This is Mr Dogterom. He is 92 years old and is one of our finest examples in terms of using data to accelerate the energy transition. Look at his smile, he is a happy customer!
So why is he so happy? With his Crowdnett service, he uses his Tesla Powerwall to use more renewable energy by helping to balance the grid. How this works took me almost 10 years so let me try to explain this to you:
Eneco Group is a group of companies that is internationally active in the energy sector. We are the largest independent energy company in the Netherlands. We serve around 2 million customers. We have been pursuing our steadfast sustainable strategy since 2007. We invest in wind farms, biomass plants and solar farms in order to increase the supply of sustainable energy. And we develop innovative products and services so that consumers and companies have full control over how they generate, store, use or share their sustainable energy. Eneco Group’s head office is in Rotterdam. Next to the Netherlands, we are also active in Belgium, UK, France and Germany.
This quote is an example of the uberification that threats to disrupt any industry at the moment. We see already with new companies like the combination of Tesla and SolarCity, that this could well become true. We try to stay ahead of the curve.
The energy transition is all about the shift from a centrally organised fossil energy system to a system in which people organise sustainable energy by themselves or together with others. At street and neighbourhood level – for example, with the neighbours or business areas.
The energy transition is not just about technology, it’s also about people and the choices they make when they use that technology. It means that we will focus even more on developing products and services that consumers and companies can use to generate, store, use and share their own energy. We see it as our role to fulfil a connecting function.
Charging your battery of your phone
How do you become relevant as an energy company not only 1ce a year but several times per day?
5 star service is what matters to us..
So you understand the moving energy world around us but what does our customer want? Probably you think about energy once a year, when your “eindafrekening” If we want accelerate our customer into their energy transition, we also have to understand

Shake up the existing business lines with data,
We are working on ‘Toon KetelWacht’, an functionality which tells you when maintenance is needed for your boiler.
As a concrete example, Toon already offers solar production insight on its display. However, customers do not just want graphs, they have certain customer needs: Do my solar panels work properly? Is it still going according to the business case promised by the installer? How am I doing vs others? How self-sufficient am I? With a data science model which compares actual production with solar irradiation data from satellites, we can detect faults, and can tell customers how their panels are performing vs expectations. We have tested this as a separate app with over 300 customers, indicating enthusiasm and a willingness to pay extra for this. Next step is to scale it up.
Next to this platform, we are building a service portfolio on top of this. As an example, we are launching the Eneco Heatwinner soon, and already, around 100 units have been installed. The idea is that in order to make heating more sustainable, we have to transition from gas fired boilers to electric heating. But heatpumps are very difficult in the retrofit market. Our solution, together with our partner Inventum, is to build a hybrid heatpump that takes over the base load of the gas-fired boiler, saving up to 60% of gas usage for heating. It is easily installed, and pays back in short time. It can be remotely monitored through the IoT technology of our Toon platform, and comes with a service contract, so subscription based. Adoption will be driven by subsidy initially. We’re already looking to internationalize, so if you’re interested, let us know
We are very proud that we have a live smart charging service. Based on consumer preferences, cloud-based algorithm will determine optimal charging based on wholesale price forecast feeds. Since Netherlands has a large fleet of EV owners already, we believe we are well ahead on this subject vs other countries.
This is a Dutch service which is build together with Eneco. We are looking for utility partners abroad to expand.

Privacy requirements – Core principles
The user is in control on how his data is processed and for what purpose.
The processing of Toon data is 100% transparent; the user is fully aware of all data that is processed.
We nor any other Toon ecosystem partner will sell personal data to a third party without users’ consent.
We have categorized our privacy principles on the basis of the OECD principles, which are the basic principles embodied in all European Union Privacy Laws and in the upcoming EU Privacy regulation.
Specific Toon privacy principles
A. Collection limitation principles
Toon personal data and data inferred from Toon personal data may generate new insights that can form a basis for new products or services or can serve general public purposes. As such insights may have a privacy impact, all data research will in principle only be conducted on the basis of anonymous Toon personal data. The use of anonymous Toon personal data for research purposes will be made explicit in the applicable privacy statement and users can elect to opt-out of this use. To the extent that personal data is required for research purposes, the use there of will always be subject to users’ consent.
We and all Toon ecosystem partners shall implement the technical and organisational measures that are appropriate to the processing of Toon personal data and its purposes to ensure that that the Toon, the Toon platform, Toon services and connected devices, meet the requirements of applicable privacy legislation.

Users may be enabled to issue on their initiative a request for an offer from selected vendors for the delivery of products and services that relate to Toon, e.g. request a selected vendor to issue an offer for the isolation of the home of the user.
C. Data quality principles
Toon personal data shall be relevant and proportional for the purposes for which it is processed. If and to the extent this is required by the relevant purpose Toon personal data shall be correct and complete and will be updated on a regular basis.
The quality requirements for Toon personal data are dependent on the nature of the Toon service for which they are processed. If the impact of a faulty service for the personal or financial situation of the user is high this is combined with a high quality requirement and vice versa. The required minimum level of quality shall be assured by the application of a data quality management process.
D. Purpose specification principles
Toon personal data shall only be processed for specific and explicit purposes that have been communicated to the user by means of a privacy statement.
We and each Toon ecosystem partner will stay away from the so called “creepy line”. Even if a specific processing of Toon personal data is covered by a purpose, we or the Toon ecosystem partner will continuously verify whether the intended processing may potentially surprise, scare or anger the user.
A Toon Friendly User Group or “FUG” will be set up. The Toon personal data related to participants of this FUG may be used for broader purposes than Toon personal data related to the regular Toon user group provided that each FUG participant has provided adequate consent to use of his/her Toon personal data for such broader purposes.
If Toon personal data is processed for a secondary purpose that is compatible with the original purpose for which it has been collected, such processing shall also directly benefit the user (e.g. by means of a discount or the introduction of a new service that provides for direct benefits to the user) or alternatively we or the Toon ecosystem partner involved in such processing, shall not directly commercially benefit from such processing (e.g. by serving a public interest).
E. Openness principles
All communication related to the processing of Toon personal data shall be clear and easy to understand.
The Toon and Toon services shall use a layered privacy statement. This layered privacy statement is composed of a basic Toon privacy statement combined with additional privacy statements that apply when the user opts for additional Toon services. For each Toon service, the additional privacy statement shall clearly communicate which categories of Toon personal data shall be processed to deliver such service to the user.
F. Individual participation principles
The standard out of the box user consent settings on the Toon can be changed only by the user on the Toon, Toon App or website directly or by agreement between the user and the relevant Toon ecosystem partner. Each agreement shall be documented and auditable.
The Toon shall act as a “data concierge” for the user. On the Toon a user can at all times check his/her Toon personal data (on a category level) and related consent settings. Upon request a user is entitled to receive a detailed overview of all specific elements of Toon personal data that have been processed over a specific period.
To the extent that Toon personal data is stored centrally on the platform this shall be stored in a personal cloud solution or PDS set up in such a way that it enables the user to be fully in control of his/her Toon personal data and grant access to it to us and Toon ecosystem partners in a secure manner.
The collection of Toon personal data by connected devices (e.g. Philips Hue) shall be fully transparent to the user and subject to a prior consent of the user.
G. Accountability principle
- Toon shall actively monitor privacy compliance in relation to the Toon, the Toon platform and Toon services, and shall draw up an annual report on the outcome of such monitoring. The report shall be made available to Toon’s wholesale partners.
- Every Toon ecosystem partner is fully accountable for resolving any problems that may occur with the processing of Toon personal data that is related to users that are a customer of the partner.
- We will actively police App developers on their privacy compliance and will hold them accountable if and when this is required. In case of privacy violations by an App developer we may disable the access of the relevant App to the Toon API.
H. Security safeguard principles
Toon will not store data elements on the Toon that can potentially identify an individual person or a specific home.
The Toon and the Toon platform shall be secured in accordance with the highest industry security standards.
But what about data?
At the heart of everything is the granular data from the P1 dongle in the Netherlands, or CAD or Sensor device in other regions.
In addition to behavioural and lifestyle Insights, at this granularity you can gain much more Insights at the appliance level, focusing on the higher load appliances which will make the most difference to a homeowners energy consumption.
I will pull out a couple of Insight examples:
Fridges– we can tell from its energy signature whether a fridge is running efficiently. Most utilities are now selling white goods, so if you can offer money saving advice to your customers who have an inefficient fridge and generate an additional revenue stream then everyone is happy.
Smart thermostats – Again, most utilities sell these products. We ran a project for a UK utility who blanket marketed their base of several million customers with a low take up and a high cost per campaign. We identified that only 28% of their customers had a varied energy consumption pattern which would actually benefit from having a smart thermostat. So instantly they could take a decision to save 70% of their campaign budget and be more targeted in their approach.
