2. 2town hall report / june 2016
Our church is an awesome church. At root it is because our God is
an awesome God, but it is also because we are trying to be authentic,
vulnerable, loving, grace-filled, and passionate about the mission of
Jesus in our world. As we say so often, we are not a perfect church –
but by the grace of God we are committed to keep growing and
learning and serving and loving!
Just read these annual reports from our various ministries! In these
reports I counted over 75 names of people serving on various
ministry core teams (and I know not all the names were included)!
And then there are scores more front line volunteers in our ministries!
Praise God – because I suspect very few churches have our level of
leadership participation!
When you read the financial reports below, praise God for the generosity
of our congregation, and let’s all continue to grow in generosity!
When you read the Vitality Team and Strategic Planning Team reports,
praise God for the dedicated work that has been done and continues to
be done to discern God’s future directions for Cornerstone, and let’s
keep praying for us all to be more and more alert to God’s guidance.
In fact, when you read each of the following ministry reports, pause for a
moment after each one and praise God for what he is doing in us among
us and through us at Cornerstone!
I can only image what God has still in store for Cornerstone Church.
May we more and more boldly follow Jesus wherever he leads us.
May we more and more lavish grace upon each other as we share our
lives together.
And may we more and more take the love of Jesus to our world.
In Him,
Pastor Bill

The Vitality Team was tasked with leading Cornerstone through the
Vitality Pathway that our denomination created for churches to discern
their vision and mission. Paul Ahn, Allison Park, Dana Yoo and Pastor Bill
attendedourdenominationaltrainingtoleadourchurchalongtheVitalityPathway.
After Cornerstone participated in the Veritas Workshop led by denominational
leader Kreig Gammelgard, the formal Vitality Team was recruited and they in
turn led the church through the remaining steps of the Vitality Pathway (the
EPIC workshop, the Pulse questionnaire, and the One workshop). Along the
way they worked through sub-committees to complete the eight functions of
the Vitality Team (represented above in the list of the team members). We
sincerely thank these leaders and their teams for their dedication to do the
thorough background work needed before the Strategic Planning Team could
take over to lead the church visioning process to its completion. The links
below will connect you to the Vitality Team Final Report and to the results
of the Pulse Survey that assesses how churches see themselves in the “Ten
Markers of Healthy Missional Churches”. (In the following report here you
will read how the Strategic Planning Team has carried on the next step of the

Coming out of the Vitality
process, the Strategic Planning
team is a task force that has been
put together to carry the next phase
of the Vitality process.
__Our vision for this ministry
is to be able to come out of the
visioning process in the summer of
2016 with a clearly defined mission,
vision, and strategy for Cornerstone
Church. We hope to set clear and
aspirational goals for the next
3-5 years that set us up to make
intentional choices and be thoughtful
about how we grow and mature as
a church.
__So far in the process we have
drafted new mission and vision
statements for Cornerstone
and reviewed these with staff
and the Leadership Team.
The next steps in the process
includes refining these statements
based on the feedback we’ve
received, and then to use them
to develop measurable goals and
strategic initiatives for our church.
__We have been especially encouraged
by the level of buy-in and input we’ve
received from multiple groups of
people. Many of you have played a
pivotal role early on in the process
through various Vitality interviews and
surveys, all of which served as critical
inputasweenteredthestrategicplanning
phase. That along with the discussions
we’ve had with staff and LT lead us to
believe we have a fairly comprehensive
set of feedback. Yet even with all the
diverse perspectives, we feel God is
narrowing us in on what His
vision for Cornerstone is. It has
been VERY encouraging to see it all
coming together!
__Please pray that we would continue
to listen to where God may be leading
us and that more than eloquent words
or catchy phrases, that we would be
used by God to clearly articulate His
vision for Cornerstone.

With the help of the Leadership Team and the Pastoral Staff, we held an
All-Church Retreat for the first time in many years! Almost 100 folks
across all of our life-stage ministries joined us at Pilgrim Pines Conference
Center to live out what it means that we are “better together” as a spiritual family.
Highlights included impromptu skits, group games, small group discussions, and
testimonies of God’s work in the lives of some of our college students, young
adults, and parents.
__A sub-ministry under the Community Life Ministry is the Welcoming Ministry,
which has a Core Team comprised of Eunjee Yoon, Becky Oh, and Eugina Lim.
Since last May, the Welcoming Ministry has been utilizing Cornerstone Connect to
serve approximately 120 newcomers who have inquired about getting connected
to a small group, meeting a pastor, and asking other questions about Cornerstone.
Looking ahead at the upcoming ministry year, the Community Life Ministry will
be hosting more all-church gatherings (e.g. picnics, meals after service, etc.) to
allow for more opportunities of Christ-honoring fellowship in the truest sense!
__Please pray for the Welcoming Ministry as it evaluates and brainstorms
new and more effective ways of loving on those who are new to Cornerstone
and/or Boston. Through some concrete changes, the Welcoming Ministry is
seeking ways to be more intentional about expressing tangible love on those who
may not feel comfortable or plugged in at our church. The Welcoming Ministry
also longs for the spirit of hospitality to spread beyond its ministry volunteers
and into the hearts of every member and attendee at Cornerstone!

• Our two Cornerstone Missionary Families ($6,000):
– Dave and Carolyn live in a closed country in the Far East
where they are developing relationships as they teach
English and entrepreneur classes and where Dave meets with
indigenous pastors working towards planting churches in
two nearby ethnic towns. For security purposes for their
family, we are unable to publicly post more details. If you

– Benny and Janice Yu serve victims of human sex trafficking
in Mexico City through a non-profit organization called
El Pozo de Vida (The Well of Life). They recently have been
working on brokering an accord between Human Rights of
Mexico and of Brazil for a joint campaign against human
trafficking at the upcoming Olympics in Rio. If you would

to minister to them, to rescue them, and train them vocationally.
• And finally, we used our short-term missions budget ($1,200) to
support some of our 14 Cornerstone students who will be
participating in missions trips during the upcoming summer.

This summer we have two Habitat for Humanity trips planned. One
is a multi-day trip to Bridgeport, CT where Cornerstone sent a
weeklong trip last year. The other is a day trip to the Boston location.
We are also going to be offering the Lazarus at the Gate economic
discipleship course over the summer as an offering for summer
community groups. Lazarus at the Gate has been a critical part of our
church discipleship programming as it’s been a major vehicle used to
impart God honoring stewardship principles and techniques into the
everyday lives of those who participate in the class. We are excited to
continue to offer the class this summer.
__Through the life stage ministry efforts, February was dedicated as
a CMJ month for the college ministry. Our Friday Night Fellowship in
February was themed around God’s love for the needy and the Christian’s
responsibility. We also were able to send out two volunteer teams to serve
on a Saturday afternoon. One team of students went to the New England
Seafarers Mission and another team went to serve at one of the Pine
Street Inn homes. The college ministry staff group led both teams.

This year was the first year since 2011 that Cornerstone
did not officially have a Compassion Mercy & Justice (CMJ)

biblical truths about our call to be doers of CMJ and also to provide
opportunities to do acts of CMJ. Instead the plan was to run
CMJ events through life stage ministries as the vehicles to
provide opportunity.

The Leadership Development Team has
two central goals: (1) equip existing
leaders at Cornerstone so that they can serve more
effectively; and (2) identify and nurture
future leaders who can shape the next generation
of Cornerstone.
__On August 23, 2015, we hosted our first leaders’
gathering for both current leaders and those
interested in serving in the future. We had 45
participants whose ministry involvement widely
spanned from Children’s to Prayer to Vitality to
College Core. We shared a meal while getting to
know one another and spent time brainstorming
together in how leaders can be better equipped
and how ministries can be better served through
them. Note: 10 attendees were not serving on any
ministry at the time, so we separately encouraged
them to seek out ministries in which they would be
excited and called to serve.
__Last summer, 8 of our church leaders attended

the Willowcreek Leadership Summit simulcast at
Grace Church in Lexington. This summer we hope
to send even leaders to this world class leadership
development event.
__We plan to do another leadership development
workshop in June when the Strategic Planning
Team lays out Cornerstone’s finalized vision and
mission statements from which will fall out
directions for new and existing ministries. We are
intentionally coinciding with this development
because new directions will inevitably call for new
and effective leaders. For the summer workshop,
we principally intend to identify – both current and
potential – leaders’ spiritual gifts and brainstorm
(in small teams of mixed spiritual gifts) goals and
steps for various ministries. In addition, we plan
to host a session with current leaders where we
will develop our leadership skills by watching and
discussing around a recorded session from Willow
Creek’s Global Leadership Summit.

The Christian Formation Ministry is tasked with envisioning, developing,
and leading an intentional disciple making pathway for Cornerstone
Church. The Core Team formed this year has been meeting to work through a
Ministry Strategy process to determine our vision, values, strategies, and
plans. As we move forward we want to identify the current effective
components of Cornerstone’s disciple making process and work to make them
even more effective (retreats, small groups, classes and seminars, etc.) and
we want to identify new components that will dependably make Christ-like
disciples in the future. Aligning with the progress of the Strategic Planning
Team, this next year we hope to share with the congregation a comprehensive
discipleship pathway. Our dream is that Cornerstone would become known
for its impact in the world that is a direct consequence of effectively making
disciples who look like Jesus.

The Prayer Team is a team of trained and
equipped prayer ministers who pray for the
church on Sunday mornings and pray with in-
dividuals after the Sunday service. In the past
2015-2016 year, we’ve held trainings covering
different kinds of prayer: listening prayer, prayer
for forgiveness, prayer for physical healing, and
prayer for spiritual deliverance.
__Over this past year, we have been developing a
Sozo ministry team. The goal of Sozo ministry is
to help the individual experience greater wholeness
in their relationship with God the Father, Jesus, and
Holy Spirit. This specialized team of prayer ministers
is trained and equipped to pray for emotional and
spiritual healing at a greater depth than can
benormally offered through the Sunday Prayer Team.
__As part of our team training over this past year,
our team has completed 12 practicum sozo sessions
with various individuals by appointment. We are in
the process of scheduling approximately 2-3 more
sessions in the coming months. So far, we have
received overwhelmingly positive feedback from
our practicum sozo sessions. 9 of the 12 said they
would highly recommend the sozo experience to
others. Some reported that they were encouraged
and felt like they received a lot of healing through
the sozo session. Others said that the sozo allowed
them to forgive others and connect with God in a
way they hadn’t before.
__Prayer Parties have been a huge blessing.
A “prayer party” is an informal time of prayer to
intercede for the world, Boston, and Cornerstone.
Prayer minisTry (Priscilla cheung)
The Prayer Ministry Core Team includes Priscilla Cheung, Helen Li with Pastor Bill. The Prayer Ministry
serves Cornerstone by helping to grow a culture of prayer in the life of our church. We hope to see
prayer become a natural and exciting aspect of the Cornerstone community. The Prayer Ministry also
seeks to help our church experience greater spiritual healing and freedom so that we could experience
more of the fullness of life that Jesus offers us.
It’s a time to pray for your friends, family, and for
yourself. The Prayer Party team is led by Dana Lee,
Anna Chung, and Alex Kim. Each month about
15-20 people gather to pray for the world, Boston,
Cornerstone community, and for ourselves. There
is no strict agenda and the meetings start by
asking God how should we pray. We listen and then
intercede. On certain months we pray for specific
people and for specific requests. We try to share
praise reports when we can and most people have
said they really appreciate the time and space to
pray with others.
Prayer Ministry prayer requests:
Pray for God to raise up more leaders on the
Prayer Ministry as this ministry expands and
ministry responsibilities continue to grow.
Pray for a greater hunger at Cornerstone
Church to experience and encounter God
through prayer.
Pray for people with a passion or gift
for prayer to boldly step up and serve in
this ministry.

16. 15town hall report / june 2016
Ever since Cornerstone was planted over 10 years ago, we’ve been blessed to have generations of
volunteers serve on the Worship Ministry and lead our church services in singing songs of praise to
the Lord. This year we had our largest number of volunteers ever! We were able to organize three
separate praise bands each with all the musicians needed along with a visual and sound technician.
This surplus of volunteers allowed our teams to rotate Sundays, which I believe was very healthy
for the volunteers themselves as well as the church. Musicians were able to get more rest weeks than
in years past and the church was able to be the recipient of three different personalities, styles, and
flavors of worship music.
__While the felt experience of the church was probably almost identical, behind the scenes the
worship ministry has been in phases of transition to fulfill the 5-year vision of the worship
ministry’s primary function at Cornerstone to be “leaders and culture makers of lifestyles of 24/7
worship.” Phase one was put into action in September 2015 through the vehicle of family groups (FGs).
The language of “praise band” was replaced with “family group” because now FGs were not only
responsible for preparing the music for Sunday’s but were tasked with the responsibility of sharing
life together in a more holistic worshipful lifestyle. Led by our three worship core team leaders, Family
Groups gathered throughout the year for the purposes of worship not just making music.
__Our hope is that in five years that when an average Cornerstone attendee hears “worship
ministry” that their mind does not default to thinking of “musicians for Sunday morning,” but
rather “leaders and initiators of lifestyles of worship.” This coming September will be year two of
the process and we are excited to take further steps to make this vision become a reality through the
Lord’s power and the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

This has been a great year of ministry
development for the Children’s Ministry.
Our core team has been dedicated to lead our
ministry with greater impact and effectiveness.
We have also been encouraged this year with the
plethora of volunteers. Since spring of 2015 until
today, we have not had a shortage ofvolunteers.
We have actively recruited and our volunteers
have told others about our ministry so people
have approached us even when we weren’t
recruiting, to the point that we delayed new
volunteer start dates. This is a new phenomenon
in the Children’s Ministry and has been amazing.
Our needs have grown so much and the number
of volunteers needed has been even greater, yet
God has provided an abundance.
__We have given our phenomenal volunteers
more responsibility within the Children’s

The Leadership Team has had a very Spirit-led year in overseeing the church and
growing as a team. Much of what the Leadership Team has done is encompassed by the
various other sub-committees within Leadership Team (nominating, finance, membership,
etc.). Aside from this, the Leadership Team is always monitoring the health of our
congregation, identifying issues, praying for congregants, planning for the future, supporting
staff, and making sure the church is operationally sound. Some tangible examples from the
past year include meeting with the Strategic Planning Team, discussing pastoral compensation,
presiding over Sunday service, and identifying potential burnout in volunteers.
__The Executive Team as a sub-part of the Leadership Team is currently in the process
of collecting and conducting performance reviews for our three pastors. This will serve as
a way to both encourage and grow our staff in leading and equipping our church. Other
executive team functions are more administrative such as signing off on financial items and
reimbursements. As chairperson, Ernie also serves as Pastor Bill’s first point of contact for
any larger concerns before they are brought before the whole leadership team. Pastoral care
also fell under exec responsibilities this year but there is not much to report here. We’d like
to revive this ministry for next year.

certainly is) business, there has been a certain peace to our decision making that we feel can
only come from God. Though there is much for us to continue to learn and mature in, we
have been striving hard to seek God’s counsel in our oversight of our church. In addition to
this, we have been reading through Peter Scazzero’s book The Emotionally Healthy Leader
(the leadership analog to “Emotionally Healthy Spirituality” which the church went through
last year), which has been an incredible unbelievable resource in growing our team to not
just be doers but healthy disciples of God first. Some direct results of this have been a more
focused effort on working within our limits, caring for each other as a team, and making sure
meetings are not just a checklist, but informed by the Spirit as well.
__We truly praise God that the past year on Leadership Team has been very smooth. There
have been difficult decisions, but we’ve worked through them well together. We ask that you
pray with us that we continue to grow in our personal relationships with God and each other
as we feel this is the strongest way to grow better leaders.

Since the Bible takes spiritual leadership
selection very seriously, the Nominating
Committee sees leadership seletion at Cornerstone
as a process of spiritual discernment. We prayerfully
and very intentionally meet with each candidate
to discern issues of character, competency,
chemistry and capacity. In January we began to
solicit nominations for the Leadership Team from
the congregation, existing Leadership Team, and
Staff and in March-May we interviewed a number
of candidates to prayerfully discern if serving on
the Leadership Team would be good for them and
for the church at this point in their lives. We are
happy to present the following four candidates to
serve on the Cornerstone Leadership Team for the
upcoming term (August 2016 to July 2017) and
up to three more consecutive terms thereafter,
per our Constitution and Bylaws: Jason Kim,
nominaTing CommiTTee (adam miller)
The Nominating Committee Core Team members are Adam Miller (Chair and Leadership Team
representative), Pastor Bill (as Lead Pastor), and our two at large members, Helen Li and C.S. Lee
Jennifer Chung (who works at MIT), Priscilla
Cheung, and Nadesha Ahn. Church members
will vote on these nominees during our June 5th
Congregational Meeting.
The Nominating Committee would also like
to say thank you to the two Leadership Team
members whose terms end on July 31, 2016. C.S.
and David Yuh have been valuable members of the
Leadership Team contributing their insights to
scores of decisions over the last few years. While
each of them have served in a number of capacities,
this last year C.S. led the Membership Ministry and
David has served as the secretary of the
Leadership Team. While they have earned a break,
their presence will be missed and we pray for
God’s great blessings upon both of them and their
families. Thank you for your hearts of service to
Christ and to his church!

As another ministry year nears the end, I reflect and think
how blessed Cornerstone Church is to partner with God in
doing the work He calls us to in and around Boston. We do this by
coming together as a community of believers to worship, praise,
learn, share and connect with God and one another. We are also
called to live out our lives to shine forth the light of Jesus that
will draw others to Him. I remember stories people shared during
their membership interviews, getting a glimpse of how living a
life in Jesus has transformed and are shaping their lives. This is
why we belong to a community of believers so we can do life
together in Christ and for His namesake. I thank each member who
made a public declaration of a commitment to belong as a formal
member, acknowledging how we can partner with God and one
another to do this together.
__We currently have 55 formal members. We added around 10
people past year and continue to encourage membership. We have
many people who are already serving in a significant way and I
like to implore them to take the next step in the process. For next
ministry year, I would like us to reach 100 registered members
and would love for people join Membership Committee to work
together toward that goal. Please reach out to anyone on the
Leadership Team or any of the pastors if you are interested in
joining the Membership Committee. Thank you all for being a part
of this community of God and I look forward to serving Him
together with all of you for another year!

The Finance Ministry is responsible for the maintenance, planning,
and analytics behind the church budget. We do our best to
understand how budget is being spent throughout the year, analyze
where we might have opportunities to spend or save, project revenue,
nurture generosity, and responsibly plan for future years. Given the
interwoven nature of this ministry, we work very closely with various
ministry leaders, as well as staff and the rest of the Leadership Team
to ensure that the budget is working directly to impact God’s kingdom
and bless his family within and outside our doors. For more information,
check out the 2016-2017 Budget Proposal.

Budget Aggressively with Faith
• Plan for the future of Cornerstone based on faith,

church savings / reserves as needed (~$80K)
