Facebook has nearly a billion and a half users, of every imaginable age, race, nationality, and profession, which means it offers an unbeatable advertising opportunity for savvy marketers.
Facebook ads are unique in that they let you target your audience by age, gender, ethnicity, or even relationship status, so you can pinpoint only Facebook users who are in your target market. They are ideal for small businesses, because they are effective, easy to create, and surprisingly affordable.
Are you new to Facebook advertising? Don't worry. In this webinar, we will walk you through everything you need to know to create your first Facebook ad.
Now, before you can run a Facebook ad, you need to have a Facebook business page already established.
Creating a page is free, and takes only minutes. If you need more information on how to setup a Facebook Business Page, you can visit our Free resource section of Social Media How-Tos at www.Boostability.com/Boost-U
Now, let’s get started creating your first Facebook ad…
To follow along, you should be logged into Facebook as the user currently managing your business pages. In our example, it is a personal Facebook page for a user named Kate Smith.
When you click on the top right corner of your Facebook page, you will see a drop-down menu where you can see all the pages you manage under this username.
From there, scroll down to click on “Create Ads”
Before you can build an ad, you will need to create your ad campaign.
You will need to begin by choosing an objective. From this window, you can choose many different objectives.
Some of these choices include:
1- Boost Your Post which gives a little “engagement boost” to a post already on your page
2- Promote your page which will help get more followers on your Facebook page
And 3- Send people to your website which helps to drive visitors to a site off Facebook.
These options and more are all listed in the Objectives section.

Don’t feel overwhelmed by all the types of objectives. For now, just stick to the top 3 choices. These are the easiest to manage and most often used objectives for anyone just starting out. Once you become more familiar with Facebook advertising, you can branch out and explore these other objectives and how they can help your business.
Down the left-hand side of your screen you will see an area with the words:
Campaigns, Ad Account, Ad Set, and Ads.
You can always refer to the left-hand side bar to monitor your progress in the ad campaign sign up process.
Once you select your objective, simply select the desired page you want this ad campaign to run for (if you have more then one), name your campaign, and click “Create Ad Account”
Now we move right into creating your first ad.
Step 1 is creating your ad account.
You will need to select your currency, time zone, account name, and country.
Step 2 is choosing your audience. This is what makes Facebook advertising so valuable. You can narrow your target audience by age, country, language, gender, and many other factors. If you choose to target by location, a map will populate that will show you the area that you select.
Below this first box is a second targeting box labeled "Detailed Targeting."
This box lets you target Facebook users by their demographics, interests, behaviors, and other factors. Click on any selection for more detailed choices.
For instance, when you click on "Interests“ as the general target, it will show you a drop down menu that looks something like this. Within this menu, you can any of these general interests, such as Entertainment, Family, or Food and Drink.

Step 3 is to set the budget for your ad campaign. You can set a daily limit or a lifetime budget.
You can set it to run continuously or choose start and end dates.
Caution: when starting out, be EXTREMLY aware of which type of budget you have selected so you don’t overspend without realizing it.
. You can also choose whether you want to pay by the impression (for the widest audience) or by clicks on your link (for the most interested audience).
As you modify your settings, the estimated ad reach numbers will change to reflect the new settings.
Step 4 is the fun part. You get to design your Facebook advertisement. You can include up to five images, which works well for a product or service with multiple parts or stages. Otherwise, a single image may be more effective.
Make sure you include your website URL, and don't forget a call to action!
Press that big green button labelled, "Place Order."
Step 5: Facebook will ask you for your billing information. Decide if you want to pay by PayPal credit card. And, once your information is processed, your ad campaign will be active.
Congratulations! You have created your first Facebook ad. You are well on your way to marketing success, because Facebook advertisements are an easy and effective way to reach the audience you want at a price you can afford.
For more information about advertising on Facebook, you can click on the arrow in the top right hand corner of your profile screen and select “Advertising on Facebook.” This page will walk you through a deeper set of details on how Facebook advertising works and creating your first ad.
