Earth’s Landforms and Bodies of Water Ashleigh Bailey EDU 290 Photo Credit: Microsoft Clipart
Landforms Landforms – shapes of land created through forces of nature Continents Mountains Faults Volcanoes Where is a landform near you? Photo Credit: Microsoft Clipart
Plate Tectonics Plate Tectonics – a theory that states large, slow slabs(plates) under continents and oceans move to carry the land and ocean floor
Pangaea Many years ago all of Earth’s land formed one supercontinent called “Pangaea” Continental drift- plates moved which caused Pangaea to break up
Continents After many years, Pangaea broke up Today, we have 7 continents North America South America Europe Asia Africa Australia Antarctica What continents have you been to?
Plate Movement Plates colliding with one another create mountains A crack in the Earth where plates are moving create a fault One plate moving on top of another creates a volcano
Bodies of Water Most of Earth is water – 70% Bodies of Water can be big and small Streams and Rivers Lakes Oceans What is a body of water near you? Photo Credit: Microsoft Clipart
Streams and Rivers Streams flow over land in a channel They move from high ground to low ground Rivers are usually formed by small streams joining together The many small streams are called tributaries The more tributaries, the larger the river Tributaries and rivers together are called a river system
Lakes A Lake is a body of water surrounded by land A lake is formed when water fills a hole in the Earth’s surface North America has the most amount of lakes Some lakes are also called “seas” The Sea of Galilee Some lakes are human made Dams and reservoirs
Oceans Earth has one great body of water that is divided by the landinto four parts Pacific Ocean Atlantic Ocean Indian Ocean Arctic Ocean Under the water, the land has many features Valleys, plains, mountain ranges Photo Credit: Microsoft Clipart
Oceans Oceans move: Currents are streams of ocean water that move like large rivers Tidesare the rise and fall of ocean waters We see them as waves What ocean are you nearest to?
