2. Current use
• Sweden generally has good conditions for sea-based wind power
• Sea-based wind power – in production and may continue to increase
• Production of Swedish wind power facilities = 10 TWh 2013
• 0.55 TWh produced at sea-based facilities = constitutes only a small part
of Sweden's total wind power production
• Difficulties in achieving economic profitability are restricting expansion
projects at sea

• Currently five wind farms at sea in
Sweden, all located within the
territorial waters.
• Several other wind farms planned
that have permits, equivalent to a
theoretical annual production of
8.8 TWh
• Not yet constructed because of
fears of unprofitability

environment, but it depends on which protective measures are taken

Areas of national interests for
wind power at sea:
• 27 areas with a total area of
approximately 4,000 sq km
• Criteria: a wind speed of at
least 8 m/s, a connected
area of at least 15 sq km
and a sea depth of at most
35 metres

6. Future perspectives
• Future prospects for wind power at sea are good (need: research and
development, economic support / electrical certification system)
• Energy systems perspective – wider geographic distribution of electricity
production in Sweden with sea-based wind power
• Research and development address environmental effects of wind power,
adapting technology to different conditions
• Planning framework for wind power of 30 TWh by 2020, of which 10 TWh
at sea and 20 TWh on land

7. • Wave power – at a stage characterised by research and development, on
the way towards commercialization
• Floating wind turbines – technical developments in progress, but
technology is still young, difficult to predict commercial developments
