Tourism of Udaipur - The City of Lake
1.
2. Introduction
It is often called the "Venice of the East", and is
also nicknamed the "Lake City".Lake
Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Udai Sagar and
Swaroop Sagar in this city are considered some of
the most beautiful lakes in the state. Much of
Udaipur, particularly the old part located on the
shores of Lake Pichola, is where you'll find the
city's most striking landmarks -- the towering City
Palace and Lake Palace -- and it still feels
remarkably like a 16th-century . You can witness
this firsthand by attending the temple at nearby
Eklingji on a Monday evening, when the
Maharana -- the 76th ruler of one of the world's
oldest surviving dynasties -- often joins his
subjects to pay his respects to Shiva. You'll find
the City of Sunrise the most relaxing part of your
sojourn in Rajasthan, in fact so much so that
many end their Indian sojourn with a few days
reflecting in its tranquil waters.
3. Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai
Singh II as the final capital of the erstwhile Mewar
kingdom Legend has it that Maharana Udai Singh
II came upon a hermit while hunting in the foothills
of the Range. The hermit blessed the king and
asked him to build a palace on the spot, assuring
him it would be well protected. Udai Singh II
consequently established a residence on the site. In
1568, the Mughal emprorer Akbar captured the
fort of Chittor, and Udai Singh moved the capital to
the site of his residence, which became the city of
Udaipur.
4. City Palace
It was built by the Maharana Udai Singh
as the capital of the Sisodia Rajput clan .
It is located on the east bank of
the Lake Pichola.
The City Palace is a fusion of the
Rajasthani and Mughal architectural
styles, and was built on a hill top
This palace is also used several times
for making films and other television
broadcasts.
The unique features of this palace are
distinctly homogeneous and eye
catching.
The palace complex has been built
entirely in granite and marble.
The complex provides a fine view of the
lake and the Udaipur city from its upper
terraces
5. Lake palace
Lake Palace is a luxury hotel,
featuring white marble walls, located
on a natural foundation of 4 acres
(16,000 m2) rock on the Jag Niwas
island in Lake Pichola.
It was built under the direction of
the Maharana Jagat Singh II .
it was initially called Jagniwas or Jan
Niwas after its founder .
The upper room of the palace is a
perfect circle. Its floor is inlaid with
black and white marbles, the walls are
ornamented with niches and decorated
with different coloured stones in the
same style as the Taj at Agra.
In order to protect his guests the
Rana destroyed all the town’s boats so
that the rebels could not reach the
island.
6. FATEH SAGAR LAKE
It is said to be the pride of the Udaipur, it is
an artificial lake constructed by Maharana in
north of Lake Pichola . It is one of the four
lakes of the Udaipur city.
It has three small islands. the largest of
these is the island called the Nehru Park ,
the second island houses a public park with
an impressive water-jet fountain and the
third island is the address for the Udaipur
Solar Observatory (USO).
The lake is pear-shaped and is encircled
by the Aravalli hills on three sides.
During summers the water available in this
lake is insufficient to meet the needs of
surrounding areas.
To prevent loss of water due to
evaporation, cetyl alcohol (hexadecanol) is
sprayed over the lake surface.
7. Lake Pichola was created in the year 1362 AD, Named after the nearby
Picholi village.
The lakes around Udaipur were primarily created by building dams to
meet the drinking water and irrigation needs of the city and its
neighborhood.
Two islands, Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir are located within Pichola Lake,
and have been developed with several palaces to provide views of the
lake.
8.
9. Jag Mandir
Jag Mandir is a palace built on an
island in the Lake Pichola.
It is also called the "Lake Garden
Palace“.
Its construction is credited to three
Maharanas .The construction of the
palace was started in 1551 by
Maharana Amar Singh and continued
by other two rulers.
The royal family used the palace as
a summer resort and pleasure palace
for holding parties. The palace
served as a refuge on separate
occasions.
Jag Mandir is situated in one of the
two natural islands in the
lake .
10. Saheliyon-ki-Bari is a major garden and a
popular tourist destination. It has fountains
and kiosks, a lotus pool and marble elephants.
It was built by Maharana Bhopal Singh.
Saheliyon ki Bari means Garden of the
Maidens. There is also a small museum here.
Saheliyon Ki Bari is one the most beautiful
gardens and a major tourist destination in
Udaipur. The garden is famous for its marble
art and fountains.
This renowned garden is located on the
banks of Fateh Sagar Lake. The queen with her
maids and female companions used to come
here for a stroll and spend their time in
leisure.
The superb architecture of the garden
provides a breath-taking view to any
observer. The garden is embellished with
numerous fountains in its four water pools
and marble elephants. It is also celebrated for
its lotus pool and bird-fountains.
11. Udaipur Solar Observatory
The Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) is on an
island in the Fateh Sagar Lake.
The sky conditions at Udaipur are quite
favourable for solar observations. Since the
observatory is situated amidst a large mass of
water, air turbulence which occurs due to ground
heating by sun's rays is decreased.
The observatory was built in 1976 by Dr. Arvind
Bhatnagar following the model of the Solar
Observatory at Big Bear lake in Southern
California. In 1975, Fateh Sagar flooded its
adjoining neighborhoods; In 2003, it was
completely dry, and one could walk to the USO .
USO fills the large longitudinal gap between
Australia and Spain, and provides a link for
continuous solar coverage in international
collaborative programs, including the Global
Oscillations Network Group (GONG).
Since 1981, USO has been managed by the
Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, for
the Department of Space, Government of India.
12. Udaipur has a well-established
education infrastructure.

include IIM Udaipur, Mohan Lal
Sukhadia University, Sir Padampat
Singhania University and Maharana
Pratap University of Agriculture and
