1. Rolls Royce Marine
- A Student’s Perspective -
For over 180 years Rolls Royce has been a contender in the maritime industry. The company
name is unambiguously synonymous with safety, quality, and reputation for high tech solutions.
A little over ten years ago, onboard the very first ship I sailed aboard as an engineer, I met my
first Rolls Royce technician. We worked together on emergent onboard and underway repairs to
a Controllable Reversible Pitch (CRP) system for over three weeks and I immediately recognized
the unmatched expertise and regard for safety and quality. Since that time, it was my goal to one
day work for this company and further understand what about this company makes it such a
leader of industry.
In the three months that I worked at Rolls Royce Marine I was able to work on everything from
massive bearing presses to
propeller contact inspections and
repairs, from lathe brake repairs
to safety walkthroughs, and from
simple single prop azimuth
propulsion thrusters to advanced
underwater mountable thrusters.
Each job advanced my
appreciation for the engineering
that goes into the Rolls Royce products. More importantly was the resources the company
utilizes to ensure that their products roll out the door with no less than the highest standard of
repair commensurate with the brand. In particular, I noted upon arrival that persons from several
countries and other states were teamed up. Despite the cultural differences and communication

lesser marine engineering
companies, Rolls Royce
successfully communicated
job status each morning,
paired senior with junior
personnel to ensure
continuous training, and
developed solutions for
critical path time requirements.
For anyone who has visited the Rolls Royce shop, it is instantly recognizable that their regard for
cleanliness ensures that safe practices and carried out and that no expense is wasted. Spare parts
and held thrusters are organized efficiently and inspected regularly. Each manager is integrated
into the shop floor on a regular basis and stop work authority was observed to be practiced at all
levels of employees.
In summary, I was not disappointed in my preconceived notion of what Rolls Royce marine
offered. Their staff is courteous, professional, and exemplifies the core values of the company
that has for over 180 years served the maritime industry. I very much look forward to any and all
future endeavors with this company and am grateful for their time and training offered to me.
