4. GRAMMAR STRUCTURE (Comparatives and Superlatives)
As we have seen, adjectives describe nouns qualities. Some of these qualities may
vary in the degree or intensity. As in Spanish, when we make comparisons contrasted
qualities or attributes using adjectives in their various degrees.
Grades of Adjectives
Adjectives that can vary in the degree or intensity have comparative and superlative
forms. In the next section, there are rules on how to form these comparative and
superlative forms.
Positive Rating
The positive degree of adjectives is the quality at the simplest level.
Examples: fast, hard, smart, pretty, clean, large, small, old, easy...
The comparative degree
In making comparisons, we highlight the superiority, inferiority or equality of quality
either. The structure of each of these different degrees of comparison.
Comparative of superiority. Superiority comparisons, the adjective, the comparative
form is, is followed by "than".
5. Examples:
Juan is faster than Mark. (Juan corre más rápido que Mark.)
Angela's room is cleaner than Sue's. (La habitación de Angela está
más limpia que la de Sue.)
I am taller than Beth. (Soy más alto que Beth.)
New York is bigger than Los Angeles. (Nueva York es más grande que
Los Angeles.)
6. The superlative degree
The superlative quality denotes the highest grade and as in Spanish, uses "the" before
the adjective in the superlative form
Examples:
Juan is the fastest. (Juan es el más rápido.)
Angela'a room is the cleanest. (La habitación de Angela es la más limpia.)
I am the tallest. (Soy el más alto.)
New York is the biggest city in the United States. (Nueva York es la ciudad más grande
de los Estados Unidos.)
Note: If the adjective is possessive, do not use "the". Also do not use "the" when
comparing something with himself.
Examples:
His smartest student is Lisa. (Su estudiante más lista es Lisa.)
New York is coldest in January. (Nueva York es más frío en enero.)
7. Comparative inferiority
To form this type of comparison we use the conjunctions "not as ... as" or "less ... than". In
both cases, the word is in the positive level.
Examples:
Mark is not as fast as Juan. (Mark no corre tan rápido como Juan.)
Sue's room is less clean than Angela's. (La habitación de Sue no es tan limpia como la de
Angela.)
Beth is not as tall as me. (Beth no es tan alta como yo.)
Los Angeles is not as big as New York. (Los Angeles no es tan grande como Nueva York.)
Comparative of equality
With the adjective in the positive degree, we use the conjunction "as ... as" to make
equality comparisons.
Examples:
Mark is as fast as Juan. (Mark corre tan rápido como Juan.)
Sue's room is as clean as Angela's. (La habitación de Sue es tan limpia como la de
Angela.)
Los Angeles is as big as New York. (Los Angeles es tan grande como Nueva York.)
Note: We can customize a comparison with a quantifier (much, a lot, a little ...).
8. FORM
There are some rules to form the comparative and superlative

Superlative

(funnier)
Replace “y”
(funniest)
by
“iest”
5. For adjectives of two or more
syllables:

or superlative form.

13. READING (SUPERLATIVE)
Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan was the best know basketball player of his time. His career started in
the early 1980’s, when he played college basketball with the University of North
Carolina. Although he was not the tallest or the strongest player, he won the
attention of his coach for being an excellent athlete. Probably his most important
achievement at that time was scoring the winning basket in the 1983- 1984
championship game.
Jordan left college early to join the professional basketball team, the Chicago Bulls.
He led the Bulls to the best record in professional basketball history. He was voted
the most valuable player five times. Jordan holds several records: the highest
scoring average and the most points in a playoff game.
14. READING (COMPARATIVE)
A big decision
Alice Jones works in St. Louis, Missouri, as a sales representative for a big
publishing company. She has a job offer from a smaller publishing
company in New York City to become the marketing director for college
textbooks. She can´t decide if she should take the job or not.
In a smaller company, there may be more chances for advancement and
promotion because more people get to know you. Her company mow is
so big that she doesn’t know anyone outside of her department. But the
company in New York doesn’t pay as well as the company in St. Louis.
They are offering her $2,000 less than her present salary. But the new job
title, marketing director, is more impressive than her current job title as
sales representative. A marketing job is probably more interesting that
her sales job. It also involves a lot more responsibility.
The move from St. Louis to New York is also a big change. New York is an
exciting place to live, but it is expensive and dangerous, especially for a
single woman. However, it really is the center of the publishing industry,
so it seems like a better city to work in than St. Louis.
