2. POLLUTION OF AIR
• An alteration in the composition of the atmosphere due to
addition of harmful substances like gases and other
particles is called AIR POLLUTION.

3. HOW AIR GETS POLLUTED?
• Air gets polluted largely due to the smoke
produced by automobiles, power plants and also
due to the large scale burning of fossil fuels such
as coal, diesel, petrol, kerosene, etc.

4. MAJOR AIR POLLUTANTS
 The major air pollutants are
Carbon monoxide
Carbon dioxide
Sulphur dioxide
Oxides of Nitrogen
Lead Particles

5. EFFECTS OF CARBON MONOXIDE
• When inhaled, carbon monoxide combines with
haemogoblin and reduces oxygen carrying
capacity and affects respiration.
• It also causes blurred vision, head ache,
unconsciousness and even death in extreme
cases.

6. EFFECTS OF CARBON DIOXIDE
• Increased amounts of carbon dioxide causes
GREEN HOUSE EFFECT which effects plant and
animal life.
• There is a possibility of melting of snow caps in
polar regions and an increase in the sea level.

7. EFFECTS OF SULPHUR DIOXIDE
• Plants are damaged by the high concentration of
sulphur dioxide.
• It affects the storage of limestone, marble, leather,
iron, steel, etc.
• Inhalation of high concentration of this gas leads to
severe bronchial problems.

8. EFFECTS OF OXIDES OF NITROGEN
• It causes bronchial irritation (Lungs Problem) and
damages the respiratory system.
• Higher concentration causes leaf damage and
impairs the photosynthetic activity in plants.

9. EFFECTS OF LEAD PARTICLES
• Plants and vegetables are damaged.
• In human beings , high level of lead particles can
cause brain damage and even death.

10. ACID RAIN
• When oxides of sulphur and nitrogen react with water
in the atmosphere, sulphuric acid and nitric acid are
produced, respectively.
• These come down to earth along with rain, which is
called ACID RAIN.

11. EFFECTS OF ACID RAIN
• In plants, it makes the
leaves yellow and brown
and accelerates the aging
process among leaves.
• It effects soil fertility, kills
aquatic life forms, and
causes respiratory and
skin diseases.
• It also damages
limestone and marble
monuments.

12. CONTROL OF AIR POLLUTION
 Following are some of the
methods adopted to control air
pollution.
• Certain devices are used to
eliminate particulate pollutants
emitted from the industries.
• In automobiles, use of efficient
engine, good quality fuel helps
to reduce the emission of
poisonous substances.

• The 1984 Bhopal gas disaster was caused
by the leakage of MIC gas from the union
Carbide Plant.
• It killed above 2000 people immediately
and injured up to six lakh people.
• Till today the contamination is present in
some form or another.
• It is been one of the worst cases of
industrial air pollution.
