STRANGERS By Megan Shepherd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpjHSiQLPmA
About the Film... Was made in 2004 by Ereztadmor & Guy Nattiv. The film is about diversity in religion and also relationships of two rivalling people, when they both come under trouble. Its Institution is Fox Spotlight. (Obviously)
Micro Analysis. As seen, there is little dialogue in the film. It is not needed due to the facial expressions and obvious symbols used. (Such as the star of David and the Arabic newspaper. This means that the film is suitable for any country and its audience. The audiences of this film would have to be old enough to understand the cultural differences and relations for it to make sense to them. Probably Teenage plus.
Micro analysis The camera angles are mostly close ups and mid shots on the 2 main characters reactions. This compensates for the lack of dialogue. We see there relationship through the shots. There are hand held effects used, since its on a train; The camera jolts, making the audience feel like they are there, in the awkward situation. There is a pan to the Neo Nazis, it shows the aggression of the characters.
Micro analysis The framing in the shots of the main characters are usually central, but also off to the side a little. This shows they are the most important but also hinting at a distance between the two. The props that are included in the shots remain the same the whole way through (Bag and Newspaper). Shot reverse shot is used when they exchange glances. Match on action – Stepping onto train etc.
Micro analysis Obviously, it is set on a train, in a foreign country. Atmosphere is built up here, but making the setting a confined space. Causing more tension within the scene. There is dull lighting on the train creating foreboding. The jewish star necklace, Arabic newspaper and the Neo Nazi Tattoos all show differences between the characters. And are easy to understand that they will not get along.
Micro Anaylis There is the religious chanting when the Neo Nazi's are in the scene. This helps creates tension and puts the audience on edge. I would say this short film crosses over from action, slice of life and drama in genre terms. There are fast, straight cuts, with quick pace near the end with the chase. The film shows the reality of different cultures and beliefs.
Micro Analysis The film follows a Linear narrative, which is straight forward to follow. So its easily understood by the audience. The audience will respond with relief at the end of the film, since we build a relationship between the two characters. We then see them part, getting on with usual lives. I think that the lesson it is teaching is to “Love thy neighbour” – Helping someone who you’d normally dislike, and avoiding trouble.
The End.
