3. Prepared by CeL, NIE Singapore for iJC's NMiEF SL Conference 3 Good Morning students! The 1st item on today’s briefing agenda will be the Itinerary for our learning journey to TanjungPiai… Firstly, everyone of you are expected to bring along a 3G enabled camera phone. Secondly, download the app I-nigma to your mobile phones.
4. Prepared by CeL, NIE Singapore for iJC's NMiEF SL Conference 4 I’ve got a question, Mr. Kenny! Is the 3G enabled camera phone compulsory? Absolutely Bernard! We have planned a mobile-learning activity - scavenger hunt at TanjungPiai National Park. The camera phone will be a tool to use in this activity with your group mates. Got it! Will arrange to get one before the trip.
6. Prepared by CeL, NIE Singapore for iJC's NMiEF SL Conference 6 Good Morning students! To start our first activity, please ensure the following are in order: You are in your respective groups Possess your own camera phone Inserted the given 3G SIM Card to your camera phones I-nigma app is installed
7. Prepared by CeL, NIE Singapore for iJC's NMiEF SL Conference 7 Now refer to your hand-out. Launch your I-nigma app & capture a “shot” of the black-white tiled code. This code is referred to as QR Code. Around the park, when you come across a QR code, launch your I-nigma app to decode it and look-out for a clue/activity. This activity lasts 15 mins so every group is to report to this very location at 11.15am. Remember, Safety First! If there are no questions, your time starts now!
8. Prepared by CeL, NIE Singapore for iJC's NMiEF SL Conference 8 That was a very enriching learning experience, Mr. Kenny! That’s great to hear Bernard! What did you enjoy most? I loved how we didn’t have to listen to boring talks on the plants or animals! We learnt through discovering the facts on our own & through contributions from the other groups in real-time!
9. So what actually took place? Teachers identified “points-of-interest” & put up QR codes QR codes are linked to online resources, class wiki, group blogs, quizzes & polls At every “point-of-interest”, students record their observation & upload photos/audio recordings to the wiki/blogs or answer questions via quiz or poll Upon completing their activity, they will retrieve their code for the next destination The team that completes the activity first gets rewarded Teams with quality contributions also gets rewarded Prepared by CeL, NIE Singapore for iJC's NMiEF SL Conference 9

31. Why use it? Prepared by CeL, NIE Singapore for iJC's NMiEF SL Conference 31
32. Why is it significant? The idea of linking spaces to information - accessing information connected to locations and objects on-the-go Because QR codes are so inexpensive, they might even be printed as stickers and temporarily added to campus signs for a class activity. 33. Strengths | Weaknesses Link the physical world with the virtual by providing on-the-spot access to online resources for objects and locations Expand pedagogical value in exercises that draw students into creating and contributing content Browser-based so codes can be used to read in languages besides just English Not intuitive Not all mobile phones has a QR reader available Challenges remain to find appropriate and effective pedagogical uses of QR codes Prepared by CeL, NIE Singapore for iJC's NMiEF SL Conference 33

The idea of linking spaces to information is not new, but QR codes combine simple creation with easy access to QR code readers. As a result, QR codes might kick-start widespread thinking and innovation around information connected to locations and objects. In museums, for example, QR codes might appear on plaques beside art displays, directing patrons to information about the artwork and the artist. QR codes posted on a building might offer visitors the history of the building itself or the corner on which it stands, and they might give the architect’s name or discuss the events happening in the city when the building was built. At botanical gardens, codes could direct users to information about the medicinal uses or food value of botanical specimens on display or offer data about the climate or soil requirements necessary for certain plants to thrive.
