with six of
our seven athletic teams representing Macomb in the Region XII Tournament. The entire coaching staff
and all of the student athletes work tirelessly to achieve success in their respective sports. These individu-
als personify tenacity, hard work and diligence. As an Athletic Director, there is no greater feeling than
to represent a program that exemplifies integrity and reaches to exceed its own expectations every year!
Highlighting Outstanding Achievements:
Macomb’s Men’s Cross Country team finished the season ranked twenty-third in the Final NJCAA poll.
The Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country team sent 3 individuals to the NJCAA Nationals in Peoria, Il-
linois in November 2009 and Carissa Hudson of our women’s cross country team earned All-American
honors.
The Women’s Softball team led by four veterans and a very talented group of freshman finished in third
place in the conference after winning fifteen of their last sixteen games. Their incredible run earned the
team a spot in Region XII Tournament in Battle Creek, Michigan, finishing in third place.
Most importantly, “student” is always a precursor to being an “athlete” and at Macomb we stress aca-
demic advancement as well as athletic achievement. An example of our success is the four members of
our cross country team: Carissa Hudson, Paul Schultz, Chelsea Myers and Brett Golze. Each of these ath-
letes maintained a 4.0 grade point average during the season and for their tremendous efforts earned the
prestigious honor of being named NJCAAAcademic All-America. Our volleyball player Dana Szymko-
wicz also maintained a 4.0 grade point average and was named a Distinguished Academic All-American.
Moreover, the Men’s Cross Country team finished the season ranked eleventh in the top twenty-five
academically with an overall grade point average of 3.435. Also, the Women’s team finished in the top
twenty-five academically ranked twelfth with an overall grade point average of 3.592. Both teams re-
ceived the honor of being selected to the NJCAAAcademic All-American Team.
As academic years seem to fly by, our annual banquet allows us to come together one last time to share
and support each others’ efforts and accomplishments. I want to thank all who gave so much of them-
selves to make this year and its successes a reality. We have a remarkable “team” of departmental staff,
intercollegiate coaches and student athletes that always seem to come together for one common goal; to
make Macomb College Athletics the best it can be!
Thank you and I hope you enjoyed the banquet.

Bound for
postseason play
10/27
Wrapping up the regular season last night,
the Macomb Lady Monarchs stretched
their winning streak to six against Henry
Ford CC. Macomb won in three sets by
a score of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-12. In the
last week, Macomb has faced some tough
competition and ending the season on a 6-0
win streak is impressive. The veterans of
the team have been omnipresent and they
continue to lead the team in each statistical
category. Stephanie Pietrzak led the team
with kills with 11 with a hitting percentage
of .600, 2 aces and 6 digs. Christina Seward
continues to flex her athletic expertise reg-
istering 24 assists with 5 aces, 2 blocks and
6 digs. Filling up the stat sheet was none
other than Katelyn Cosio recording 8 kills
with a hitting percentage of .800, 2 aces, 2
blocks and 4 digs. Rounding out Macomb’s
impressive play was Brianna Giordano
compiling 12 digs. Macomb heads into the
postseason with a record of 31-5 overall
and 12-2 in the conference.
“The intensity of our practices has in-
creased, which has followed through to our
games. We follow through with every play
and aren’t afraid to play aggressive and
that has really helped us pull some wins!”-
Stephanie Pietrzak
Dig Pink Breast Cancer
Awareness Match
10/20
October is Breast CancerAwareness Month
and to honor all that have been affected by
breast cancer, last night’s match was the
Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Match!
In front of a sellout crowd, the 10th ranked
Macomb Lady Monarchs battled against
the Oakland Lady Raiders as both teams in
pre-game warm-ups gave salutes to some-
one close to them that has dealt with breast
cancer. Dressed in pink, Macomb avenged
one of their two conference losses by beat-
ing Oakland in four. The scores of the
matches were 25-22, 25-13, 15-25 and 25-
20. The middle matches were lopsided but
the first and the last match proved that both
teams are a force to be reckoned with! The
most entertaining of all was the last match
as Macomb was down some six points dur-
ing the match and rallied to win the game.
Turning in dominating performances was
freshman Danielle Meyer with 6 kills with
a hitting percentage of .750, 7 blocks and
3 aces. Sophomores Jessica Rombach
and Katelyn Cosio were equally menac-
ing around the net. Rombach registered 5
kills with a hitting percentage of .563 and
2 blocks and Cosio recorded 9 kills with
a hitting percentage of .500, 2 aces and 2
blocks. Macomb improves to 26-5 overall
and 7-2 in the conference. Macomb will
battle with Schoolcraft on October 22nd at
7pm in the Sports & Expo Center
Strong Week
After a surprising loss to a conference foe,
the Macomb Lady Monarchs Volleyball
team responded with an undefeated week
going 6-0 last week. They played well and
defeated Schoolcraft and Mott in confer-
ence play. But the impressive wins were
this past weekend at the Kalamazoo Val-
ley Invitational. Macomb swept the 10th
ranked Kalamazoo Valley, Vincennes, Kel-
logg and the 16th ranked McHenry. Ma-
comb was led by the impressive play of the
tremendous trio of sophomores Stephanie
Pietrzak and Katelyn Cosio and freshman
Jaimie Brynaert. For the week, Pietrzak
compiled 69 Kills, 27 Digs, 22 Aces, Cosio
recorded 56 Kills, 28 Digs, 18 Blocks and
Brynaet registered 59 Kills, 42 Digs for the
week. With such impressive wins Macomb
earned the ranking of 10th in NJCAA poll
and improved their record to 24-4 overall
and 5-1 in the conference. Macomb plays at
St. Clair CC on Tuesday Oct. 13th
Battle for 1st place
9/17
On Thursday night the 17th of September,
the battle for first place in the MCCAA
Eastern Division placed the Macomb Lady
Monarchs against the St. Clair Lady Skip-
pers. Macomb came prepared to capture
first place and it was evident in their play.
The Lady Monarchs started out fast in each
match but St. Clair made it a game. How-
ever, in the end, Macomb was too much for
the Lady Skippers winning each match by
a score of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-22. Lead-
ing the monarch mayhem against St. Clair
was none other than sophomore Jessica
“Rambunctious Rombi” Rombach. Roam-
ing around the net and with each rotation
St. Clair didn’t have an answer for her de-
fensive maneuvers nor her offensive prow-
ess. Rombach was the most efficient player
with 9 kills and a hitting percentage of .429.
Adding to the success of Macomb was
sophomores Katelyn Cosio and Stephanie
Pietrzak. Cosio registered a hitting percent-
age of .411 with 9 kills, while Pietrzak had
13 kills on a .375 hitting percentage. With
such a dominating performance Macomb
looks to move up in the NJCAA poll, im-
proving their overall record to 15-3 and 2-0
in the conference. Macomb’s next game
is at home on Tuesday, September 22 at
7:00pm against Mott CC.
“I played alright but it wasn’t my best but
as a team we executed well and never re-
linquished the fight to achieve our goal of
securing the win”-Jessica Rombach

All-American
The mark of a true champion is their perse-
verance to overcome obstacles. This statement
embodies Carissa Hudson as she battled to
return to form after going down with a stress
fracture last season. For any athlete watching
from the sideline is very difficult! So when
this season began Hudson set out to prove she
was one of the best runners in the nation. Run-
ning with determination in every race, she ran
to achieve the status of All-American. On Sat-
urday, November 14th Hudson ran one of her
best times of the season in the 5K. She finished
24th with a time of 19:32 earning her the pres-
tigious honor of being called an All-American
at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships
in Peoria, IL. Salute to Carissa Hudson a true
competitor!
“Hudson has worked very hard to achieve
her goals and she has led the team on and
off the field as our captain and I couldn’t be
more proud of her success this season.” –Head
Coach Kim Renas
Academic All-American
Student-athlete is a word that we often hear
but the word student goes unnoticed. How-
ever, in the case of these athletes, their aca-
demic achievement is just as important as
athletic advancement. Macomb’s Men’s Cross
Country team was selected as one of the NJ-
CAAAcademic Teams’of the Year. The men’s
team placed 11th among the national rankings
with a team GPA of 3.435. Macomb’s Wom-
en’s Cross Country team was also selected as
one of the NJCAA Academic Teams’ of the
Year. The women’s team placed 12th nation-
ally with a GPA of 3.592. Brett Golze, Paul
Schultz, Carissa Hudson and Chelsea Myers
all maintained a 4.0 GPA for the fall semes-
ter. For their efforts, they were selected to the
NJCAA Academic All-America Team. Con-
gratulations are also in order to William Ger-
stenberger, Ciara Poppe, Nicholas Kirkwood,
Kelsey Wright, Olivia Tweten and Kaitlyn
Kreger for their academic achievement. All of
these individulas were selected to the NJCAA
Academic Cross Country All-American Team
for maintaining a GPA above 3.0.

Sophomore Day
2/20
Saturday’s game honored Macomb’s grad-
uating sophomores as they played their last
home game a Macomb Monarch. “Big”
Brad Balkema, David “The Defender”
Gilliam, Adam “Skip” Willis and Bran-
den “Easy” McKenney were resilient and
worked hard through the ups and downs
of a college basketball season. More im-
portantly, their growth off the court is im-
measurable and holds more significance
than dribbling a ball. As the pregame cer-
emonies concluded, the Macomb Mon-
archs were ready to battle with the Kirtland
Firebirds. Macomb assumed control of the
game and never looked back. The Mon-
archs won the game by a score of 80-67,
snapping their five game losing streak. Ma-
comb only turned the ball over 12 times.
The Monarch defense annihilated the Fire-
birds on the boards 45-27, forced 18 turn-
overs and held Kirtland to 36% shooting
from the floor. Macomb’s All-Time leader
in points scored-Branden “Easy” McKen-
ney recorded 34 points, 11 rebounds and 3
steals. Alan Hardy complied 15 points, 8
rebounds and 4 blocks. Terrell “Rell-Deal”
Williams added 10 points and 7 assists.
Macomb improves to 5-11 in the confer-
ence and 13-15 overall as they head to the
Regional Tournament at Mott College in
Flint, MI.
Momentum Swing
1/2
The Macomb Monarchs were charged and
ready to battle with the St. Clair Skip-
pers. The Skippers opened up early with
a 15-4 lead but Macomb closed the gap to
two points at intermission on 43% shoot-
ing. In the second half, St. Clair went on
another run but yet again the Monarchs
solidified their defense by running a zone
and sparked a comeback. Macomb began
to get open looks and capitalized on every
opportunity. With 5:19 remaining in the
game, Alan Hardy scored on a sweet give
and go from Brad Balkema. Hardy’s dunk
energized the team putting Macomb ahead
by two but the basket was quickly nullified
due to the technical foul Hardy picked up
for hanging on the rim! From that point the
momentum shifted and St. Clair went on
a 15-3 run. The end result was a Macomb
loss by a score of 72-62. Branden “Easy”
McKenney opened up the arsenal by shoot-
ing several jump shots, compiling 24 points
and 13 rebounds. Brad Balkema continues
be a work horse. Balkema finished with 10
points and 11 rebounds while Alan Hardy
added 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Macomb’s record is 3-2 in the conference
and 11-6 overall.
Holiday Inn Thunder
Bay Classic
12-11&12
The Macomb Monarchs traveled to Alpena
to play in the Holiday Inn Thunder Bay
Classic. Macomb was matched up against
Alpena CC in the first game and started
out very sluggish. The suspense came in
the last seconds of the second half. Ma-
comb and Alpena for the last five minutes
of the game continued to trade baskets. Al-
pena seemed to have the game won as they
drove to the basket and scored on a lay-up
with five point two seconds remaining.
Macomb advanced the ball and called their
final timeout with two seconds remaining.
Checking in the game was freshman marks-
men Anthony Griffith, Griffith only played
limited minutes but Coach Henry Washing-
ton knew he could count on Griffith. Ma-
comb inbounded the ball; Griffith caught
it on the wing and with pinpoint accuracy
sank a three pointer as time expired and
gave Macomb the win by a score of 73-72.
Macomb moved on to play Muskegon for
the tournament trophy. The scouting report
on Muskegon was that they were an ath-
letic team that couldn’t shoot. So Macomb
simply played zone defense and forced 20
turnovers, bad shots and caused Muskegon
to shoot 35% from the floor. Macomb won
the Holiday Inn Thunder Bay Classic and
hoisted the trophy by beating Muskegon
78-59. A herculean effort by tournament
MVP Branden “Easy” McKenney truly
showed his ability to score easily! McK-
enney physically imposed his dominance
against Muskegon and for the weekend,
McKenney averaged a phenomenal 27.5
points and 12 rebounds. Playing Pippen
to his Jordan was Alan Hardy. Hardy was
also named to the All-Tournament team by
averaging 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds.
Macomb improved their record to 9-3 over-
all and will face Oakland CC on the 16th of
December at 7:30pm.
8.0 Seconds
12/2
Picking up the action of the Macomb
Monarchs game against the Schoolcraft
Ocelots with thirty-two seconds left in the
game; being down as many as ten points
with four minutes to left Macomb fought
back. Macomb was down by two with
thirty-two seconds remaining, instinctively
Coach Henry Washington called his last
and final timeout. Gathering the team in the
huddle, Coach Washington looked into the
eyes of tired athletes and began to do as he
has done for the last 30 years, diagram a
play! Choosing his players as the options
to take the last shot, an unlikely hero was
the culprit to heave the game winning shot.
Allowing the clock to tick down to eight
seconds, Macomb’s first three options were
guarded heavily. Amidst a hostile home
crowd freshman guard “Money Making”
Mitch Michalski (pronounced My-house-
key) dribbled right and crossed over left
with a hand in his face pulled the trigger
on a three pointer that sank the hopes of
Schoolcraft, giving the Monarchs a one
point lead. After deliberation at the table
the referees concluded that eight seconds
remained on the clock instead of the six
point seven seconds as the clock showed!
On Schoolcraft’s ensuing possession, they
advanced the ball and there was Michalski
again causing the pressure on the Ocelot’s
point guard forcing him to lose the ball.
Alan Hardy recovered the ball and sealed
the game on a break away dunk as time ex-
pired and Macomb won by a score of 69-
66. Macomb improves their overall record
to 6-3 and 1-0 in the conference. Macomb
looks to continue their winning streak at
home on the 9th against Rochester College
at 7pm.

Redemption
2/17
In an earlier season match up between the
Lady Monarchs of Macomb and the Lady
Pioneers of Delta, Macomb was mortified
as they imploded down the stretch and
loss the game 89-75 in overtime. The re-
match would prove to be a different story!
Armed with motivation to avenge the pre-
vious game and Coach Ritchie’s constant
preparation; Macomb played with tenac-
ity and raced to a 66-58 victory. Macomb
held the rebounding edge 48-36, forced
18 turnovers and quelled the usually lethal
shooting of Delta to 12% from behind the
arc and 28% overall. The backcourt play
of freshman guards Chanequa Hills and
Jasmine Flanagan proved to be pivotal at
setting the tempo and seizing control of
the game. Spearheading the charge was
Chanequa “Handles the Pill” Hills; Hills
played exquisitely compiling 23 points, 10
rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 1 block.
Flanagan added 9 points but was essential
in driving to basket and placing Delta in
foul trouble. On the block creating havoc
were Kisha Adray and Brittany Chapman.
Adray had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 fero-
cious blocks; while Chapman dominated
the boards with 11 and 6 points. The Lady
Monarchs improve their record to 6-9 in
the conference and 10-13 overall.
Run & Gun
2/6
The Macomb Lady Monarchs battled with
the Henry Ford Lady Hawks on Saturday
and were beaten by a score of 88-74. From
the opening tip, Henry Ford ran the run
and gun offense of the Phoenix Suns. In
the first half alone, Henry Ford took 54
shots and off three pointers they scored
42 points for the game. Macomb out re-
bounded Henry Ford 48-41 but turned the
ball over 36 times. Even though Macomb
shot 49% from the floor for the game, the
Lady Monarchs couldn’t keep up with the
pace of Henry Ford. Chanequa “Handles
the Pill” Hills drove the ball to the cup ef-
fortlessly on her way to wonderful after-
noon. She shot 77% from the floor compil-
ing 31 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 4
steals. Meredith Smith dropped 11 points,
5 rebounds and 4 assists. Macomb’s re-
cord falls to 4-9 in the conference and 8-13
overall.
Press Breaker
1/6
The women’s basketball team was pumped
and ready to play after being on a two game
skid! Macomb battled with a very tough
Henry Ford team. Henry Ford’s stifling de-
fensive pressure rattled the Lady Monarchs
and forced Macomb into 32 turnovers.
However, shooting 52% from the field and
Coach Ritchie’s game adjustments helped
Macomb prevail to a win by a score of 81-
70. Every time Henry Ford made a run the
German Assassin Jessica Rombach shoot-
ing from her Russian Kalashnikov, dropped
stepped into the paint and obliterated any
chance of a comeback. Rombach went 16
of 21 from the floor, scoring a total of 33
points, 7 rebounds and 1 block. Meredith
Smith compiled 10 points, 6 assists, 2
steals and 1 block. The Lady Monarchs im-
prove their record to 2-4 in the conference
and 6-8 overall.

Break Out the Broom
4/29
On Thursday, April 29th, the Macomb
Monarchs hosted the Davenport Panthers.
The Monarchs assumed their regal position
upon the throne thwarting the efforts of a
Panthers’ coup. In the earlier game, sopho-
more Kyle Alef was ‘as cool as the other
side of the pillow’! Alef pitched a complete
game only allowing 2 hits and striking out
9 batters. In the second inning the desig-
nated hitter Michael Wood went yard for a
solo homerun giving him his fourth homer
of the season. Alex Hacias continues to be
Mr. reliable as he registered a RBI-single.
Mike Romanchik and Jonathon Nelson
also recorded RBI’s. The end result was
Macomb winning the game 6-1. In the late
game, Macomb defeated Davenport 7-4.
Joel Lange pitched five and a third innings
with 6 K’s and received the win. Freshman
Johnny Hackett went 2-4 with a RBI. On
Saturday, May 1st, Macomb hit the road
for the rematch with Davenport in Grand
Rapids, Michigan. The Monarchs did not
disappoint as they smashed the Panthers
18-3 and 6-3. Macomb improves its overall
record to 13-26.
Sweep

Macomb scored 6 runs in the fourth and
Cory Amble added 2 singles with 2 RBI’s.

Kyle Alef earned him the win. In the sec-
ond game Macomb continued to showcase
their talent to manufacture runs by winning
8-2. Macomb scored 4 runs in the third on
the incredible play of the “Russian Czar”
Nicholas Tomilenko. Tomilenko went 4-4
with 4 singles, 2 RBI’s and 2 stolen bases.

earned the win. Macomb improves their
record to 6-12 in the conference and 8-21

contest Macomb crushed Lansing in five
innings by a score of 20-3. In the top of
the first inning Lansing scored three earned
runs on walks. In the bottom of the first,
reminiscent to the 1981 Phil Collins song,
“In the Air Tonight”; Macomb inhaled and
exploded with 10 runs in the first. The
spark began with the DH Alex “Haymaker”
Hacias and he finished the contest going
3-3 with 2 RBI’s. Macomb’s catcher, Josh
Andreycak, produced at the plate with 3
doubles and 5 RBI’s. Steve Pistono earned

33. Down
4/20
The Macomb Monarchs were ready to
avenge an earlier season loss against the
Oakland Raiders; however the thought
didn’t materialize onto the field of play. The
first contest Macomb was pounded, losing
the game by a score of 8-2. All three of Ma-
comb’s pitchers were roughed up over the
course of the game.Apulse registered in the
third inning when Lynnsey Norat swung to
a gap and recorded a triple. On the next at
bat, Lexi Pinelli had an RBI scoring Norat
from third base. The other run came in the
fifth when Katrina VanDenBoom lowered
the boom for a solo homerun. In the second
contest, the only run scored was by Paige
Henley’s solo homerun in the third. The
end result was Macomb losing 4-1. Ma-
comb’s record falls to 3-7 in the conference
and 19-17 overall.
Win…Win
4/25
The Macomb Monarchs faced a tough slate
of games this past weekend. Winning all of
the games would catapult them back into
contention for a post season tournament
berth. These tough young women did not
disappoint. On Friday, the 23rd, Macomb
hosted Indiana Tech. Behind the lights
out pitching of freshman Emily “Wicked”
Wickerham, Macomb beat Tech 1-0 in the
first game. Wickerham pitched a complete
game, striking out five and only allowing
two hits. Freshman Korine Farmer was the
difference at the plate, swinging to a gap
and getting a RBI in the bottom of the third.
In the late game, Macomb showed the same
determination to win as they showed in
the earlier game. Macomb was behind on
the scoreboard 2-0 until freshman Korine
Farmer took charged and bashed the ball
to deep right field for a RBI triple. On the
next at bat Katrina VanDenBoom recorded
a RBI double, scoring Farmer. Deadlocked
at two in the bottom of the fourth, Kayla
“Ice” Kubiski stepped to the plate for a
RBI single breaking the tie. After this, the
flood gates opened and adding to mayhem
was a solo homerun by Farmer in the bot-
tom of the sixth inning. The end result was
Macomb winning 9-2. Finishing the week-
end, Macomb traveled to Alpena for a win
fest! Macomb won every game- 14-2, 9-1,
10-2 and 11-2. With this spectacular week-
end Macomb has moved into third place in
the MCCAA conference. Macomb’s record
improves to 8-8 in conference and 26-18
overall.
Onslaught
4/27
The Macomb Monarchs continued their win
streak yesterday as they hosted the St. Clair
Skippers. In the earlier game, Macomb
found their rhythm in the bottom of the
second when “Boomer” Katrina VanDen-
Boom stepped to the plate and surveyed the
pitcher and connected for a homerun-RBI.
Macomb wasn’t done with their offensive
mayhem. In the fourth inning, before her
at bat Paige Johnson said she wanted to hit
a homerun and low and behold she did just
that. With two of her teammates on base,
Johnson hit a 2 RBI homerun. Then a few
batters later Lexi Pinelli recorded the same
feat as she knocked in two and hit the long
ball. The inning was capped off by the 2
RBI’s scored by Kory Farmer. The end
result was Macomb wining the game 9-0
in five innings. Paige Henley got the win
striking out 2 and only allowing 4 hits. In
the late game the onslaught continued as
Macomb held heavy bats and beat St. Clair
7-1. Lexi Pinelli was consistent in her play.
For the game she registered 3 RBI’s with 2
singles. Paige Johnson added 2 RBI’s. Em-
ily Wickerham pitched a complete game
and locked in to the opposing batters, strik-
ing out 7 and allowing 5 hits. The Mighty
Monarchs are on an eight game win streak
and improved their record to 10-8 in the
conference and 28-18 overall.
Spring Trip
There were several uncertainties entering
the season on whether the softball team
could mesh and produce at a high level.
All of those questions were answered by
winning 11 of the 16 games scheduled in
Cocoa Beach, FL. The young women of
Macomb won six straight games before
suffering their first loss to North Iowa. In
those first six contests the bats were heavy
and Macomb out scored the opposition
49-5. Leading the charge was freshman
outfielder Kory Farmer. For the entire trip,
Farmer amassed 23 RBI’s, 2 homers, 3
stolen bases with a batting average of .460
and a fielding percentage of .938. A pair
of infielders Katrina VanDenBoom and
