Being Social

You can’t be social if all you quote
                           are your own
                           press releases

@TAC_NISO Twitter Highlights
                              • So excited to present on #socialmedia for publishers today during @PSP_at_AAP preconference bit.ly/VR1NTB #psp2013

                              • Again, I’m pre-tweeting my presentation. Slides are here:  #psp2013

                              • #NISO = 1/3 Publishers, 1/3 Libraries, 1/3 automation suppliers. Communities converge to develop standards #psp2013

                              • “Markets are conversations” key takeaway from Cluetrain Manifesto by @DSearls http://amzn.to/XSutf3 #psp2013

                              • . @aaronsw life ended in tragedy, but he had a tremendous impact something we can learn from #psp2013

                              • Just one example is the #PDFTribute movement.  Publishers need to consider the impact and power of social engagement online. #psp2013

                              • Conversations are taking place all the time?  Are you listening? Are you engaging? Or is your head in the sand? #psp2013

                              • As you may have noticed, I do a lot online, on twitter, on linkedin, on wordpress #psp2013

                              • Something we should have all learned in English Comp 101: Change your writing style based on forum, Who may be listening #psp2013

                              • Writing for the Congressional Record is different from @WSJ, from a book, or peer-reviews jrl, or a blog post, or a comment, tweet #psp2013

                              • There is a spectrum of formality, exposure and risk for these different publications forms Don't consider them equally #PSP2013

                              • Being more formal or more widely distributed, doesn't imply more risk because of social media - Someone might tweet or RT this! #psp2013

                              • Don’t be ridiculous about trying to control the message on social media:You can't. #psp2013 #advice

                              • “If you can’t trust your employees to speak for your company on social media, you can’t trust your employees to talk.” #psp2013

                              • If you can't trust your employees, you've either hired the wrong people, or YOU have trust issues & should seek prof help. #psp2013

                              • Caveat opera (Employee Beware): USE COMMON SENSE, not just online, everywhere #psp2013

                              • Some social media advice: Engaging in the conversation is not easy, use your own voice, be forgiving, just relax. #psp2013

                              • More social media advice: It's a big world, you don't need to hear or respond to everything #psp2013

                              • The time to engage in the conversation is not after everything has blown up #psp2013

                              • Riffing on some good advice from @MichaelHyatt about how to use social media: http://bit.ly/UpqVDw #psp2013

                              • There is nothing more frightening for an author than that first blank page.  Don't be afraid, just jump in!  #psp2013

                              • Thank you everyone for a great day at #psp2013

(I don’t work for
                            a large corporation,
                               so I can say this)

Wednesday, January 30, 13
“If you can’t trust your employees
to speak for your company on social media,
you can’t trust your employees to talk.”

                             or a corporate report

People won’t listen to you
if you’re not saying things that
                                      THEY think
                                     are interesting
