Learning Poetry Devices via 2 Technological Artefacts: Pros and Cons Presenter: Bing Ting Chen Due Date: 29 August 2011
Good and Bad technological Artefacts for using in English Classroom
Good Artefact: Prezi
The Pros Prezi is a cloud-based presentation software that allows students to see a new world between whiteboards and slides Its zoomable canvas makes the learning interesting for students as they exploring ideas and the connections between them It interacts with its surroundings, evokes students’ interest and supports students in learning, which helps students build capacity for learning as they are learning more about it and using it for study It is easy to navigate with a providence of simple tools and icons. Within James Sullivan’s Poetry Devices presentation, he addresses the deep knowledge by demonstrating a strong connection among these literary devices with a collection of simple words, images and symbols etc., and this helps students easy comprehend the learning of poetry devices. It benefits for visual and auditory learners in relation to learn this context. They can associate the ideas and concepts with viewing images and listening to videos
The Pros In particular, it provides opportunity for students to connect their learning situation and the real world as they see examples of each device: Background knowledge and Metalanguage (explicit language) are largely used in definitions and examples of the device, which gives a clear detailed of the device, and helps students understand and recall their previous knowledge in relation to this device Following that, substantive communication (oral, written and artistic forms) such as the visual elements, are largely used to support examples of the device. This helps students understand by communicating ideas through images and videos. Such as the slide on the right hand side, the idea of Onomatopoeia is illustrated through concise information, and authentic and relevant visual elements. Students enable to extend their knowledge and connect their learning to the real situation as they are having a good understanding of this device (Connectedness) Throughout the class, the teacher can activate class and engage students in learning, at the same time, the teacher can check students' understanding, by asking them to apply the knowledge in any alive, relevant situations that surrounding their life (Engagement and Connectedness)
More Pros After the learning of all the devices, students are expected to write their ‘personal poems’ as to demonstrate their understanding of the learning, also they are given options to create their own piece of work (High expectations) This in-class assessment is another way checking students’ comprehension of the learning, it also benefits kinesthetic learners to write down whatever they have gained from the class Teacher can also guide students to integrate their learning by creating their own poetry devices presentations as to demonstrate and build their understanding of all the devices
Ongoing Learning with Prezi As soon as students are having a deep knowledge and understanding of the devices, they will be encourage to learn and explore more about Prezi Students can have public access of this Prezi site with a storage up to 100 MB of data, they can download finished prezis and present offline . Thus they are feeling free to use this artefact whenever and whatever they like They can also create their own prezis from any computer online, as well as sharing their ideas and stories with other students and learners They can also make use of the Prezi site to convey and identify other prezi presentations that support their own learning Every time when they create and review their ideas within a prezi presentation, they can see a series of relations between each idea, and this will allow them to build a strong relationship of knowledge
The Cons All students’ prezis will be published on prezi.com/explore A small Prezi watermark will be shown on students’ prezis Students can only create prezis online Not enough commenting and feedback received for most creators, so it is hard to identify any mistakes and see any improvements
Bad Artefact: Bubbl.us What is ‘Bubbl.us’? Bubbl.us is a mindmapping website that enables students to brainstorm their ideas online, creates colourful mindmaps to print or share with others.
The Cons The teacher has to provide a explicit background knowledge and give a good understanding of poetry devices to students before introducing this artefact to them Throughout the class, the teacher has to guide students and provide a series of supports such as substantive communication and social support for all students There are no clear instructions provided except a blank page of tools and symbols that guides students how to use this tool Students do not engage the learning of poetry device with this artefact due to lack of features and tools The learning is not interactive, it is only one way learning where students create and brainstorm their ideas individually It is difficult for students to connect the learning with their previous knowledge and relates or applies the learning to the real situation It only benefits for kinesthetic learners when they come to physically brainstorm their ideas
The Pros ,[object Object]
It provides privacy for students, which helps collect personal information once they create their own account, password and email address. It also collects students’ own work and keep the work safely
Students can always have a access of print button to print of whatever work that they have done within the class ,[object Object]
