2. REPRESENTATION OF ROCK MAGAZINES
The magazine here is represented to be
aggressive and rebellious this is
because we associate aggression and
rebellion with rock music and people
which listen to rock music. Kerrang
design their magazines in this way to
appeal to the target audience. There
are many ways in which the magazine
show this representation:
3. ⢠The main image on the front cover is a large picture of a male rock artist. He seen to be
dominate because the image is so large and takes up most of the room of the page, given
that he is also male this helps show him as dominant because males are seen to be more
aggressive than females.
⢠He is dressed in black, black connotes death therefore this portrays the man as violent.
⢠Rock music is associated with white ethnicity this is shown on the front cover as all the
people on the magazine are white. Furthermore the man is also shown to be 20s this helps us
regard him a rock star.
⢠A mid-shot is used so the picture can capture his serious facial expression and his violent
body language.
⢠He is portrayed to be violent because of the way he is shown to be punching his hand. This
shows both men and rock stars to be aggressive.
⢠We also see quotes of the man saying â I could be your worst nightmareâ once again this
helps represent him as an violent man.
4. ⢠These other pictures on the front cover again helps us associate rock
stars with young, white males however, this time we see them with
more unusual hairstyles and black makeup. These hairstyles help
portray rock stars as people who donât care and the black as violent
people because black connotes death.
⢠We again get the impression that these people donât care because they
arenât looking at camera, this portrays them as cool and rebellious.
⢠They are also again portrayed as violent because we associate pale skin
and black hair with vampires.
⢠A mid-shot is used again to capture facial expressions and body
language, in the picture with the guy playing the instrument we see
more aggressive body language which represents rock music as loud
and aggressive.
5. ⢠In the front cover we also see a really unconventional cover story involving
marriage. We see the colour red used as it connotes love and a pretty
female with a white dress and blonde hair which connotes marriage and
purity. This picture represents females as pure and kind which is the
complete opposite of which the men were portrayed
⢠However, the picture is designed to deceive and draw the attention of the
reader and fans of Paramore. This is because usually Paramore is an female
singer with lots of black makeup, very colourful hair and in every picture of
her she is wearing black. She is usually the opposite of what we stereotype
a female as so when we see her in such a sterotypical way, on a swing,
saying âgetting married is what I wantâ fans of her are almost forced in the
buying the magazine because they want to see what's happened to the girl
they idolised.
6. CONTENTS PAGE
⢠The picture here shows kerrang
readers young and rebellious. This is
shown as the main image is off three
youngsters partying and taking shots.
⢠We see this social group all to have
long hair, wear makeup and all be
young and white. Suggesting that
these are the qualities we associate
with rock artists.
7. DOUBLE SPREAD PAGE
⢠In this picture we see a band of 4 males. These men are shown to
be cool and stylish because none of them are looking at the camera
and all are wearing trendy clothes.
⢠Once again they fall under the stereotype that rock stars should
have long hair. In addition every male artist we have seen all has
black hair suggesting that this is the norm.
⢠Every shot apart from one is a mid-shot. The mid-shot is used so
we can clearly see the seriousness in their facial expressions. Also
due to the mid-shot we see that they are working on their music.
Therefore, thanks to the mid-shot we see that this band take their
work very seriously. The one close is used to show the lead singer
screaming which conveys the genre of rock.
⢠Finally once again they are all white and young, we can again make
the judgement that they are violent because they are all male, one
of them seems to be screaming and none of them a smiling or
appear to be happy.
