Peer production & Television in Pecha Kucha style

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1.   Stelling Supporting or dismissing the following thesis: Peer production of content will structurally alter production processes in Television, and therefore BNN.
  2. BNN & social media This week we had to create a Pecha kucha presentation to either support or dismiss the position that we just introduced. Relevant to our case/question because ……..
  3. Algemene informatie TV and peer production What is peer production? And why is there a need for this peer production? The term was first introduced in Benkler's seminal paper Coase's Penguin. To describe a new model of economic production in which the creative energy of large numbers of people is coordinated. Often used interchangeably with the term social production . His 2006 book, The Wealth of Networks expands significantly on these ideas. "People participate in peer production communities for a wide range of intrinsic and self-interested reasons....basically, people who participate in peer production communities love it. They feel passionate about their particular area of expertise and revel in creating something new or better."
Members are first-hand connected with production companies, and fund their members directly. But not only. Companies indirectly support the infrastructure of cooperation of the commons on which they depend, sharing back the benefits with the open design communities. Benkler: It allows large scale cooperative information production efforts that were not possible before. From open-source software to search engines and encyclopedias, to massively multi-player online games.
  5.   Example TMF For example The Dutch music channel TMF. They integrate the viewers live in the program by asking questions on which they can respond directly. The y can make signs with their hands or write something on a piece of paper and then hold it in front of the camera. The viewers use their webcam and skype to communicate with this channel.
  6. Example TMF part two TMF is trying to interact with the crowd, especially young people because they believe it it what they want. An other example is the possibility to text your comments on a clip or on a question that has been posted. Young people can come in contact with each other because they often talk to people they don’t know.. BNN doesn't use this in their programs. But here is obviously a need for this because the initiative is a great success
The target group of BNN (15-35) really want s to became more active with social media. They will be interested in more power over the content of the television programs. It is very interesting for BNN to combine this aspect of power with their production to enrich their programs and become more in contact with their viewers.
By giving the people more power and involving them in the production process, BNN will show that they value the opinion of the viewers instead of just spreading information themselves. This connection is positive for BNN. There programs will be more adjusted to their target group and maybe lead to more viewers. !
  10. Skittles example This is a perfect example of what happens when you give the crowd too much power. And without enough supervision it could blow up in your face. It is to easy for people to take advantage of the possibility that they have been given.
  11.   What kind of possibilities are there to get the target group involved? It is the risk when you give the power to the people. But how can you make sure that it ends well?
  12.   Added value The added value is important. It is all about getting the people involved. You need to be conscious and serious when getting the people involved. But it is also important to take the disadvantages of peer production into account. The whole process should have an added value for the public or the co-producers. Also, BNN should make it their job to be serious about their target group. This way, the crowd will show that they want to contribute to adding value to the programs of BNN.
  13. Current TV A good example of how it can be effective: Current TV. Uitleggen en de mogelijkheden voor BNN aangeven: Current tv is a television channel that is completely produced with user generated content. It launched back in April 2005. But this isn’t user-generated content as we know it. Instead of providing a platform for the hundreds of thousands of “amateur” vloggers and video producers out there, Current sets the agenda: they decide what should be produced and what’s “good enough” to go to air. They even require a 3 month holding period while they decide whether your content is worthy of their esteemed channel. So, current tv makes sure that the crowd doesn’t take over by keeping the selective process on their side. The give the people what the want: the possibility to become active and contribute to making their own content but still keep the controll part in their own hands.
  14. Antwoord op de stelling (Structural change? No) Although peer production on TV turned out to be quite effective (example TMF), Not all programs will be structurally altered in this way. There are several conventions on this matter. Those conventions make it very difficult to completely and structurally alter the production processes of television. Not to mention: the term mass in mass media is plural. There are multiple organizations that make up the television environment. Benkler: difference: distribution true the internet is cheap. Television is much more expensive.
  15. Not to mention: is there a certain need to structurally altering production processes with peer production of content? Is that what the people want? Were are the possibilities when looking at the model of structure and agency? Structure  -------------------------------  Agency How do the technological abilities of the television affect it’s use? Acknowledging the tension between angency and structure in relation to production of content.
  16. So, peer production of content will not structurally alter the production process of television. TV is a tradition media en for that same reason it will be quite refreshing for some people in relation to all the new media forms. Older people, for example, will have less needs to interact with other people. Of course, tv will also be a moment of lay back and relax for some young people, a advantage that television still represents. Just simply watching television without actually becoming active yourselves. Structural change in the production of television programs will not happen in our opinion. BNN wants to be surprising, tough, humor and differently. But it is still very interesting for BNN. By giving more power to the people, BNN will give more value to those key words.
  17. Peer production will of course still alter the way in which television programs are made, but not all programs. Because how difficult will it be to make a program that includes thousands and thousands of opinions? We have thought of two possibilities in which BNN could use peer production to enrich her programs. But we have to take into account that just like all other innovations, it will require some time for the people to accept and adjust.
Benkler: ‘ the competitive threat from social production, however, is merely a surface phenomenon’ All that is nessesary is that we accept that peer producton in particular, and nonmarket information production and exchange in general, are sustainable in the networked information economy.
  19.   Conclusie samenvatten
  20. Dismissing van de stelling Although the use of peer production of content on television turned out to be quite effective (for example TMF). No all tv programs will be adjusted in this manner. There are certain conventions that keep existing. And we should ask the question if there is a need for this peer production of content in the television programs.
