It was great to meet with 30 parents on Wednesday morning for the Term 3 Headteacher’s
Coffee Morning. The purpose of the meeting was:
 to give parents an overview of our school’s vision, priorities and direction this term
and into the next academic year
 To give an overview of the new BIS HUB
 To allow parents a forum to comment upon present practice and also suggest further
ways to improve.
My thanks to everyone that attended in creating some stimulating discussion to develop
further thinking across a range of educational topics. If you were unable to attend, then

Look under the heading ‘Workshops’ to find ‘Headteacher’s Coffee Morning–20th May 2015’
As I mentioned in the letter sent to all parents on 17th April, our teachers have been working very hard to ar-
range the classes for the next academic year. When making these arrangements we consider a range of factors
which include a balance of gender, academic ability, nationality, behavioural needs, learning support needs,
children with EAL and social groupings. At BIS we have a reasonably transient community, which means that
we have to constantly monitor classes across each year group.
Next Friday 29th May, you will receive a DRAFT class list that places your child in a class for the next academ-
ic year. All of the above factors have been carefully considered when coming up with these groupings. If you
have any questions about these, please contact your child’s current class teacher by Thursday 4th June.
Finalised class lists will then be sent to all parents with your child’s End of Year Report on Friday 12th June.
At this time, a teacher and room number will have been allocated to each of the classes in readiness for the
next academic year. Time has been set aside in our calendar for all children to meet their new teacher at the
end of the term.
Please note that much time and effort has gone into this process and classes are subject to change
to due unexpected/late withdrawals.
Class Mixing - 2015-16
Quality learning experiences have continued to flourish across AP1 this week. It has been great to see our Year
3 children thoroughly enjoying their IPC topic on ‘Chocolate’. From tasting chocolate to learning about its ori-
gins and with all Year 3 students soon to be visiting a real chocolate factory in HCMC, learning has been very
sweet. Have a look at page 5 of this newsletter to find out more.
Our Year 5 children have been incredibly busy this week as they have been designing their own carnivorous
plants and also have had a trip over the bridge to AP2 to dissect a real heart! The pictures for both of these
learning experiences can be found on pages 6 and 7.
Please talk with your child about what they have learned this week. Try asking the following questions and see
what their responses are:
 ‘What questions did you ask the teacher today?’
 ‘What questions are you going to ask the teacher next week?’
 ‘What do you want to learn next week that you didn’t know how to do this week?’
I’d really like to hear what their responses were. Talking to your children about what they have learned is a
crucial part of the learning process. Set quality time aside for it this weekend.

Our Children’s Safety
Thank you all for your support in wearing your swipe card using the blue lanyard at all times when you are on
site - this really has improved their visibility. Please be reminded that if you do not have a valid swipe card
when you come to school, you will be asked to hand over photographic ID in order to obtain a visitors’ card.
In addition to this, I have recently noticed that many parents are parking their cars directly outside Gate A at
drop off and pick up times. To ensure the safety of our children, please pay attention to the points below:
 Never stop on or near to a pedestrian crossing
 No cars should be parked for long periods of time outside of school or on Pedestrian Crossings.
 Never U Turn along the stretch of road outside both AP1 and AP2
 Ask your driver to show respect to our guards and follow their instructions
 Explain to your driver that their actions reflect upon your family
Nepal Earthquake Appeal - Update
I am pleased to inform you that a total of 49,435,000VND, 220USD, 1,000MYR (Malaysian Ringgit) and 1BND
(Brunei Dollar) was successfully transferred to the British School Kathmandu (BSK) today. Thank you for all of
your support and generosity. I will be writing to Mr Moore, Principal of BSK today to confirm our donation
from AP1. Details of how the money will be used can be found on the BSK website.

CHQ - Family Login
Dear parents,
At the Headteacher’s coffee morning on Wednesday, one of the questions raised was how to access CHQ using
one password for all children in one family rather than two or more separate logins. Please see the steps be-
low which will allow you to set all your children to one login page. We hope this will prove useful and more
efficient for you in the future.

How to set up CHQ to log in using one password and landing page for all children in the same
family.
Login with one child (this will be the main login from now on)
Click My Profile tab
Expand My Other Profiles and click ‘add another profile’
Enter sibling’s User ID and password
Repeat process again for any additional children
Main login will be first child’s details but there will be an option to select any of the children after login
(see first screenshot)
To switch between children use the Select Profile at the top of the page (second screenshot)

Year 2 - Learning About 3D Shapes
Mr Graham’s class has been learning about 3D shapes this week. The best way to remember all of the tricky
words used to describe shapes is to make some models to label. You can see in the photos that we had a good
time, even if some of our work stuck to the tables!

Year 3 - Chocolate Stories
Year 3 have been learning all about yummy chocolate this term. We have even tasted some different types and
decided what our favourite type is! We have also compared the flavours to other types of food. The journey of
chocolate has transported us back through time to the days of the bloodthirsty Aztecs. Here, we have learnt about
their way of life and there traditions and beliefs. Some of us have even staged our own authentic sacrifice!
Gruesome! We have discovered the origins of chocolate, how it was traditionally eaten and the history of how it
arrived in Europe. We will be studying Cacao pods, planting some beans and we will soon get the chance to see a
real life chocolate factory in action! It has been a fantastically exciting topic so far and it will continue to be as we
start to discover how chocolate is made and how it is transported all over the world.
We have also been working very hard
on creating adventure stories.

Year 5 - Creative Carnivorous Pants
Year 5 have had some creative homework activities this year and our latest was no exception. The children are
studying plant life cycles in Science and were asked to investigate carnivorous plants and then create their own
carnivorous plant. The children created some amazing plants with features and special adaptations to enable
them to catch bugs or animals. Here are a few of these, though all children should be commended for their ef-
forts.

Year 5 - Dissection at AP2
This week Year 5 visited the Science Department at AP2 to dissect hearts as part of their IPC and Science top-
ic. The children had the opportunity to open up a heart and identify the different chambers and blood vessels.
Hands on experiences are a really valuable part of learning and this was no exception. The children returned
with a much better understanding about how the blood moves through the heart. Year 5 would like to thank
Mr York-Smith for organising this, and his wonderful team who gave up their time to work with our children.

Fundinotots - BIS Baby and Toddler Group
What is it?
Fundinotots is a friendly place to meet other parents with young children. We provide an informal play envi-
ronment with opportunities to take part in a range of activities such as painting, soft play, sand pit, water play,
storytelling, large play apparatus, library time and music sessions. Refreshments are provided at each session
for parents and children.
Who can go?
Fundinotots is open to all children aged 0 to approximately 36 months. Parents must be present at all times
during the session. Please note that Fundinotots is only open to children accompanied by parents or other fami-
ly members, not nannies.
When and where?
Fundinotot sessions run on Monday 8:00 -10:00 a.m., Tuesday 8:00-11:00am, Wednesday 8:00 -11:00 a.m. and
Thursday 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. Fundinotots meet in the Early Learning Centre.
How do I enrol my child?
For more information about joining Fundinotots for the rest term or for the next school year 2015-2016 please

Girls Netball Match v TX
On Wednesday 13th May, the U11 netball team
played their third match this season against BIS
(TX). Both teams played superbly.
There were some amazing goals in the match, 5 by
Ella Walsh and 1 each by Gemma Handscombe,
Lulu Evans and Emily Marshall.
It was a really tough match and our team played
really well thanks to the amazing coaching of by Ms
Rachael.
It all ended with a narrow win to AP1 with a final
score of 8-7.

U11 HCMC Football Tournament - Champions!
On Wednesday 20th, the whole of the U11 boys football team went to play a football competition at SSIS. It was
a really hot day and everyone had to leave school at 9:30am to get on a bus to go out to District 7. Our first
match was at 11:00am against SSIS A which was a really tough match. At halftime the score was 1-1 but in the
last second we managed to slip another goal in, making the score 2-1. Then after winning our first game we
went to face another school. All of us were fired up like a gun because of our early victory. We managed to win
that match 7-0, making us the top of the leader board. We had one more match to go. If we won this match we
were going straight through to the finals. We managed to score an amazing amount of goals winning 10-1.
When the time came for the finals, our opponents were ISHCMC. After ten minutes of excellent playing from
both teams it was half time. Both teams were eager to score and after some good movement and passing a free
kick was given to BIS. Ben G was chosen to take the free kick behind the half way line. After lining himself up
in the right position to take the shot, the referee gave the signal to shoot. Contact was made with the ball and
everyone thought it was going out because it was so far away but it actually hit the crossbar and then in! Even
though we were all excited because we had scored the first goal, the game was not over. Finally, the whistle
was blown, BIS had WON! CHAMPIONS!

PE Department - BIS Aquathlon 2015
On Saturday 13th June AP1 will host its 8th annual Aquathlon. It will take the same format as last year
with a combined AP1 & TX event at the An Phu Primary Campus.
An Aquathlon is a fun and fast-growing sport that combines both running and swimming.
The swimming will take place in the An Phu Primary pool and the run will take place on the big field. The race
briefing will take place at 6.45am and the first race will begin at 7.00am.
Boys and girls will set off at different times (in most cases) and will not race against each other. The distances
for each age group are:
You will require a swimming costume, goggles, a hat if you wish, towel and suitable clothes/trainers to run in
(including a t-shirt which must be worn during the run!). A small snack and refreshment is also recom-
mended for after the event. Food will be available to purchase on the day.
In addition, there will be a parent’s race taking place at AP2 at approximately 8.00am on Saturday 6th June;
Parents can enter as an individual or as part of a team with one running and the other swimming. If you would
like to take part please complete the reply ‘for parents’ and either send directly to Phil Drake at AP2 or you
can hand this into the AP1 PE office and we will pass it on.

  • 2. From The Headteacher - Mr Simon Higham Issue 32/Page 2 It was great to meet with 30 parents on Wednesday morning for the Term 3 Headteacher’s Coffee Morning. The purpose of the meeting was:  to give parents an overview of our school’s vision, priorities and direction this term and into the next academic year  To give an overview of the new BIS HUB  To allow parents a forum to comment upon present practice and also suggest further ways to improve. My thanks to everyone that attended in creating some stimulating discussion to develop further thinking across a range of educational topics. If you were unable to attend, then please click here to access the full presentation from our BIS HUB: Look under the heading ‘Workshops’ to find ‘Headteacher’s Coffee Morning–20th May 2015’ As I mentioned in the letter sent to all parents on 17th April, our teachers have been working very hard to ar- range the classes for the next academic year. When making these arrangements we consider a range of factors which include a balance of gender, academic ability, nationality, behavioural needs, learning support needs, children with EAL and social groupings. At BIS we have a reasonably transient community, which means that we have to constantly monitor classes across each year group. Next Friday 29th May, you will receive a DRAFT class list that places your child in a class for the next academ- ic year. All of the above factors have been carefully considered when coming up with these groupings. If you have any questions about these, please contact your child’s current class teacher by Thursday 4th June. Finalised class lists will then be sent to all parents with your child’s End of Year Report on Friday 12th June. At this time, a teacher and room number will have been allocated to each of the classes in readiness for the next academic year. Time has been set aside in our calendar for all children to meet their new teacher at the end of the term. Please note that much time and effort has gone into this process and classes are subject to change to due unexpected/late withdrawals. Class Mixing - 2015-16 Quality learning experiences have continued to flourish across AP1 this week. It has been great to see our Year 3 children thoroughly enjoying their IPC topic on ‘Chocolate’. From tasting chocolate to learning about its ori- gins and with all Year 3 students soon to be visiting a real chocolate factory in HCMC, learning has been very sweet. Have a look at page 5 of this newsletter to find out more. Our Year 5 children have been incredibly busy this week as they have been designing their own carnivorous plants and also have had a trip over the bridge to AP2 to dissect a real heart! The pictures for both of these learning experiences can be found on pages 6 and 7. Please talk with your child about what they have learned this week. Try asking the following questions and see what their responses are:  ‘What questions did you ask the teacher today?’  ‘What questions are you going to ask the teacher next week?’  ‘What do you want to learn next week that you didn’t know how to do this week?’ I’d really like to hear what their responses were. Talking to your children about what they have learned is a crucial part of the learning process. Set quality time aside for it this weekend. ‘Those who know, do. Those that understand, teach’. Aristotle Our Children’s Safety Thank you all for your support in wearing your swipe card using the blue lanyard at all times when you are on site - this really has improved their visibility. Please be reminded that if you do not have a valid swipe card when you come to school, you will be asked to hand over photographic ID in order to obtain a visitors’ card. In addition to this, I have recently noticed that many parents are parking their cars directly outside Gate A at drop off and pick up times. To ensure the safety of our children, please pay attention to the points below:  Never stop on or near to a pedestrian crossing  No cars should be parked for long periods of time outside of school or on Pedestrian Crossings.  Never U Turn along the stretch of road outside both AP1 and AP2  Ask your driver to show respect to our guards and follow their instructions  Explain to your driver that their actions reflect upon your family Nepal Earthquake Appeal - Update I am pleased to inform you that a total of 49,435,000VND, 220USD, 1,000MYR (Malaysian Ringgit) and 1BND (Brunei Dollar) was successfully transferred to the British School Kathmandu (BSK) today. Thank you for all of your support and generosity. I will be writing to Mr Moore, Principal of BSK today to confirm our donation from AP1. Details of how the money will be used can be found on the BSK website. Have a great weekend.

Issue 32/Page 3 CHQ - Family Login Dear parents, At the Headteacher’s coffee morning on Wednesday, one of the questions raised was how to access CHQ using one password for all children in one family rather than two or more separate logins. Please see the steps be- low which will allow you to set all your children to one login page. We hope this will prove useful and more efficient for you in the future. Deirdre Grimshaw Deputy Headteacher. How to set up CHQ to log in using one password and landing page for all children in the same family. Login with one child (this will be the main login from now on) Click My Profile tab Expand My Other Profiles and click ‘add another profile’ Enter sibling’s User ID and password Repeat process again for any additional children Main login will be first child’s details but there will be an option to select any of the children after login (see first screenshot) To switch between children use the Select Profile at the top of the page (second screenshot)
  • 4. Issue 32/Page 4 Year 2 - Learning About 3D Shapes Mr Graham’s class has been learning about 3D shapes this week. The best way to remember all of the tricky words used to describe shapes is to make some models to label. You can see in the photos that we had a good time, even if some of our work stuck to the tables! Mr Graham Tait Year 2 Teacher
  • 5. Issue 32/Page 5 Year 3 - Chocolate Stories Year 3 have been learning all about yummy chocolate this term. We have even tasted some different types and decided what our favourite type is! We have also compared the flavours to other types of food. The journey of chocolate has transported us back through time to the days of the bloodthirsty Aztecs. Here, we have learnt about their way of life and there traditions and beliefs. Some of us have even staged our own authentic sacrifice! Gruesome! We have discovered the origins of chocolate, how it was traditionally eaten and the history of how it arrived in Europe. We will be studying Cacao pods, planting some beans and we will soon get the chance to see a real life chocolate factory in action! It has been a fantastically exciting topic so far and it will continue to be as we start to discover how chocolate is made and how it is transported all over the world. We have also been working very hard on creating adventure stories.
  • 6. Issue 32/Page 6 Year 5 - Creative Carnivorous Pants Year 5 have had some creative homework activities this year and our latest was no exception. The children are studying plant life cycles in Science and were asked to investigate carnivorous plants and then create their own carnivorous plant. The children created some amazing plants with features and special adaptations to enable them to catch bugs or animals.   • 7. Issue 32/Page 7 Year 5 - Dissection at AP2 This week Year 5 visited the Science Department at AP2 to dissect hearts as part of their IPC and Science top- ic. The children had the opportunity to open up a heart and identify the different chambers and blood vessels. Hands on experiences are a really valuable part of learning and this was no exception. The children returned with a much better understanding about how the blood moves through the heart. Year 5 would like to thank Mr York-Smith for organising this, and his wonderful team who gave up their time to work with our children.   • 8. Issue 32/Page 8 Fundinotots - BIS Baby and Toddler Group What is it? Fundinotots is a friendly place to meet other parents with young children. We provide an informal play envi- ronment with opportunities to take part in a range of activities such as painting, soft play, sand pit, water play, storytelling, large play apparatus, library time and music sessions. Refreshments are provided at each session for parents and children. Who can go? Fundinotots is open to all children aged 0 to approximately 36 months. Parents must be present at all times during the session. Please note that Fundinotots is only open to children accompanied by parents or other fami- ly members, not nannies. When and where? Fundinotot sessions run on Monday 8:00 -10:00 a.m., Tuesday 8:00-11:00am, Wednesday 8:00 -11:00 a.m. and Thursday 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. Fundinotots meet in the Early Learning Centre. How do I enrol my child?   • 9. Issue 32/Page 9 Girls Netball Match v TX On Wednesday 13th May, the U11 netball team played their third match this season against BIS (TX). Both teams played superbly. There were some amazing goals in the match, 5 by Ella Walsh and 1 each by Gemma Handscombe, Lulu Evans and Emily Marshall. It was a really tough match and our team played really well thanks to the amazing coaching of by Ms Rachael. It all ended with a narrow win to AP1 with a final score of 8-7. Thanks to all players who took part well done! Lulu Evans 6S Student U11 HCMC Football Tournament - Champions! On Wednesday 20th, the whole of the U11 boys football team went to play a football competition at SSIS. It was a really hot day and everyone had to leave school at 9:30am to get on a bus to go out to District 7. Our first match was at 11:00am against SSIS A which was a really tough match. At halftime the score was 1-1 but in the last second we managed to slip another goal in, making the score 2-1. Then after winning our first game we went to face another school. All of us were fired up like a gun because of our early victory. We managed to win that match 7-0, making us the top of the leader board. We had one more match to go. If we won this match we were going straight through to the finals. We managed to score an amazing amount of goals winning 10-1. When the time came for the finals, our opponents were ISHCMC. After ten minutes of excellent playing from both teams it was half time. Both teams were eager to score and after some good movement and passing a free kick was given to BIS. Ben G was chosen to take the free kick behind the half way line. After lining himself up in the right position to take the shot, the referee gave the signal to shoot. Contact was made with the ball and everyone thought it was going out because it was so far away but it actually hit the crossbar and then in! Even though we were all excited because we had scored the first goal, the game was not over. Finally, the whistle was blown, BIS had WON! CHAMPIONS!   • 10. Issue 32/Page 10 PE Department - BIS Aquathlon 2015 On Saturday 13th June AP1 will host its 8th annual Aquathlon. It will take the same format as last year with a combined AP1 & TX event at the An Phu Primary Campus. An Aquathlon is a fun and fast-growing sport that combines both running and swimming. The swimming will take place in the An Phu Primary pool and the run will take place on the big field. The race briefing will take place at 6.45am and the first race will begin at 7.00am. Boys and girls will set off at different times (in most cases) and will not race against each other. The distances for each age group are: You will require a swimming costume, goggles, a hat if you wish, towel and suitable clothes/trainers to run in (including a t-shirt which must be worn during the run!). A small snack and refreshment is also recom- mended for after the event. Food will be available to purchase on the day. In addition, there will be a parent’s race taking place at AP2 at approximately 8.00am on Saturday 6th June; Parents can enter as an individual or as part of a team with one running and the other swimming. If you would like to take part please complete the reply ‘for parents’ and either send directly to Phil Drake at AP2 or you can hand this into the AP1 PE office and we will pass it on.
