… but this story has not really been told …
• As a result, the Olympic Games, is mainly perceived, celebrated or
opposed as a global sports event and a multimillion commercial venture
• But what about the opportunities / provocations that may emerge out of
the many other culturally significant layers embedding the Games as
part of a international, historically relevant and arts inspiring
movement?

• I would like to propose the Cultural Olympiad, as the arts-led dimension
of the Games and the most intellectually stimulating opportunity for
Olympic narrative
• The Cultural Olympiad could provide the best platform to keep the
‘movement’ actually moving…
• But you need this story to be told
Discussion…
Development / growth – new buildings, new transport infrastructures, tourism attraction etc
Protest, scandal, controversy
(some, more commodified than others)Historical symbols – coubertin, torchEducational programmes – Olympia, scholars International diplomacy – Truce, olympic solidarityetc
Cinema - Olympia – lenny riefenstahlArquitectureDesign – mexico 68, cobiPublic art – Sydney 2000Sound?
PIC – lack of media platforms for the artistic contribution (as well as symbolic meanings of the Games)
