MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and
explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within
your own cultural communities?
â Culturally (asian culture) it is seen as "it's all in your head"
â Not really spoken about (Black culture)
â In my culture (Mexican), it's something we ignore.. "suck it up, I had it
worse"
â Black culture - being over dramatic
â I feel like parents don't understand mental health of their children or
don't take us seriously
â There is no such thing as mental health and mental illness in my
community. Someone can be having a mental health breakdown and
it will be rumoured that they are cursed, have had a spell put on
them, are devil worshippers, etc.
â They never talked about it growing up so they don't think it's relevant
and they survived it so we should to.....

How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
â Isolating
â Sometimes it feels like maybe everyone's right &
you ARE making it up.
â People might think you're being too "sensitive" or
"dramatic"
â stigma dehumanizes people's natural feelings
22. #Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
â You look weak when reaching out for help
â you can't ïŹgure it out yourself
â reaching out for help can be scary
â The "roles" we feel pressured to perform. Like in the short ïŹlm,
the need to hide softness just to be respected.
â lack of understanding from our own family and friends makes
us reluctant to get help
â People not understanding or downplaying your emotions
â Or they compare your situations to theirs or to other people
and invalidate your feelings, "I've had worse, yours is not that
bad" "there are many people out there who are suffering more
than you, you should be happy with your life"

What are some practices
that help support
your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
â create a community
â although we may ïŹnd that we are busy we have to accept
and not feel guilty of taking time for ourselves
â Get some sleep!!! Its a simple task that sometimes we don't
think much about but it honestly helps mentally
â Move your body, go for a walk, dance or do some exercise
â I've been trying to relax my mind and tell myself that I don't
need to compare myself to others, I don't need to always
constantly achieve things (good grades, money,...) in order
to feel "not-useless" or "better than other people"
