WHAT IS AWS EC2?
• Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) provides scalable computing capacity in the Amazon Web
Services (AWS) cloud.
• Using Amazon EC2 eliminates your need to invest in hardware so you can develop and
deploy applications faster
• Amazon EC2 to launch as many or as few virtual servers as you need, configure security
and networking, and manage storage
• Amazon EC2 enables you to scale up or down to handle changes in requirements or
spikes in popularity.
FEATURES OF EC2
• Virtual computing environment known as Instance
• AMI (Amazon Machine Image) contains OS and other software
• Various configurations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking capacity
• Multiple physical locations for your resources (access from anywhere)
• Easily integrate with other AWS service
– Virtual Private Cloud
EC2 & AMI
• An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a template that contains a software configuration
(for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications).
• Using an AMI, you launch an instance, which is a copy of the AMI running as a virtual
server in the cloud. You can launch multiple instances of an AMI,
• Select an instance type based on the amount of memory and computing power as per
the requirement
STORAGE FOR INSTANCE
• The root device for your instance contains the image used to boot the instance.
• Your instance may include local storage volumes, known as instance store volumes,
which you can configure at launch time with block device mapping.
• After these volumes have been added to and mapped on your instance, they are
available for you to mount and use
• You can use block device mapping to specify additional EBS volumes or instance store
volumes to attach to an instance
Basic concepts of EC2
REGION AND AVAILABILITY ZONES
• Regions: -
– The geographical area where Amazon EC2 will launch the instances that you create. Each region
is completely independent.
• Availability Zones: -
– Distinct locations that are engineered to be insulated from failures in other Availability Zones
– When you launch an instance, you can select an Availability Zone
INSTANCE TYPES
• When you launch an instance, the instance type that you specify determines the
hardware of the host computer
• Each instance type offers different compute, memory, and storage capabilities and are
grouped in instance families based on these capabilities.
• Select an instance type based on the requirements
• Types of EC2 instance: -
– General purpose
– Compute optimized
– Memory optimized
– Storage optimized
– Accelerated computing
INSTANCE PURCHASING OPTIONS
• On-Demand instances: Pay by the hour, for the instances that you launch.
• Reserved Instances: Purchase, at a significant discount, instances that are always available,
for a term from one to three years.
• Scheduled Instances: Purchase instances that are always available on the specified recurring
schedule, for a one-year term.
• Spot instances: Bid on unused instances, which can run as long as they are available and
your bid is above the Spot price, at a significant discount.
• Dedicated hosts : Pay for a physical host that is fully dedicated to running your instances,
and bring your existing per-socket, per-core, or per-VM software licenses to reduce costs.
• Dedicated instances : Pay by the hour, for instances that run on single-tenant hardware.
INSTANCE LIFE CYCLE
EC2 KEY PAIRS
• Amazon EC2 uses public–key cryptography to encrypt and decrypt login information.
• Public–key cryptography uses a public key to encrypt a piece of data, such as a
password, then the recipient uses the private key to decrypt the data. The public and
private keys are known as a key pair.
• To log in to your instance, you must create a key pair, specify the name of the key pair
when you launch the instance, and provide the private key when you connect to the
instance.
• Amazon EC2 stores the public key only, and you store the private key. Anyone who
possesses your private key can decrypt your login information, so it's important that
you store your private keys in a secure place.
• The keys that Amazon EC2 uses are 2048-bit SSH-2 RSA keys. You can have up to five
thousand key pairs per region.
• When you delete a key pair, you are only deleting Amazon EC2's copy of the public key
• Deleting a key pair doesn't affect the private key
• You can't launch a new instance using a deleted key pair, but you can continue to
connect to any instances that you launched using a deleted key pair, as long as you
still have the private key (.pem) file.
Storage
• EBS volume is network attached drive which results in slow performance but data is
persistent meaning even if you reboot the instance data will be there.
• Instance store is physically attached device which gives better performance but data
will be lost once instance is rebooted.
Elastic Load Balancing
• Elastic Load Balancing distributes incoming application or network traffic across multiple
targets, such as Amazon EC2 instances, containers, and IP addresses, in multiple Availability
Zones.
Why?
• Increases the availability and fault tolerance of your applications.
• Maximize the through put
• Minimize the response time
• Avoid the overload on single instance
• Optimize the resource use
• Provides High Availability : 99.99 %
Auto Scaling
• Auto Scaling is the service that provides helps to ensure that cloud consumer have efficient
no of instances to handle load for its application
• Load increase : Employ one new instance
• Load decrease : release one instance
• Auto Scaling group
– No of EC2 instance
– Min
– Max
• Scaling options:
– Manual : min and max user provide
– Scheduled : on of instance => f(time)
– Dynamic
Pricing
ON-DEMAND
SPOT INSTANCE
SAVING PLANS
• Savings Plans offers up to 72% savings in exchange for a commitment to consistent
amount of usage for a 1- or 3-year term.

Aws ec2

  • 2. G. H. PATEL COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY Subject : Cloud Infrastructure and Services Topic : AWS EC2 Batch : 1D16 Term : Even Year : 2019-20 Guided by : Prof. Jay Wala Presented by : Bhavik Vashi (160110116061)
  • 3.
  • 4. CONTENT • Introduction to AWS EC2 • Features of EC2 • Basic Concepts of EC2. – Instances and AMIs – Regions and Availability Zones. – Instance Types. • Storage • Elastic Load balancing • Auto Scaling • Amazon EC2 Pricing
  • 5. WHAT IS AWS EC2? • Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) provides scalable computing capacity in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. • Using Amazon EC2 eliminates your need to invest in hardware so you can develop and deploy applications faster • Amazon EC2 to launch as many or as few virtual servers as you need, configure security and networking, and manage storage • Amazon EC2 enables you to scale up or down to handle changes in requirements or spikes in popularity.
  • 6. FEATURES OF EC2 • Virtual computing environment known as Instance • AMI (Amazon Machine Image) contains OS and other software • Various configurations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking capacity • Multiple physical locations for your resources (access from anywhere) • Easily integrate with other AWS service – Virtual Private Cloud
  • 7. EC2 & AMI • An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a template that contains a software configuration (for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications). • Using an AMI, you launch an instance, which is a copy of the AMI running as a virtual server in the cloud. You can launch multiple instances of an AMI, • Select an instance type based on the amount of memory and computing power as per the requirement
  • 8. STORAGE FOR INSTANCE • The root device for your instance contains the image used to boot the instance. • Your instance may include local storage volumes, known as instance store volumes, which you can configure at launch time with block device mapping. • After these volumes have been added to and mapped on your instance, they are available for you to mount and use • You can use block device mapping to specify additional EBS volumes or instance store volumes to attach to an instance
  • 10. REGION AND AVAILABILITY ZONES • Regions: - – The geographical area where Amazon EC2 will launch the instances that you create. Each region is completely independent. • Availability Zones: - – Distinct locations that are engineered to be insulated from failures in other Availability Zones – When you launch an instance, you can select an Availability Zone
  • 11. INSTANCE TYPES • When you launch an instance, the instance type that you specify determines the hardware of the host computer • Each instance type offers different compute, memory, and storage capabilities and are grouped in instance families based on these capabilities. • Select an instance type based on the requirements • Types of EC2 instance: - – General purpose – Compute optimized – Memory optimized – Storage optimized – Accelerated computing
  • 12. INSTANCE PURCHASING OPTIONS • On-Demand instances: Pay by the hour, for the instances that you launch. • Reserved Instances: Purchase, at a significant discount, instances that are always available, for a term from one to three years. • Scheduled Instances: Purchase instances that are always available on the specified recurring schedule, for a one-year term. • Spot instances: Bid on unused instances, which can run as long as they are available and your bid is above the Spot price, at a significant discount. • Dedicated hosts : Pay for a physical host that is fully dedicated to running your instances, and bring your existing per-socket, per-core, or per-VM software licenses to reduce costs. • Dedicated instances : Pay by the hour, for instances that run on single-tenant hardware.
  • 14. EC2 KEY PAIRS • Amazon EC2 uses public–key cryptography to encrypt and decrypt login information. • Public–key cryptography uses a public key to encrypt a piece of data, such as a password, then the recipient uses the private key to decrypt the data. The public and private keys are known as a key pair. • To log in to your instance, you must create a key pair, specify the name of the key pair when you launch the instance, and provide the private key when you connect to the instance. • Amazon EC2 stores the public key only, and you store the private key. Anyone who possesses your private key can decrypt your login information, so it's important that you store your private keys in a secure place. • The keys that Amazon EC2 uses are 2048-bit SSH-2 RSA keys. You can have up to five thousand key pairs per region.
  • 15. • When you delete a key pair, you are only deleting Amazon EC2's copy of the public key • Deleting a key pair doesn't affect the private key • You can't launch a new instance using a deleted key pair, but you can continue to connect to any instances that you launched using a deleted key pair, as long as you still have the private key (.pem) file.
  • 17.
  • 18. • EBS volume is network attached drive which results in slow performance but data is persistent meaning even if you reboot the instance data will be there. • Instance store is physically attached device which gives better performance but data will be lost once instance is rebooted.
  • 20. • Elastic Load Balancing distributes incoming application or network traffic across multiple targets, such as Amazon EC2 instances, containers, and IP addresses, in multiple Availability Zones. Why? • Increases the availability and fault tolerance of your applications. • Maximize the through put • Minimize the response time • Avoid the overload on single instance • Optimize the resource use • Provides High Availability : 99.99 %
  • 22. • Auto Scaling is the service that provides helps to ensure that cloud consumer have efficient no of instances to handle load for its application • Load increase : Employ one new instance • Load decrease : release one instance • Auto Scaling group – No of EC2 instance – Min – Max
  • 23. • Scaling options: – Manual : min and max user provide – Scheduled : on of instance => f(time) – Dynamic
  • 27. SAVING PLANS • Savings Plans offers up to 72% savings in exchange for a commitment to consistent amount of usage for a 1- or 3-year term.
