As I have mentioned in my previous newsletters, the safety of our children at BIS is of up-
most importance to us and I would like to thank all parents for their support with our im-
provements to the Standard Operating Procedures at all gates this week. In addition to
this, thank you all for wearing your swipe cards around your neck, in order to increase
their visibility across the campus. If you still require a blue lanyard, then please ask at the
Main Office. I fully understand that change is, at times, a challenge to us all. However,
these small changes will help to further safeguard our children - something that all of us
cannot ignore.
Please note that if you do not have a valid swipe card or forget to bring this to school, you
will be required to hand over photographic ID to obtain a visitors’ badge.
Last weekend was a very busy one for all of the children that represented the BIS swim team at the ISHCMC
Invitational Swim Meet. It was great to see so many personal best times improved and team relay successes
over the course of the two days. My thanks to all parents that spent a great deal of time on the side lines, en-
couraging our students and supporting our school. More details regarding individual results, together with a
selection of pictures can be found on page 4.
As I write this article, there has been yet another high magnitude earthquake in the Nepal region, thus rein-
forcing the need for us to do everything that we can as a community to help. During last week’s whole school
assembly, I launched the Nepal Earthquake Appeal with the children and this week, there has been a great
response to this. Thank you to all parents and children that have contributed to this cause as we have managed
to raise over 40 million VND this week. All funds will be sent directly to The British School, Kathmandu (BSK),
who will ensure that every penny is channelled directly to those in need. To access the BSK website to follow
the progress of the appeal, please click here.
Following on from the successful Y6 to Y7 transition day last week, I was pleased to welcome our F3 children
into our Friday assembly last week for the very first time - this is in preparation for their transition to Y1 next
year. All F3 classes will be joining Y1 to Y6 every Friday afternoon to celebrate the many successes that take
place across BIS over the week.
On Thursday morning, it was lovely to meet up with a selection of new and existing parents at our welcome
back PTG coffee morning. If you were unable to attend and would like to find out more about how you can help
out with our many PTG events, both this academic year and next, please refer to page 8 of today’s newsletter
for more details.
Next week, very early on Wednesday morning, our Primary FOBISIA teams leave school to attend the Primary
FOBISIA games that are being held at BIS Jakarta. I am sure that you will all share with me in wishing each
team the very best of luck as they compete in the swimming, athletics, football and T Ball events. I am very
much looking forward to hearing about all of the experiences when they return to school on Monday 25th May.
Go for it!
Finally, I would like to personally invite all parents to the final Headteacher’s Coffee morning of this academic
year. The meeting will take place on Wednesday 20th May at 8.15am in the Multi Purpose Room. The
focus for this meeting will be ‘Communication - an introduction to the new BIS HUB’, led by Ms Claire Dur-
rant, who is our Online Marketing Officer. During this meeting, there will also be a short presentation by my-
self on the current developments at AP1 and an opportunity for questions to both myself and Ms Dee about
school wide topics. I look forward to meeting with you then.
I hope that you enjoy looking through this week’s newsletter. Have a great weekend.

F3 - Growing Plants
In F3 we have been investigating growing plants. The children have planted lots of different seeds and have
been learning about what they need to grow. The children have been amazed to see that their tiny seeds have
grown into plants. They have learned that different seeds will grow into different plants and flowers.

PE Department - International Swim Meet
On Saturday and Sunday May 9th & 10th, it was great to see over 305 swimmers taking part in The ISHCMC
Invitational 2015. There were swimmers from 10 other International Schools from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi
and Cambodia. All students from BIS AP1, BIS AP2, BIS TX, SSIS, AIS, ISHCMC, Unis, Nisc, Ican, ISP and
EIS HCMC contributed to the success of the event and also achieved many personal bests. There was a fantas-
tic feeling throughout the meet and the day ran smoothly.
It was exciting to see the most effective team trophy awarded to BIS, along with several individual trophies
which are listed below.

PE Department - BIS Aquathlon 2015
On Saturday 13th June AP1 will host its 8th annual Aquathlon. It will take the same format as last year
with a combined AP1 & TX event at the An Phu Primary Campus.
An Aquathlon is a fun and fast-growing sport that combines both running and swimming.
The swimming will take place in the An Phu Primary pool and the run will take place on the big field. The race
briefing will take place at 6.45am and the first race will begin at 7.00am.
Boys and girls will set off at different times (in most cases) and will not race against each other. The distances
for each age group are:
You will require a swimming costume, goggles, a hat if you wish, towel and suitable clothes/trainers to run in
(including a t-shirt which must be worn during the run!). A small snack and refreshment is also recom-
mended for after the event. Food will be available to purchase on the day.
In addition, there will be a parent’s race taking place at AP2 at approximately 8.00am on Saturday 6th June;
Parents can enter as an individual or as part of a team with one running and the other swimming. If you would
like to take part please complete the reply ‘for parents’ and either send directly to Phil Drake at AP2 or you
can hand this into the AP1 PE office and we will pass it on.
Mr Chris Pemble
AP1 PE Leader
6. Recently, a group of BIS students from TX, AP1 and AP2 met up with Ms. Hong Nhung, the famous Vietnam-
ese singer, to discuss the issue of the illegal trading of rhino horn in Vietnam. Ms. Hong Nhung is playing an
important role as a ‘rhino ambassador’ in the Vietnamese national public awareness campaign aimed at stop-
ping this trade in order to protect this critically endangered species from becoming extinct.
She was so impressed as BIS students explained their initiatives, including collecting hundreds of signatures
pledging not to be involved in this activity, placing collection boxes around District 2 and producing posters and
stickers reminding people about the plight of the rhinos. The students in turn were fascinated to hear first-
hand about Ms. Hong Nhung’s trip to South Africa where she witnessed the heart breaking scene of a dead rhi-
no whose blood was still dripping from the hole where poachers had hacked off its horn. The Q&A session that
followed sparked some interesting discussion, with BIS students asking intelligent questions as well as voicing
their opinions in an extremely mature and caring way.
Also present was a BIS parent, Dr. Mary Chambers, who is the Director of Training and Public Engagement
with Science at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit. She has also been involved in a number of initia-
tives to raise awareness, and kindly donated t-shirts to all participants with the ‘Rhino Rangers’ logo.
While this is a complicated and urgent issue, BIS students believe in the old adage ‘do not despise small begin-
nings’ knowing that their contribution will have a positive influence in ensuring that the world’s wildlife is pro-
tected for generations to come.
