2. Lesson 1
Objectives:
Use analog clock to model a time, record the time in
numbers and words.
Content
I will explore the use of the minute and hour hand by
manipulating an analog clock.
Language
I will write the time shown in word form.
5. Teacher Introduces
(Linguistically/Non-linguistically)
Analog Clock
A clock that shows the time of
day with an hour hand and a
minute hand.
6. Student Processes
O’CLOCK: minute hand at the 12 (Linguistically/Non-linguistically)
QUARTER AFTER __: minute hand at
3
HALF PAST __: minute hand at the 6
QUARTER ‘TIL ___: minute hand at 9
Minute Hand
Positions
7. Telling Time
1. The hour hand is between the
7 and 8 , so the hour is 7: ___.
2. The minute hand is between 9
and 10 , so count clockwise (to
the right) by 5s starting at the
12 ending at 9. That gives us
45 minutes.
3. Count on by 1s until you reach
the minute hand, that give us
48 minutes. So the time is 7:48.
8. Student Processes
(Linguistically/Non-linguistically)
Try it and write it
2:22
11:34
4:10
10. Time to Practice “Time”

HAVE ANALOG CLOCKS READY FOR STUDENTS TO GRAB
MAKE SURE EACH STUDENT HAS AN ANALOG CLOCKPlace your index finger on the hour hand and mirror the clock on display.Repeat the process with the minute hand. Does anyone know what time it is here?Let’s explore how we would say what time it is in different ways.Into how many equal parts can we divide the analog clock? Two equal parts so, this is one half. The half reaches the six.Can we separate it into more equal parts? Four equal parts as shown. Where does the first fourth end? The second? The third? And the fourth?
HERE WE ARE GOING TO SEE ONLY THE MINUTE HAND SO WE KNOW HOW TO SAY THE TIME IN DIFFERENT WAYS.The samples are on the board so you can refer to them as we continue.
I’m going to mirror the clock on display, you do the same by moving the hour and minute hands.Get ready to do the steps on DISPLAY CHART PREVIOUSLY PREPARED!Write time in numbers and words: numbers: 7:48 words: seven forty eight
Students try it in groups.
Father Time Says: “ Father Time Says when everyone in your group knows the answer put your head down.HAVE BOARD SIGNS CLOSE BYOnce everyone is done, stick will determine who tells me the time. Popsicle stick name will grab a sign from the board. Raise hand to apply time with each cloze sentence. Now try it with number four, five and six.
Distribute papers and time for name and date. Walk around for assistance.
