4DX AND MOBILE
LEARNING
At Lamar University
THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION
1. Focus on the wildly important
2. Act on the lead measures
3. Keep a compelling scoreboard
4. Create a cadence of accountability
FOCUS ON THE WILDLY IMPORTANT
Wildly Important Goal (WIG): Ten faculty members
incorporate at least 3 instances of mobile learning
technologies and BYOD techniques into their
curriculum and assignments, per course, by Fall 2017.
ACT ON THE LEAD MEASURES
Lead measures:
• Faculty research and discuss the
latest trends in mobile learning and
BYOD
• Faculty experiment with the latest
mobile apps or BYOD techniques by
building a course assignment or
activity using them.
• Faculty lead presentations that
share their personal experiences
with mobile apps and BYOD.
Lag measure:
• Increased use of mobile apps and
BYOD techniques in the classroom
KEEP A COMPELLING SCOREBOARD
The scoreboard:
• My colleagues and I will use a digital assessment, such as a
Google form, to survey faculty on the use of mobile apps
and BYOD techniques in the classroom. The survey will rate
the number of instances, types of applications, and details
about apps, services, and techniques used.
• The data from the survey will be published on our
community website (Mobile Learning at Lamar) as well as
displayed in the Digital Learning Center lab, that is utilized
as an on-campus training location.
CREATE A CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Weekly, 20 minute
meetings (WIG meetings)
will be scheduled where my
colleagues, faculty members
and I will:
• Review faculty's prior
commitments to using mobile
apps and BYOD techniques in
the classroom
• Review the scoreboard -
discuss how we are/are not
meeting lead/lag measures
• Faculty plan new commitments
to using mobile apps and
BYOD techniques in the
classroom

STAGE 1 – GETTING CLEAR
Getting Clear - It's important
for the leaders and team
members to have a clear
understanding of the goal, the
lead measures and how they
will be tracked and scored.
Initially, my colleagues and I
will meet with faculty (our
team) to:
• Present our WIG, model use of mobile apps
and BYOD techniques
• Identify the lead measures and provide
guidance for faculty on how to perform the
vital behaviors
• Explain the scoreboard, what it measures and
how the faculty will drive the progress
• Make commitments and schedule our first
weekly WIG session
STAGE 2 - LAUNCH
Launch - My colleagues
and I will hold a formal
kickoff meeting to launch
the faculty into action on
our WIG
• Remind faculty to focus on their lead
measures and how they can fulfill
their commitments
• Use formal/informal or opinion
leaders to model using mobile apps
and BYOD techniques
• Identify the potentials and resisters,
those that struggle at first or those
that don't want to get on board
STAGE 3 - ADOPTION
Adoption - Once we
reach this stage it will
be important for me as
the leader to:
• Ensure faculty are researching mobile apps
and BYOD techniques
• Ensure faculty are actively incorporating
mobile apps and BYOD into assignments and
activities
• Provide extra training and mentoring for the
potentials and resisters
• Make minor adjustments to lead measures if
necessary and address any concerns or issues
• Continue to survey faculty and chart progress
on the scoreboard
STAGE 4 - OPTIMIZATION
Optimization - Hopefully at this
stage faculty are excited and
fully engaged with
incorporating mobile apps and
BYOD in the classroom. As the
leader I can optimize their
performance by:
• Continued mentoring,
encouragement and support
• Recognizing and rewarding
those faculty that creatively
incorporate mobile learning
techniques
• Celebrate our successes when
goals are reached
STAGE 5 - HABIT
Habit - I believe if we stick to the
4DX process by continually
seeking to move the lead
measures toward reaching our
WIG and commit to the WIG
sessions, it will soon become
habitual and we can continue on
to execute our next WIG. My
colleagues and I would:
• Provide a celebration for the
faculty to honor our
achievements and meeting our
WIG
• Move on to our next WIG using
the same process

  • 1. 4DX AND MOBILE LEARNING At Lamar University
  • 2. THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION 1. Focus on the wildly important 2. Act on the lead measures 3. Keep a compelling scoreboard 4. Create a cadence of accountability
  • 3. FOCUS ON THE WILDLY IMPORTANT Wildly Important Goal (WIG): Ten faculty members incorporate at least 3 instances of mobile learning technologies and BYOD techniques into their curriculum and assignments, per course, by Fall 2017.
  • 4. ACT ON THE LEAD MEASURES Lead measures: • Faculty research and discuss the latest trends in mobile learning and BYOD • Faculty experiment with the latest mobile apps or BYOD techniques by building a course assignment or activity using them. • Faculty lead presentations that share their personal experiences with mobile apps and BYOD. Lag measure: • Increased use of mobile apps and BYOD techniques in the classroom
  • 5. KEEP A COMPELLING SCOREBOARD The scoreboard: • My colleagues and I will use a digital assessment, such as a Google form, to survey faculty on the use of mobile apps and BYOD techniques in the classroom. The survey will rate the number of instances, types of applications, and details about apps, services, and techniques used. • The data from the survey will be published on our community website (Mobile Learning at Lamar) as well as displayed in the Digital Learning Center lab, that is utilized as an on-campus training location.

CREATE A CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY Weekly, 20 minute meetings (WIG meetings) will be scheduled where my colleagues, faculty members and I will: • Review faculty's prior commitments to using mobile apps and BYOD techniques in the classroom • Review the scoreboard - discuss how we are/are not meeting lead/lag measures • Faculty plan new commitments to using mobile apps and BYOD techniques in the classroom

  • 8. STAGE 1 – GETTING CLEAR Getting Clear - It's important for the leaders and team members to have a clear understanding of the goal, the lead measures and how they will be tracked and scored. Initially, my colleagues and I will meet with faculty (our team) to: • Present our WIG, model use of mobile apps and BYOD techniques • Identify the lead measures and provide guidance for faculty on how to perform the vital behaviors • Explain the scoreboard, what it measures and how the faculty will drive the progress • Make commitments and schedule our first weekly WIG session
  • 9. STAGE 2 - LAUNCH Launch - My colleagues and I will hold a formal kickoff meeting to launch the faculty into action on our WIG • Remind faculty to focus on their lead measures and how they can fulfill their commitments • Use formal/informal or opinion leaders to model using mobile apps and BYOD techniques • Identify the potentials and resisters, those that struggle at first or those that don't want to get on board
  • 10. STAGE 3 - ADOPTION Adoption - Once we reach this stage it will be important for me as the leader to: • Ensure faculty are researching mobile apps and BYOD techniques • Ensure faculty are actively incorporating mobile apps and BYOD into assignments and activities • Provide extra training and mentoring for the potentials and resisters • Make minor adjustments to lead measures if necessary and address any concerns or issues • Continue to survey faculty and chart progress on the scoreboard
  • 11. STAGE 4 - OPTIMIZATION Optimization - Hopefully at this stage faculty are excited and fully engaged with incorporating mobile apps and BYOD in the classroom. As the leader I can optimize their performance by: • Continued mentoring, encouragement and support • Recognizing and rewarding those faculty that creatively incorporate mobile learning techniques • Celebrate our successes when goals are reached
  • 12. STAGE 5 - HABIT Habit - I believe if we stick to the 4DX process by continually seeking to move the lead measures toward reaching our WIG and commit to the WIG sessions, it will soon become habitual and we can continue on to execute our next WIG. My colleagues and I would: • Provide a celebration for the faculty to honor our achievements and meeting our WIG • Move on to our next WIG using the same process
