1. DEPLOYMENT OF AN INVENTORY TOOL FOR
NETWORK AND SERVER ASSETS
CASE: ORANGE CAMEROUN
Done by: Talla Bill Morrisson
Under the supervision of: Mr. Leonnel Kwedeu and Mr. Emile Chuenmogne
3. INTRODUCTION
The structure of IP networks increase rapidly with the particular needs of an organization
With the changes in hardware and configurations on these networks, having an up-to-date
inventory of all these equipments can be a nearly impossible task depending on the volume of
the networks, when using a tool like Excel. Due to this kind of problems this project was assigned
such that a tool can be administered to automatically inventory network and server assets and
update information about those assets when modifications are done on the network
INTRODUCTION METHODOLOGY DEMORESULTS CONCLUSION
4. METHODOLOGY
These were the elaborated steps for the project to be accomplished
Search of different inventory applications, test and elaborate their characteristics
Choose a tool that meets the needs of the organization
Test and deploy the tool on the network
These are the criteria taken into account for the choice of the application:
Type of database
Compatibility with operating systems that are in line with organization's policies
Web interface
Remote administration of assets
Tracking of hardware and software warranty status
INTRODUCTION METHODOLOGY DEMORESULTS CONCLUSION
5. METHODOLOGY
These are the applications found that could perform more or less the awaited tasks:
SpiceWorks
Lansweeper
OpenAudit
OIDVIEW SNMP MIB browser
Netdisco
RANCID

7. RESULTS
When comparing the different applications the following points were brought up:
Spiceworks can't detect any device without having the credentials of devices that a user will not
even want to scan
Spiceworks et Lansweeper can't do remote administration of assets.
RANCID can only detect equipmenta of specific brands and is only used with the command line.
OIDVIEW SNMP browser lacks a lot of functionalities for the tasks needed.
Netdisco has nearly all the characteristics needed for tasks at hand but has a postgresql database
which is not in line with the policies of softwares used in Orange Cameroun.
INTRODUCTION METHODOLOGY DEMORESULTS CONCLUSION
8. RESULTS
My choice was laid on Open-Audit because in spite of having all functionalities required it can
track the hardware and software warranty status of a device and it is in line with the software
policies of Orange Cameroun.
It gives the choice on the type of equipments the user want to scan and inventory.
The documentation on the software is concise and clear.
It has a large community that can assist users in the troubleshooting and deployment of the
application.
