2. What is a Poster?
A POSTER is a persuasive piece of artwork designed to
communicate a message using a combination of graphic
symbols such as lettering and illustration.
•It is a promotion for an idea, company, product,
organization or an event placed in a public space for mass
consumption.
3. What does a Poster do?
• A poster is designed to be eye catching and informative.
• It must be persuasive enough to make the viewer want to do what it is saying.
• To be persuasive a Poster must do three things:
1. Alerts
2. Informs
3. Appeals

4. 1. A Poster ALERTS…
In order for a poster to alert a viewer,
• It must be SEEN first before it can be READ.
•It ATTRACTS your attention. STOP to
LOOK and READ.
•Bold in design
•Colourful
5. 2. A Poster INFORMS…
• A poster gives information.
•The information must be SIMPLE and TO THE POINT for
busy people and passersby in vehicles to be able to read.
•The information is given using words (lettering*) and
pictures (images**).
•The picture must be clear in concept (understandable)
and the information must be legible and simple and
straight to the point.
• *lettering also referred to as ‘text’, ‘typeface’ or ‘lettered
information’
• **images are also referred to as pictures or illustrations.

A Poster must have aesthetic correspondence (must be
attractive and pleasing to the eye.
•It must be BOLD in design.
•CLEAR in CONCEPT (both the illustration and the message
must be easily understood.
•ATTRACTIVE in COLOUR and READABLE
•CONVINCING

When designing a Poster three (3) elements
must be taken into consideration:

The lettered information on the poster is usually
given in two forms:
1. the HEADLINE
2. the BODY COPY
•The HEADLINE is the major lettered information
on the poster. It is written larger that the body
copy
•The BODY COPY is the secondary lettered
information on the poster. It is written smaller
than the headline.
•NB the body copy is also called the ‘Tag line’.

using Illustration as the Dominant element
Two approaches:
1. Regular illustration
2. Exaggerated illustration
A REGULAR ILLUSTRATION means that the illustration used takes up about one-third of the design space.
An EXAGGERATED ILLUSTRATION means that a section of the illustration is enlarged or zoomed into and
used to capture the interest of the viewer as well as communicating the message.
In this type of poster the Illustration usually fills the entire background and the information is placed on
top.

using TYPOGRAPHY as
the dominant element
The typography must:
1. Draw attention – colour and size.
2. Be legible (easily read, appropriate
font style chosen).
3. It doesn’t necessarily have to be
horizontal.

using Typography only
Only words are used for this type of poster.
• It is recommended that no more than three different
font styles be used.
• It must be suitable for the occasion and be associated
with the message to be carried out.

There are four general types:
1. Informative poster
2. Advertising Poster
3. Subject Poster
4. Propaganda Poster
19. 1. INFORMATIVE POSTERS
INFORMATIVE POSTERS
•This type of poster informs and educate the viewer.
•It gives the viewer information using a combination
of mostly text and some visuals.
21. 2. ADVERTISING POSTERS
• Are posters created for Promotional purposes.
• They are used to advertise a product or service that is to
be launched or have been recently launched.
• Used to promote things like upcoming movies, theatre
plays, musical concerts and other performances. Fashion
and cosmetic products.
23. 3. SUBJECT POSTERS
SUBJECT POSTERS
•This type of poster creates an awareness of and or
promotes a single subject.
•Used to spread awareness about a specific campaign or
event.
25. 4. PROPAGANDA/POLITICAL POSTERS
• Also called Political Poster.
•This type of poster was used in the 19th Century to
promote an awareness about war.
•Today, they are used by political parties during electoral
campaigns to spread awareness about the party’s policies
and the Candidates running for elections.

• Posters are created in many different sizes.
• The most requested and commonly used sizes are 11” x 17”, 18” x 24”, 24”x 32” and
27” x 40”.
• Other poster sizes are:

• 12” x 18”
• 16” x 20”
• 17” x 22”
• 18” x 24”
• 19” x 27”
• 29” x 30”
