for two years.I enjoy spending time with
my teammates and I enjoy performing
in bands. My band that I play bass in
was able to play for an Arts Assembly at
school and it was really exciting because
the crowd loved it After a few years in concert band I don’t get
nervous anymore when performing on stage. Because of this I
can play to my full ability and have fun too.
The past two summers I have spent at camp in North Carolina
where I have focused on canoeing and kayaking the many rivers
and lakes; it is physically challenging but very fun and rewarding.
I always put schoolwork first because it is the most important
and, by focusing on one thing at a time, I can excel in each.
I admire my parents because they have both been very successful
in life and they encourage me to pursue my interests and goals
by helping me when I need them. Also, I admire my brother Brix
because he is always very positive and he gives me great feedback
on everything I do.
My name is Brix Brewster. I have lived in Lake Vista my whole
life, 11 years. My family is my dad, Brad Brewster, my mom
Xiomara Brewster and my older brother Tabor. I go to Isidore
Newman and I’m in 6th grade. After High School I will go to col-
lege and then I’ll take over my dad’s position at his company.
At school I’m in the robotics team and this fall I will play football.
Last year I was Chairman of the Keepers of the I-Lab. The I-lab is
the maker-space at school. I learned a lot about leadership by be-
ing the chairman. In fifth grade I was on a math team that placed
at a Math Olympics and I received several individual awards in
math. Outside of school I attended summer camp in Mississippi
and won the leadership award! I enjoy playing video games with
friends and I read lots of books for fun.
I admire my mom because she is a maker and a fashion designer
and my dad because he owns his business and inspires me to
work hard. I admire my brother Tabor because he is very suc-
cessful in school motivates me to do well.
My name isTabor Brewster and I have lived in LakeVista since I
was a baby. In my family are my brother Brix, my mom Xiomara
and my dad Brad. I go to Isidore Newman where I’m in tenth
grade. After high school I plan on going to college.
I play football and I’m also on the Honor Committee and in
multiple bands. This spring I will be the manager for the
baseball team. I have been on the Honor Roll every school
term since middle school. I participated in the citywide
spelling bee and was on a sixth grade math team that won
placement at the Country Day Math Olympiad. This year all my
classes will be Honors courses.
Outside of school I have been selected for the All-District El-
ementary Honor Band and the All-District Jazz Honor Band. I
started playing football last year because I needed a P.E. credit. I
have been playing trumpet since fourth grade and bass and drums

"When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s
your world for the moment." – Molly Garcia
This lovely garden of Crane Street is truly a sight to see. Molly
Garcia’s yard is a standout! In 2010 she decided to start from
scratch, regraded her yard, and, with the help of her sister Gloria
Moore and neighbors, she designed and implemented her garden
plan. Being careful not to lose the existing view of the park, she
chose low plants, such as dwarf pittosporum. Liriope, vinca and
dwarf loropetalum were planted to line the walkway from the
door to the park sidewalk.
Color was added with agapanthus, bougainvillea and orchids.
A potted olive tree was carefully placed. A tropical feeling was
created with queen palms and roebelenii (pygmy) palms and
finished off with colorful vinca. Garden art was the final touch for
a beautiful presentation! Why not pass by 66 Crane St. and take
a long look!
Thank you for sharing your stunning garden with The Vista!

When Barbara and I decided to get married, we
started looking for a house in Lake Vista. When we
couldn’t find anything that matched what we were
looking for, we made a decision to build and found the perfect lot
on Ani Street facing into Foliage Park. Working with our archi-
tect, George Hopkins, we designed a quaint, 2,600-square-foot
Cajun cottage elevated on pier and beam. George did an outstand-
ing job of incorporating the features we wanted within our living
space and of capturing the beauty of the park!
The open floor plan has been great for entertaining and family
living, but the porch and park views are clearly our favorite spot in
the house. Barbara chose finishes and furnishings that were "so-
phisticated casual” to create a warm and inviting environment.
Finally, we we were able to achieve exactly what we were looking
for while remaining super energy-efficient by using closed-cell
foam throughout and adding a cool metal roof, low E-glass win-
dows, LED lighting, Energy Star appliances and solar panels.
Thank you for sharing your home with The Vista!

Halloween TreaTsBy N2 Staff Writer, Elizabeth McCabe
alternative
Trick OrTreatWithoutThe Sweets
Why not try something different this year for the
trick-or-treaters who come to your door? Be the
house that gives out toothbrushes, Halloween
pencils, or tattoos. Set a trend this Halloween by
doing something different. The options are end-
less. Encourage safety by passing out light-up glow
sticks to help light the way in the dark. Or quench
children’s thirst with miniature bottled water or
even all natural juice boxes (which is always a hit
for the little ones). Even handing out mini bags
of microwave popcorn can be a fun alternative to
sugar-based treats.
Have A Healthy Halloween Party
Halloween doesn’t have to be chock-full of choco-
lates. Consider non-food treats at a Halloween
party. Encourage children to tap into their creative
sides with coloring tablets, markers, crayons, or
colored pencils. Even a simple set of watercolors
can cause a child’s imagination to soar. Or break
out the pocket-sized games, costume jewelry,
stickers, books, bubbles, or even bookmarks. Make
Mandarin orange pumpkins that children could
enjoy even after the party is over. Better yet, why
not promote physical activity by giving them toys
to get their bodies in motion. A plastic flier, a jump
rope, a beanbag, or even sidewalk chalk can help
kids to get up and move! Hold a dance party with
frightful music, or throw a costume parade. Pin a
heart on a scarecrow, go bobbing for apples, and
focus more on activities than on food to have a
healthy Halloween party.
Walk OffThose Calories (Don’tTrick And Drive!)
Don’t be tempted to trick and drive this Halloween.
An emerging trend of parents driving their kids
around the neighborhoods has become more popu-
lar in the past decade. But, is this the best for your
family’s health? Resist the urge to drive. Instead,
use that time to get outside, talk to your neighbors,
and walk off those calories. Boost your endorphins
in the process and get a calorie burn too. Set an ex-
ample for your children’s health by being in motion.
Enjoy Halloween this year with your little ones.
Don’t let this holiday be all about sugar highs and
sugar lows. Alternative Halloween treats do exist
for a happy, healthy Halloween!
Halloween can be a ticket to indulging in sugar, sweets
and empty calories of all sorts. After all, Halloween
only comes around once a year, so why not splurge in an
all-you-can-eat candy binge, right? Fortunately, healthy
alternatives for the little ones and parents alike do exist
for this popular holiday.

MONTHLY MINDFULNESS TIP:
How would you like to improve your memory, sharpen
your attention, and live longer? These are just a few of
the gained benefits from getting a good night's sleep.
Proper rest is crucial to one's overall well being, and
unfortunately, it's often ignored. One way to work on
getting adequate rest is by going to bed, and waking up,
at the same time every day. Getting your body on a set
schedule reinforces your body's sleep-wake cycles, and
will provide you with a better night's sleep.

DID SOMEONE SAY
“POODLE PARTY” IN
LAKE VISTA?
What began as a walk in the
park for Marjorie Simon and
her Goldendoodle, Koda, led to
a poodle party with all of his
friends! As one of the original
“Doodles” in Lake Vista, Koda
became part of the Simon
family 11 years ago. Now there
at least 17 poodles (that we
know about), either standard
or mixed breed in Lake Vista!
“When we got Koda, my boys
were only 5, 8, and 10, so ob-
viously they had a lot of time
to play with him. But now that
they are all grown and out of
the house, it was time for Koda
to make some new friends in

OODLES
of DOODLES - Oh My!
And that they did!
Koda wanted to invite his
diverse group of friends for an
impromptu “poodle party.” Since
he had a lot of friends, ranging in
age from 10 months to 11 years
old, Koda decide to make the
guest list into two groups. Here
is a glimpse at his guest list.
Raffa, a 22-month Goldendoo-
dle with her owner, Donna
Paternostro; Jet, a 1-year-old
Labradoodle mix with his
owner, Carli Gertler; Lucy, a
6-year-old Labradoodle, with
her owner, Nicole Romero; Fitz,
a 2-year-old tri-part poodle and
golden retriever, and Millie,
a 6-month-old Sherpadoodle
with their owner, Mary Fon-
tana; Lillybelle, a 10-month-old
Goldendoodle with her owner,
Priscilla Ferrara; and Lulu, an
8-year-old Goldendoodle with
her owner, Charlotte Leader.
Casey and her owner, Pam Or-
tiz; Beau, a Goldendoodle, and
his owner, Cheri Wolterman;
Daisy, an Australian Labra-
doodle, and her owner, Nicole
Ciaccio; Beau and his owner,
Rachel Van Voorhies; Duch-
ess, a Standard Poodle and her
owner, Joel Myer; Champ and
his owner, Kimberly McClure.
He knew that some friends
couldn’t make it, but he wanted
to still invite them. They are
Moose and his owner, Laura
Gros; Prince and his owner,
Lisa Plaia; and Sport, and his
owners, the Randol family.
Bailey and his owners, Chris
and Kathy Nieland, were sad
they could not make the party,
but they sent Koda a photo-
graph so that he would remem-
ber to invite him next time!
Koda told everyone to meet at
Duchess Myer’s house. Duch-
ess, a standard poodle, was a
gracious host, greeting every-
one at the door and gave them
a welcome doggie biscuit. After
introducing Millie, her Sherpa-
doodle friend (who knows her
cousins, the German Shepherd
family) to the Labradoodle fam-
ily and the Goldendoodles clan,
she explained a little of their
family history.
“I am a Standard Poodle, and
we have great ancestors,” she
said. “Not only are we the na-
tional dog of France, I remem-
ber stories of my great-grand-
parents working for the circus.
They used to dress them up
in human clothing to act out
tographs weren’t perfect, but the point is,
everyone had a great time! In fact, even the
humans said they loved the party and would
come again if anyone in Lake Vista wants to
host the next one (hint, hint).
Thanks to all who participated in the photo
shoot! The dogs were a fun subject, and it
was fun uniting our great Lake Vista neigh-
bors once again! If we missed you this time,
be sure to let us know if you have a story to
share with Precious Pets. All pet stories wel-
come, whether solo or in a group!

funny scenes because they were so smart. So, in addition to being
good-looking with our wonderful fluffy hair, our poodle family
comes from a rich heritage of athletes and hunters, and have
great water-retrieving skills.”
Millie went on to explain how her poodle family grew. “One side
of the poodle family started marrying Golden Retrievers, making
a full line of Goldendoodles, and then the Labrador Retrievers
married into the clan making baby Labradoodles. I love my Gol-
dendoodle cousins because they very smart. We have a lot of fun
playing because they are always upbeat and love people, espe-
cially children. We used to go on family trips with them and go
camping, hiking and swimming.”
“The Labradoodles are the loyal and sweet side of the family.
They love attention and affection! Sometimes I think they wear
themselves out running around just so they can curl up on the
sofa to rest after a long day of playing and get some snuggle time
with their owner. They hate to be bored, so when we hang out,
we bring plenty of toys!”
After introductions, Millie and Koda led everyone outside to play.
They had so much fun running and jumping around that they
decided to take some photographs. Because they had a hard time

Holidays
Be A Smart Shopper
Be a bargain hunter this holiday season! Keep an eye out for
items that periodically go on sale. The Sunday circular, or insider
deals through emails or Facebook can pay off for those who are
looking to save some cash. Splurging on a big ticket item? See if
the salesperson can throw in a deal – any discount or savings of
some sort. Knowing competitors’ prices (and using these as lever-
age) may be able to save you hundreds of dollars.
Take Advantage Of Holiday Deals And Steals
Don’t let the Doorbusters and Black Friday deals pass you by!
Substantial savings on popular items, such as electronics, may be
worth getting up early. Or take advantage of Cyber Monday deals.
Even sales the day after Christmas can be the perfect time to get
a head start on gifts and holiday items for next season!
Don’t Break The Bank
This holiday season, be sure to make a budget. Analyze last year’s
expenditures, which can often be done by reviewing credit card
statements, receipts, or last year’s budget. Consider how you plan
on spending money this year for the holidays (travel, entertain-
ing, gifts, etc.) to calculate this year’s budget. A specific limit per
person determined prior to the holiday season can prove advan-
tageous too. Don’t break the bank.
Holidays don’t have to be a time to run up the credit cards and
live beyond your means. Consider trimming your budget this
year by creating gifts with sentimental value: photos in hand-
made frames, holiday cookies, or just a heartfelt note of encour-
agement. Sometimes the best gifts come from the heart rather
than the pocketbook.
Get your finances in shape before the shopping season begins –
the holidays will be here before you know it!

have no concept of business and
profit. So fortunately I just have
a few artists and myself to put
up with. My gallery prides itself
on selling extremely high quality art for a very reasonable price.
I only use the highest quality materials when creating my art:
archival paper, lightfast inks, Japanese paints used with Russian
sable brushes. The outcome is vibrant, imaginative art that will
last more than a lifetime. I am preparing to do a show in Denver
at the Fascination Street Art Gallery, July 2-4. I will be there to
show new art and personally sign my prints. The art world is a
very rough and ugly business; it is like making hot dogs. You don’t

My wife and I moved into the neighborhood in July of 2002. I opened a
frame shop, Brilliant Inc., in the French Quarter by the St. Louis Cathedral
in 1991. In 1998 I opened Gallery Rinard on Royal street. I am currently
at 611 Royal street next to the Court of Two Sisters. I guess you could
call my style Pop Art. I have predominantly animal themed art. I am the
official artist for Barkus, the dog parade in the French Quarter. I have done
artwork for Cowboy Mouth, Budweiser, Southern Comfort, French Quarter
Festival. I have had one man shows in Las Vegas, Berlin, Los Angeles, New
Orleans, Denver, Miami, New York. Additionally, I have other artists in my
gallery, like James Dean who does the children’s books Pete the Cat.
My work is mostly gouache which is an opaque watercolor. Then
I reproduce the originals into limited edition prints using lithog-
raphy and serigraphy. I started my own business because nobody
would hire me. I have a degree from Florida State in graphic
design and a minor in art history. I later studied at the Academy
of Fine Arts on Magazine. I still attend classes there to just learn
a little bit more. I have watched so many galleries go out of busi-
ness because it is such a finicky profession. You have to deal with
artists who are usually brain dead, alcoholics, drug addicts or

a DIVErsion from Reality
home matters
By N2 Staff Writer, Megan Weatherly Lynn
With the holidays just around the corner and plenty of
parties to host, achieving the perfect ambiance in your
home is important. Lighting is one of the easiest ways
to create the mood and setting that you want. These
lighting design tips and trends will help you create a
fresh glow in your home for the holidays.
smart lighting
If you are considering a complete overhaul of your home’s light-
ing system, smart lighting may be a good option for you. New
technologies allow you to control the lighting in your home from
your smart phone or tablet. There are endless options available,
including the ability to set timers, dimmers and motion sensors,
as well as to use colored lighting for chromotherapy.
No matter the extent of your lighting design project, these light-
ing tips and trends will help you make the best lighting choices
for the upcoming holiday season.
Using Light To Create The Perfect Holiday Ambiance
d e s i g n & t r e n d slighting
zone lighting
Zone lighting allows you to illuminate certain spaces based on
specific activities or tasks. For example, have recessed lighting
installed, as well as decorative track or pendant lighting. This
way, you can illuminate your cooking spaces while preparing
meals. Then, dim those lights and use decorative fixtures to
illuminate your dining space and create a cozy ambiance while
eating and entertaining.
centerpiece lighting
Think of your centerpiece lighting as an opportunity to express
your personal style. Whether you have traditional or contempo-
rary taste, many decorative light fixtures are truly works of art.
In areas where you may want a focal piece, consider installing an
elegant chandelier or a sculptural, modern pendant.
finish options
As with just about any décor decision you make, there are end-
less options when it comes to selecting finishes for your light
fixtures. While chrome and steel remain classic choices, consider
making a bolder statement. Copper, brass and oil-rubbed bronze
offer a striking bit of color to any space.
industrial lighting
The modern farmhouse and industrial design trends suggest that
things do not need to be elaborate or “new” in order to make a
strong design impact. Deconstructed, industrial light fixtures
focus less on the design of the fixture and more on the light itself.
Filament bulbs, such as the Edison bulb, are made from sculpted
glass and filaments twisted into interesting loops and shapes.
