This is my slide presentation that I use when workshopping institutes on implementing blended learning.
It is based on what I call my 4x4x4 system: 4 Phases, 4 Pillars and 4 Stages of learning.
3. Blended Learning is a combination of onsite
and online teaching in such a way that it creates
a learning experience that is better than either.

5. Good to Great
1. Have you ever done an online course? What did you like/dislike about it?
2. What are your biggest challenges as a teacher? Given unlimited resources, in
what ways do you think you can overcome these challenges?
3. Again, given unlimited resources, how would you improve your lessons so that
they become more engaging, effective and enjoyable for you and your learners,
with or without technology?
Desired Outcomes:
The desired outcomes of this session are:
• To identify the pros and cons aspects of online learning.
• To reflect on current challenges and “pain points” and begin the thought
process towards exploring viable solutions.

10. Purpose
• Why we are doing this?
• What is the objective?
• What are the desired outcomes?

• Hyper-stimulated
• Mobile
• Personalized

12. Wearing their Shoes
In this session, you will play the role of the learner.
In your groups, discuss a day in the life of a typical learner on a school day and on a
weekend/ holiday.
For the success of this task, please pay particular attention to the details as far as
technology goes and drill down to the minute details. For example, do not simply say
“he spends time playing video games” or “she spends time on Instagram.” State
exactly what they are doing, what games they are playing, who they are playing with
if it’s a multiplayer game, what they are posting and to whom, and if they a chatting,
then to whom and about what, to the best of your understanding.
Desired Outcomes:
The desired outcomes of this session are:
• To get a clearer understanding of the lifestyle of your learners and what
makes them “tick”
• To get an appreciation for their preferences
• To gain insights about their challenges
• To acquire a level of empathy

13. Learner Challenges
Learning is…
• Unengaging
• Not interactive
• Impersonal
• Inflexible
• Not Self-paced
• Not social
• Lacking in timely feedback
BilalKathrada
15. 1.More interactions with learners
2.Less teaching, more learner support
3.Higher learner retention
4.Better pass rates
5.Caters for variety of learning styles
6.Caters for short attention spans
7.Progress tracking and diagnostics
8.Access to global resources
9.Develop once, use repeatedly
10.Less stress, increased satisfaction

17. People
• Who are the key role-players?
• How do we motivate them to come aboard?
• What information and training will they need to
be effective?
• What communication channels will we use?
• How do we ensure regular feedback?
BilalKathrada
21. Platform
• What infrastructure do we have?
• Do we have sufficient laptops/tablets?
• Do our learners or their parents have
cellphones?
• Do we have ample internet speeds?
• Do we have a good wi-fi infrastructure?
• Is there a learning management system in
place?
• Is there a budget to upgrade?
BilalKathrada
23. Pedagogy
• What teaching methodologies will we use?
• Where will we get content from?
• Curate or Create?
• Paid or Open Source?
• Is there a budget?

Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with NO functional change
Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement
AUGMENTATION
MODIFICATION
REDFINITION
Technology allows for significant task redesign
Allows for creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable
Example: Notes in PDF format
Example: Adding multimedia like videos and audio
Example: Students use tech like PowerPoint to create artifacts
Example: Exploring a country with Google Earth

26. Destination: The Future
In this session we will establish the first pillar: establishing a purpose. We will do this
by identifying 3 things:
1. The current status: where we are right now
2. The motivator: why do we need to change? What are the problems we need to
solve?
3. The ideal state: where do we want to be in 3 to 5 years.
Desired Outcomes:
The desired outcome of this session is:
• To establish a vision for a Blended Learning rollout by identifying the status
quo and the current challenges that need to be solved.

INITIATION
Technology: Cellphones
Technology: Laptop and projector
EXPLORATION
ACCELERATION
TRANSFORMATION
Technology: Tablet PC’s, High-speed internet, LMS
Technology: eBooks, educational, and note-taking apps
Example: Using IM groups as discussion forums and for resource-sharing
Example: Teaching using PowerPoint slides and video.
Example: Self-learning in class using curated content on an LMS
Example: Learning is entirely digital, no books
The 4 Phases are characterized by the technology available

29. Action Plan
This is probably the most important session. It is where the rubber hits the road,
where we put an actionable plan into place.
The objective of this session is to fill in the table in the next slide.
For each of the four phases, each teacher needs to determine the following:
• Start date
• End date
• Pillars: answer the questions and identify the key components for that particular
phase and how you will bring them together
• SAMR: Using the tech available, which level of SAMR are you aiming to reach?
Desired Outcomes:
The desired outcome of this session is a strategic, actionable rollout plan.
