FAMILY
 A group of persons united by ties of marriage, blood
or adoption; constituting a single household; interacting
and communicating with each other in their respective
social roles of husband and wife, mother and father,
son and daughter, brother and sister; and creating and
maintaining a common culture.

Family members need not be bound by
legal marriage or by blood or adoption.

HOUSEHOLD
 A group of persons living under one roof and sharing
the same kitchen and housekeeping arrangements.
 Not relayed by marriage, blood or adoption
 Not engaged in the performance of familial roles
 Example: boarding house
CLASSIFICATIONS:
Based on internal organization or
membership, families may be classified into two:

• Nuclear Family
• Extended Family
NUCLEAR FAMILY
Consists typically of a married man and woman with
their offspring. (Murdock)
 Primary unit of all types of families and is considered

the basic building block in family structures
 Classified into two types:
• Family of orientation
• Family of procreation
NUCLEAR FAMILY
 Family of Orientation
• Consists of the individual, his parent and all his
siblings
• The family where the individual was born and reared

 Family of Procreation
• Consists of the individual, his spouse, and all his
children.
• The family which the individual was established by
his marriage.
NUCLEAR FAMILY
 Compound or composite families
• When nuclear families are combined in various ways to
form larger familial groupings
 Polygamous family
• Combination of nuclear families through the extension
of the husband-wife bond as a result of plural
marriages
• Consists of a person and all his or her families of
procreation
EXTENDED FAMILY
When a number of nuclear families are linked
together by virtue of the kinship bond between
parents and children and/or between siblings.
Kinship bond makes the extended family
continuous generation after generation,
