What is OBIEE?
• Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition
(OBIEE) is the newly packaged ad hoc and picture
perfect reporting suite from Oracle based on the
Siebel Analytics tool
• It has three main components
– Data Warehouse Modeler
– Currently Informatica but this will be changing
– BI Answers
– The ad hoc reporting tool
– BI Publisher
– The Picture Perfect reporting tool
• Each of these components are robust and complex in
their own rights and thus we will only cover the BI
Answer tool in this tutorial

• Answers has a full
securities
established for
every user
• Accessing Answers
is via a web page
where the user
logs into the
application using a
username and
password

• Once logged in, the user privileges are
invoked and they see only what is allowed
• If privileged, they can build BI Answer objects
otherwise they may just be directed to their
user’s dashboard (more on these later)

1. Click New Request and • Ad hoc reports
select the desired star begin the same
schema containing the columns as other tools;

come from the

schemas created
in the data
warehousing tool
(for now

separated by “pages” based on the
pivot variable

with 2 columns, Body System is @1@
and the Event Count fact is @2@
• The following slides use these
references to build a narrative report

• Using BI Answers, you can display
dashboards to users upon login
• These users may be decision makers
not writing reports but dissecting the
data to make decisions
• They can view the resulting reports
but not modify nor create new reports
• The following slides show how to
place the AE by Body System table
and narrative report onto a dashboard
for the Administrator user

Compound view and
accumulate all of the
previously created charts,
graphs, tables or narratives
which show as separate
sections

• We will now demonstrate a real
example of how to build an
Answer query, table, pivot table,
chart, and dashboard
• Our demonstration will create a
report of the number of serious
adverse events by reporting
quarter and by body system

Summary

• BI Answers provides a very easy to use
solution for Ad hoc reporting needs
• Coupled with BI Publisher, very complex
reports such as the PSUR or NDA Periodic
could be very easy to produce and
maintain
• Compared to Discoverer, the BI Answer
tool is more user-friendly, requires just as
much end user layer manipulation but is
far superior in the delivery of picture
perfect reports
