Vous souhaitez faire le pas vers le cloud mais ne savez pas par ou commencer ? Pourquoi pas par votre infrastructure. Optimisez vos coûts, gagnez en flexibilité et en performance avec le cloud Oracle.
Welcome. Thank you for joining me today.
Hi I’m <rep name here>.
I would like to walk you through our Oracle Cloud Infrastructure story, and make clear for you how we have specifically and uniquely created cloud infrastructure to best meet the needs of all businesses with specific focus on the enterprise. Let’s dig in.
When we start talking about cloud, we have to begin with this incredible transformation that we are all experiencing in the market today.
Cloud really is changing everything.
It’s changing how businesses run and people work; it’s creating new categories and disrupting existing categories,
It’s happening at an incredible speed and is here today
The benefits for cloud are so strong, that adoption is inevitable. However, we’re still in early days.
Only a small portion of enterprise workloads are in the cloud today. Its generally agreed upon that only about 15-30% of the workloads are in the cloud today
(According to RightScale’s 2018 State of the Cloud Report, among enterprises, only 32 percent of workloads run in public cloud).
When you think about all the workloads that haven’t moved yet, it’s the enterprise, mission-critical, legacy workloads that have yet to move.
We believe we’re in the best position of any cloud provider to help enterprises adopt cloud for a host of reasons we will cover today.
So what are the ways in which companies are trying to move to the Cloud?
Two primary categories are driving customers to consider and move workloads to IaaS…
increasing the pace of innovation,
Companies have undertaken the digital transformation – they are connecting with their customers digitally, wherever they are – this results in all sorts of customer-facing applications, chatbots, etc. facilitating customer interaction. Launching these quickly is essential to remain competitive in today’s market.
and doing it for a lower overall level of spend.
Nothing has changed here over the years – “doing more with less” is often the mantra of corporate IT. Now of course the cloud has made this a reality by eliminating the vicious capacity planning and refresh cycles associated with on-premises HW and SW, and the cloud offers flexible, Pay-As-You-Go pricing models.
There’s a difference between using public cloud only, in a standalone way, vs. using cloud as a pillar of your enterprise IT strategy.
Many vendors today can provide you commodity, multi-tenant cloud infrastructure as a service, but cant provide you a solution that comprehends both public cloud and on-premises needs,
(with the connectivity to make it a fully integrated hybrid solution)
Our enterprise customers seek a similar degree of isolation to what they currently have in their on-premises environments today - because enterprise Apps require consistent, reliable performance
Enterprises require support for the myriad of operating systems, hypervisors, management and monitoring tools, and other technologies that they have acquired over time. They seek platforms that are open, in an effort to avoid lock-in
Enterprises need cloud infrastructure that enables them to migrate applications from their existing on-premises data centers to cloud without being forced to re-architect – and then run them side by side with the new, modern apps they are creating
Enterprises sometimes need to deploy systems in a hybrid model across on-premises and public cloud environments.
And finally, enterprises require transparency of costs, pricing and consumption. This is a key missing ingredient with the first-generation cloud providers. I talk to too many customers that experience unpleasant “hidden cost surprises” with other cloud providers. One even built a team to manage these bills.
Your move to cloud should add IT benefits without taking away anything you have today. Isn’t that what you’re seeking – you’re seeking an Enterprise grade cloud platform to run your business on.
No IT organization wants to give away the benefits of the on-premises datacenter… but not all of the requirements here are met by them.
So, what does an enterprise grade cloud platform look like if this is the set of requirements it must fulfill?
With our IaaS offering, which we call Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or OCI, we’ve built a cloud that enables you to retain the benefits enterprises have become accustomed to from their on-premises corporate data centers, while enhancing them with the public cloud benefits (on-demand, self-service, scalable, elastic, and metered)
The combination of these two sets of benefits enable OCI to offer a cloud without compromise, purpose built for enterprises.
The Oracle cloud strategy is to offer the best cloud infrastructure not only for Oracle Applications, but for Oracle SaaS, Oracle Database and Platform services, and enhance it with the open ecosystem.
And we’re the only major provider to offer the same platform with flexible deployment options, including on-premises, all managed by Oracle.
Let’s get deeper now into how OCI is different from what’s been previously leading in the IaaS marketplace.
These four key differentiating categories represent the core of how OCI is different, and is a step forward from other providers.
We will cover each of these now.
(CONCISE NOTES)
HPC, REAL-TIME ANALYTICS AND HIGHLY TRANSCATIONAL DBs REQUIRE A LEVEL OF PEAK PERFORMANCE AND PREDICTABILITY NOT FOUND IN 1ST GEN CSPS –
CAN’T OVEREMPHASIZE PREDICTABILITY (YEARS OF APP/DB/INFRA TUNING)
YET 1ST GEN OFFER HYPERVISOR-BASED INFRA W/ OLDER TECH – HOW CAN U EXPECT PREDICTABILITY?
OCI OFFERS HIGH SCALE, HIGH BW NW THAT CONNECTS DENSE AND FAST SERVERS TO HIGH PERF FILE, BLOCK AND OBJECT STORAGE
OCIs MODERN INFRA SUSTAINS MILLIONS OF TRANSACTIONS PER SECOND WITH BEST PRICE/PERF
BARE METAL FASTEST IN INDUSTRY – NO OVERSUBSCRIPTION OF COMPUTE OR NW
FLASH-BASED BLOCK CHANGING WHATS POSSIBLE – NO CHARGE FOR IOPS – SO MORE DEMANDING YOUR APPS…THE MORE ECONOMICAL OUR PRICING BECOMES
(VERBOSE NOTES)
High performance computing, real-time analytics, transactional database applications, and many other applications require a level of peak performance and predictability that is typically unavailable in first generation cloud providers (even the market leader AWS only recently announced GA for its i3 bare metal product (may 2018)
Predictability cannot be over-emphasized. We understand that IT and DBA staff have tuned “traditional” application and database enterprise workloads for years
OCI delivers the most predictable performance due to our decision to not over-subscribe compute servers or the core network (oversubscription being the practice of providing less than 100% of the capacity to each user they are sold with the belief that the case where all users will consume 100% of their purchased capacity happens extremely rarely), thereby providing very stable and predictable performance even when other tenant workloads fluctuate.
Only Oracle offers multiple single tenant options for raw compute and Oracle database, giving customers neighbor-free, hypervisor-free performance: Bare metal compute, Database Cloud Service on bare metal, Database Cloud Service with RAC, and Exadata Cloud Service on bare metal
OCI offers a high throughput network that connects very dense and fast servers to very high performance file, block and object storage.
Oracle’s modern infrastructure is purpose-built to achieve and sustain millions of transactions per second within a single compute instance at a significantly superior price per transaction.
Oracle bare metal servers remain the fastest in the industry (as of May 2018)
Our flash-based storage options are changing the “what’s possible” in the cloud.
For example, our Oracle Block Storage is a fraction of the cost of its competitor’s due to 2 factors: 1) its all flash-based and 2) our unique cost model that does not charge extra for performance (we don’t charge by the IOPS). This leads to a scenario whereby the more IOPS a workload consumes, the more expensive our competitors’ offerings become, and thus the more favorable Oracle Block Storage is.
All of these benefits are geared towards providing the best platform for running enterprise, mission-critical applications.
(CONCISE NOTES)
SECURITY IS A CORE DESIGN PRINCIPLE.
INTEGRATED GOVERNANCE THROUGH – COMPARTMENTS + IAM + RBAC AND GRANULAR ALLOCATION, CONSUMPTION AND AUDITING
EG. COMPARTMENTS – VIA POLICY ASSIGN USAGE QUOTAS ON PER-PROJECT, PER-PERSON OR PER-GROUP BASIS – AND ALL USAGE ROLLS UP TO THE MASTER ACCT.
WE ISOLATE ACROSS COMPUTE AND NW
PRIVATE LAYER 3 SW-DEFINED NW – ENCAPULATING AS SOON AS IT ENTERS EDGE OF OUR CLOUD
BARE METAL = SINGLE TENANT – ISOLATED WITH NO SHARED ANYTHING / NO PROVIDER SW
AUDITING SERVICES PROVIDE VISIBILITY INTO ALL API ACTIVITIES WITHIN A TENANCY
(VERBOSE NOTES)
OCI offers enterprises integrated governance through a combination of compartments, Identity and Access management, role-based access controls (RBAC) and granular consumption, allocation and auditing capabilities - - so that enterprises are not forced to compromise their governance practices when moving to our cloud.
With OCIs compartment service, central IT maintains the visibility and control required to manage access and usage thus helping manage spend while end users retain the fast on-demand provisioning and elasticity they require.
Compartments allow you to assign access policies and usage quotas a per-project, per-person or per-group basis, enabling IT administrators to manage multiple environments via policy and also gain clarity as to who is consuming what resource
Importantly, all usage is also rolled up under a single account structure, rather than hundreds of accounts that must be aggregated as is common in the industry today.
(As you would expect, the Identity and Access Management (IAM) service lets users control who has access to cloud resources, with robust grouping capabilities yet simple to define policies.)
Finally, our auditing service provides visibility into all API activities within a tenancy
Security is a core design principle. Within our infrastructure we isolate compute and network resources, ensuring that no customer can see any other customer’s data or traffic. OCI allows customers to deploy their workloads on cloud infrastructure where no vendor software of any kind is running – no hypervisors, agents…nothing. This provides OCI customers an additional level of isolation from the cloud service provider itself that is not available from any other vendor.
OCI isolates every customer’s traffic in a completely private Layer 3 software-defined overlay network, fully encapsulating traffic as soon as it enters the edge of our Cloud, thereby ensuring that no customer can see any other customer’s traffic.
OCI bare metal servers are single tenant and isolated from all other tenants – they share no processor or memory space with any other tenant – and, no vendor software of any kind is running on those machines – no hypervisors, agents…nothing.
We understand you have applications running on traditional infrastructure, have committed decisions around platforms, languages and other architectural approaches. OCI allows you to bring those over as it offers an additional level of isolation from the cloud service provider itself – you won’t find this elsewhere.
(CONCISE NOTES)
WHILE OCI OFFERS GLOBAL FOOTPRINT, THERE ARE TIMES WHEN REGS / CORP MANDATES REQUIRE LOCAL DATA RESIDENCY – CLOUD AT CUSTOMER
BROADEST VARIETY OF DEPLOYMENT OPTIONS – BARE METAL AND VMs WHERE YOU CAN RUN MICROSERVICE-BASED OPTIONS OR THE THE OPPOSITE END OF THE SPECTRUM, EXADATA – ALL ON THE SAME NETWORKING FABRIC
COMBINE THIS WITH OUR ON-PREM OPTIONS AND OF COURSE SAAS OPTIONS TO HARNESS THE POWER OF OUR COMPLETE PORTFOLIO OF SERVICES
OCI ACTS AS THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR PAAS SERVICES – AND WE FOCUS ON INTEROPERABILITY
(VERBOSE NOTES)
Broadest Choice in Deployment Options – On-premises, Cloud, Cloud at Customer
Oracle’s Cloud Platform provides customers with the widest choice of deployment options to meet the business needs of enterprises and statutory requirements enforced by government agencies.
Oracle cloud provides options for on-premises, cloud, and cloud at customer deployments. This range of deployment options is unparalleled within the industry, and provides a distinct advantage for customers who choose Oracle as their cloud vendor in terms of flexibility, cost control, and protection of existing investments.
At Oracle: Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure and Platform can be consumed within Oracle’s Cloud Data Centers that are rapidly expanding in many locations around the world.
At Customer: Oracle also offers its Cloud Platform as a fully managed service with a metered or subscription pricing model in a customer’s own data center. This is particularly designed to address customers who are in countries where statutory requirements ensure local data residency and for customers whose corporate policies do not allow Public Cloud deployments for certain classes of workload.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure also provides foundational support for Oracle’s broad and leading platform services, allowing developers to build modern applications – to run big data and analytics workloads, and to integrate, secure, and manage cloud services whether or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or other cloud
Broadest Choice in IaaS – Compute, Storage, Network
Oracle provides the broadest variety of deployment options from a single vendor in market today – bare metal servers, virtual servers, on-premises systems (both traditional on-premises systems and on-premises cloud via Cloud at Customer) – and network connectivity options to enable hybrid.
From supporting traditional applications with the lowest latency, highest performance, and highest isolation possible with bare metal compute, to VM and container-based applications, Oracle has the best support of traditional and modern workloads.
Only Oracle supports the full range of availability models, from mission critical to lower tiers, providing zero data loss with the appropriate recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPOs) at different price points: local clusters, remote backup, active-passive, active-active, or combinations at the application, database, storage, and physical infrastructure levels
For customers connecting their data center to the Oracle cloud we offer secure, dedicated connectivity via our FastConnect products and of course we offer secure, internet-based VPN options. Our modern IaaS infrastructure provides a Virtual Cloud Network (VCN) offering customers network isolation (for security) and configuration flexibility (for ease of use).
From enterprise extensions via VPN or FastConnect, and network modeling via our Virtual Cloud Network (VCN), Oracle supports the networking performance and control that enterprises require. Acting as an extension to existing enterprise networking topologies allows companies to bring their private IPs over to our cloud, thus not having to re-write that code.
(CONCISE NOTES)
SO FAR…GENERIC APPS SUPPORT, LETS SHARPEN FOCUS TO ORACLE APPS
HOW MANY OF YOU ARE RUNNING E-Business Suite, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft or Seibel in your own data center today .AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT, WE’VE OPTIMIZED FOR THIS
MIGRATION TOOLS CAN EVEN HELP MOVE CUSTOMIZATIONS
LETS NOT FORGET ABOUT THE DATA THAT SITS BEHIND APPS (DBS, 2-NODE RAC, EXA)
ON TOP OF THAT, ITS FAST. 2-node RAC DB configs and AU APPS yielding performance far beyond what they have experienced on premises.
(VERBOSE NOTES):
OCI has a number of architectural design optimizations and tools that are geared to migrate and/or run Oracle’s Databases and business applications portfolio with unmatched scalability and reliability.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure provides the advantage of Architectural Optimization to our customers in the following ways:
Oracle Real Application Clusters
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure has foundational support to run Oracle Real Application Clusters with excellent performance, scalability, and reliability allowing customers to build and migrate mission critical workloads.
Oracle Engineered Systems
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure has deep integration with Oracle Exadata to provide very high performance and excellent scalability for very high performance transaction processing and data warehousing workloads.
Oracle Applications
OCI offers a suite of migration, provisioning and management tools for key Oracle “Apps Unlimited” applications helping customers with their transition to cloud.
Oracle Databases
Optimized to run Oracle Databases, benchmarking results show Oracle databases run more than 30x faster than AWS Aurora, with 105x faster analytics results than Redshift (when running on Oracle Bare Metal servers), and at up to 28% lower cost, meaning customers get data-driven results faster and at a lower cost with Oracle.
Database technology on AWS is 20 years behind Oracle. AWS requires 3 different databases – Aurora for OLTP workloads, Redshift for Analytics, and Dynamo DB for in-memory processing, whereas Oracle can support mixed workloads in a single database. So, with AWS multiple services must be purchased and then manually integrated.
And so…why is that, well…lets shift gears for a moment and dive into the infrastructure for a few moments.
