6. Nursing Now – the global campaign
In collaboration with the World Health Organisation and the International Council
of Nurses, Nursing Now aims to raise the status and profile of nursing
As health professionals closest to the public, nurses should be empowered to
use their knowledge, skills and expertise to the full. They should be valued
and respected for their pivotal role at the heart of most health teams
• More than 80 countries are signed up
• Nightingale Challenge 2020 launched
• 2020 is The Year of The Nurse
We launched Nursing Now England 10 Dec 2018

7. Nursing Now
Sept 2015, nations sign up to an
ambitious goal of ensuring
everyone in the world should
have access to health care –
universal health coverage and
that nobody should be left
behind. (APPG 2016)
The Triple Impact Report
acknowledges that this cannot be
achieved without strengthening
nursing: this means we need
more nurses and equally
important nurses need to shape
and influence health policy
Nursing Now – the global campaign

“The truth is, the gender confidence gap is real. For centuries, women
have been told that they are not good enough to receive an education,
not good enough to be able to vote, not good enough to have the
same jobs, power, and pay as men.
They have been told this so often that deep down they have learned to
believe it, even though their conscious mind knows it isn’t true. So
sometimes we women are our own worst barrier to change due to
our learned self-criticism, our internalized misogyny, which
cements our status as the ‘other woman” – someone who never
feels quite at home with success.
As a starting point, we must learn to confront this self criticism in order
to embrace a diverse society.”

Following the launch at CNO Summit 2017 phase 1 was shaped by a think tank and advisory group. A crowd
sourcing approach was adopted to gather ideas and stories in 3 separate themes, namely; Young People in
Education, Current Nurses and Midwives and Decision makers.
The ideas generated, through 25,000 interactions, were themed to develop the Enemies and the Building
Blocks to positive perceptions.
These ideas were tested in a hackathon held at the CNO summit 2018 with Ambassadors nominated by Chief
Nurses, Heads of Midwifery and Directors of Nursing.
A further workshop with Caremakers, Student Nurses and Student Midwives confirmed the issues identified and
has shaped this proposal for Phase 2 of the work. 215 Ambassadors were identified and contributed to Phase 1
and have continued to contribute to the programme in Phase 2.

Who can be an Ambassador?
• Everyone from first year students to all registrants on NMC and supporters
• Newly qualified nurses
• Practitioners from all stages in their career across all disciplines and sectors
• Those in full and part time employment
• People working across health and care sectors, including voluntary organisations
We are igniting a social movement across the system and our ambition is that the network
grows to over 5,000 nursing now ambassadors by March 2020
The ambassadors are all championing the wonderful profession and opportunities in nursing

An Ambassador …
Acts as a local ambassador for nursing and midwifery, representing our professions in a
positive light and by doing so, building awareness and positive perceptions
Creates a bridge between activities to promote nursing and midwifery locally and the
nationwide campaign
Speaks for local organisations and the nurses and midwives in them within the national
campaign
Brings back the ideas and calls to action from the national campaign to customise,
remix and reshape them so they will work in a local context
Leads the local version of the campaign and get people engaged and taking action

are stronger together

Using the template on slide 27 create a dice to use for this activity. Alternatively you can add the 6 statements (including which number they are) to this slide and use a normal dice.
The Nightingale Challenge 2020 was launched on the first anniversary of Nursing Now and calls for every large employer of nurses globally to provide leadership and development training for 20 young nurses and midwives next year.
You may want to mention here the story of Jessica who was initially refused a Guiness World Record because the rules for a nurses uniform were outdated. The power of nurses on social media over turned this decision #WhatNursesWear. We are currently planning a 30 Day Challenge which will be for Ambassadors to take part in a local Parkrun (walking, running or marshalling) collectively in our uniforms.
PROMPT: Ask your audience to raise their hand if they would recommend nursing to their children/family and friends. If time allows they could have a conversation in small groups about this point.
Prompt: the opportunities for nursing are greater than the challenges
PROMPT: Ask your audience to have a 5 minute table conversation on what they have heard so far. If time allows you could also ask each table to feedback one striking point and one idea or potential solution.
PROMPT: Ask your audience to share on their table which challenges they have done or which they may be interested in taking part in.
PROMPT: Click on the picture in the middle to play the video in slideshow. After playing the video ask your audience to have a table conversation about the key issues for recruiting Nursing Now England Ambassadors locally. Design your recruitment campaign – thinking wider than a single organisation.
PROMPT: Encourage your audience to sign up today before their leave your session by logging onto the links above
PROMPT: Take pictures with this posters and tweet them – don’t forget the hashtags: #IND2019 #NursingNowEngland
