Chris Roush, professor at the University of North Carolina, presents “Uncovering Public Information on Private Companies” during the free Reynolds Center workshop, “Uncovering the Best Local Business Stories,” in Fort Worth. (PLEASE NOTE: This presentation has been modified from the version that was presented in Kentucky.) The daylong workshop covered tips on how to find good stories in the business of government, how to cover economic-development agencies at the state and local levels, and how to find public information on private companies. Presenters also discussed how to find stories in small business and publicly available databases, and how to localize national and international stories for your audience. This free training was specifically geared toward community journalists and generalists on tight budgets and small staffs. A previous workshop by the same name was held in Lexington, Ky. With Signature Assignments that are due on Week 7 all students must turn in their papers at the due date and no late papers will be graded for points, as the term is over, and students and faculty must prepare for the next term. Be sure you include information from the Isaksen and Magretta text books and cite using APA. Citations should be short. The citations from both books must be direct applications from the text. This means that you do not use the textbook to define concepts like (creativity, innovation, creative problem solving) but you use the textbook to apply what you have learned. Remember using the textbooks to define concepts is undergraduate work. Note: This final assignment is worth approximately ⅓ of your grade. Students will begin this final paper by reviewing the comments and suggestions from their instructor from Assignment 2, which was the outline for many issues addressed in this final paper. Project 1: How Would the Philosophers Handle the Situation? (20%) In the first assignment, you have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how to identify different types of ethical dilemmas that occur within business, apply ethical theories to solve dilemmas, and after comparing the results, take a critical stance of determining a theorist who can best address the dilemmas presented in the case scenario. Read the Case Scenario Ang Lee owns and operates a well-respected online tutoring firm, Tutoring University (TU). The firm was started in 1996 by a group of Johns Hopkins University college students who wanted to make extra money to help defray their school costs. Originally, students offered their services to only Hopkins students. Lee sought out the best students in every field at the University and created a team of students that encompassed every major offered by the school. The tutors charged hourly fees. The service proved to be very successful. The student tutors who started with the company were able to pay most of their college expenses by offering tutoring. From the outset TU established a code of conduct for its employees. The code’s underlying principle was that all employees were expected to live up to the traditions of a tutor, namely; Tutors are individuals who provide private instruction, coaching, or mentoring to one student or to a small group of students. The role of the tutor is to help the student to learn, think critically, and problem solve on their own. Tutors take steps to help the student understand that learning is a process that requires acts of reading, listening, comprehending, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Tutors would never agree to do the work for the student. Tutors would never encourage the student to cheat by creating materials that would be presented as the student’s own work or create templates that answered an assessment with little to no work from a student. Upon graduation in 2000, Lee decided to partner with one of the student tutors, Josh Jenkins. Jenkins was a business school graduate. The partners initially expanded the business by setting up tutoring services at other universities across the country. TU became well known and its tutoring services were recommended by the NCAA for teams in the association. The business had $10 million in gross sales by 2004. Riding high on success, and recognizing the growth of online education, Lee and Jenkins decided it was time to expand the business by offering services to students taking online courses. Once the partners established services for students taking online courses, in 2005, the partners once again sought to expand the business by looking into tutoring students for the standard testing programs used by college and university admission boards. Project Purpose: In the first assignment, students are given a scenario about Global Delivery Direct (GDD), a Norfolk, England medium-sized global delivery company that was started in 1968 by four college friends. In this project, students will demonstrate an understanding of the broad role of a leader within an organization. Outcome Met by Completing This Assignment · develop and implement methods for establishing a constructive organizational structure and culture that fosters positive employee and employer relationships · evaluate the culture and policies of an organization to recommend and implement improvements that support its vision, success, and sustainability · assess the interactions between the external environment and the organization to foster responsible and effective leadership and organizational practices In Part One students will explain the executive leader’s role in creating an organizational structure and learn to distinguish the different organizational structures and how decision making plays a role in the organizational structure. Students gain an understanding of the challenges related to organizational structure and organizational culture that a leader faces when merging two companies to create a competitive advantage. In Part Two students have the opportunity to research the merger of two well-known companies with the goal of assessing what happens when two very different organizational cultures are joined as one. Taking what is learned from the merger, students apply concepts and ideas to Global Delivery Direct (GDD). Instructions Step 2: Create a Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) document that is double-spaced, 12-point font. The final product will be between 4-6 pages in length excluding the title page and reference page. Step 3: Review the grading rubric for the assignment. Discussion: What Is News? As you watch a local news program or read a newspaper, you consume the report of recent events created by professional—and sometimes amateur—writers, editors, and reporters. Regardless of their status, these journalists take time to consider the details of a story and how to present it to you, the news consumer. These details can have a powerful effect on how you perceive local, national, and world events. In this Discussion, you will have an opportunity to become a more savvy news consumer by choosing a news story, determining how it was created, and tracking its “newsworthiness” from the day the story “breaks” through several days afterward. To prepare for this Discussion: · Choose a discussion thread based on the topics available this week. · Each thread will present a different topic for a news story. For the topic stated in your chosen thread, you will find a news story that has the necessary elements for it to be considered news and determine whether the news story will persist or fade away. · Review Chapter 13 in the Course Text, The Dynamics of Mass Communication: Media in Transition. · Based on the five elements in the reading, reflect upon what is considered to be “news” and what is not. How does the definition of news change? · Consider the multiple modes of mass communication used to deliver news stories. How do you consume news? How does your choice of mode impact how you view local and world events? For this Discussion, choose one thread from the choices listed this week. Each thread is limited to a maximum number of students based on class size. A thread will close if the limit is reached. If a thread is closed to new posters, select from the open threads. You will post both your initial post and your response post in the same thread. By Day 3 Thread 1: International Relations · Post a 1- to 2-paragraph explanation of why you believe that your chosen international relations news story is or is not considered “news.” Could this news story be the headline or lead story for today’s evening news? What aspects of the story’s message make you believe it would be or wouldn’t be the lead story for the evening news, and why? Refer to 2 specific examples from your course reading or your chosen news story and record in your assignment information about each source, including author, year, page number, and publication title. Thread 2: Economics · Post a 1- to 2-paragraph explanation of why you believe that your chosen economics news story is or is not considered “news.” Could this news story be the headline or lead story for today’s evening news? PROGRESS REPORTS Update the Client, Reader, or Your Instructor Once you have written a successful proposal and have secured the resources to do a project, you are expected to update the client on the progress of that project. This updating is usually handled by progress reports, which can take many forms: memoranda, letters, short reports, formal reports, or presentations. WHAT INFORMATION IS EXPECTED IN A PROGRESS REPORT? Background on the project itself Discussion of achievements since last reporting Discussion of problems that have arisen. Discussion of work that lies ahead Assessment of whether you will meet the objectives in the proposed schedule and budget BACKGROUND ON THE PROJECT In many instances, the client, your Battalion Chief, is responsible for several projects. Therefore he or she will expect you to bring them up to speed as to what you project is. It’s also important to remind them what your objectives are and what the status of the project was at the time of last reporting period DISCUSSION OF ACHIEVEMENTS SINCE LAST REPORTING Outline the progress of the tasks presented in your proposal’s original schedule. DISCUSSION OF PROBLEMS THAT HAVE ARISEN Progress reports are not necessarily for the benefit of only the Chief. Often, you the engineer or firefighter benefit from the reporting because you can share or warn your supervisor about problems that have arisen. In some situations, the Chief might be able to direct you toward possible solutions. In other situations, you might negotiate a revision of the original objectives, as presented in the proposal. DISCUSSION OF WORK THAT LIES AHEAD In this section, you discuss your plan for meeting the objectives of the project. In many ways, this section of a progress report is written in the same manner as the "Plan of Action" section of the proposal, except that now you have a better perspective for the schedule and cost than you did earlier. ASSESSMENT OF WHETHER YOU WILL MEET THE OBJECTIVES IN THE PROPOSED SCHEDULE AND BUDGET In many situations, this section is the bottom line for the supervisor. In some situations, such as the construction of a highway, failure to meet the objectives in the proposed schedule and budget can result in the forfeiting of a contract. In other situations, such as a research project, the boss expects that the objectives will change somewhat during the project. Research Proposal Summary/ Purpose This proposal presents the research that I would like to preform about the topic of (adolescent gang participation and violence). After explaining the background of the issue, I have developed a method and timeline to explore this topic. Areas to be Studied / Background One of the biggest problems facing American cities and families today is when kids get involved with gangs. This is a problem because it damages their future, hurts the community, increases the chances of being thrown in jail, and causes financial issues for .
