- Thanks for inviting us to talk to you tonight and the Library manager Barb Ewers extends her apologies for not being able to attend. As well as thanking you for your gift, we thought that giving you a bit of an oversight on the University and particularly what a modern academic library looks like might be of interest. I’ve worked for the University for just over 10 years and in that time there have been enormous changes and some of those are reflected in the statistics you can see here. In particular the growth in campuses has been a major undertaking in the last few years.
- The University is a major employer in this region
- The 3513 on campus students sounds like a lot, but they often aren’t all on campus at the same time. Many students will study in blocks or even do some form of block work experience. Nursing and teaching students for instance One of the benefits of having a regional university is that graduates of the various courses stay in the area, and currently according to the above statistics we have just over 2500 still in the region.
- Another recent development has been the merge of the Central Queensland branches of TAFE, and the University. Consequently Mackay now has 2 main campuses – Mackay City on the old TAFE site, and the Ooralea, that now incorporates the Trade Training Centre. The Mackay Whitsunday region also includes the Whitsunday study centre, at Proserpine
- The merge with Central Queensland TAFE came with some federal funding including 16.6 million dollars for a new Engineering building. Some of you may have attended the recent opening. As well as an up to date teaching facility it now means the whole Engineering degree here can be studied in Mackay, rather than students having to go to Rockhampton for their final year. There is also a mechatronics speciality that is only taught via the Mackay Campus. For those like me who are not sure what mechatronics is – this is the definition from Engineering Australia Mechatronic engineering is concerned with the design of automated machines. It is strongly based on a combination of mechanical, electronics and software engineering, but is a distinctly different to all three. Many mechatronic engineers work with the electronic instrumentation and computer control systems which nearly all machinery relies on for efficient and reliable operation
- As well as the $16.6 million for the Engineering building, the federal funding also included $10 million to re-furbish the TAFE including demolishing older buildings and updating others to add enhanced teaching rooms, such as the nursing labs. Although the merge with Central Queensland TAFE and the University affected other campuses including Rockhampton and Gladstone, Mackay is the first to fully amalgamate our students and their respective courses. The City campus in particular now has students studying, business, education and nursing from certificate courses right through to post graduate and research degrees. This has also meant changes to some of the traditional University courses. For instance previously Bachelor of Education students who would have previously had to complete all 3 years of their studies before getting their degree, can now gain an Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, after 1 – 2 years, and still continue on to get their Bachelor 1 or 2 years later.
- The addition of an extra campus in Mackay has also meant additional libraries. The University in Mackay now has 2 main libraries, at Ooralea and the City and also a small resource centre, at the Trade Training Centre, staffed 3 mornings a week.
- CQUniversity Library is a 24/7 library. You don’t have to be in the Library to use it. Most of the Library’s resources are available online. As long as you can connect to the internet or wifi, you can connect to CQUniversity Library. Note that while on campus, you should be able to access free wifi by connecting to eduroam which is the University’s wireless network. - With all these changes in recent years the CQUniversity Library has had to make changes. Some of the campuses are quite small and don’t yet have the staff or student populations to make a library feasible or economically viable. Apart from staffing costs,
