- ORCID is an open, non-profit, non-proprietary, interdisciplinary, independent, community driven organization that is supported by organizational memberships. The ORCID organization was established by several organizations across the scholarly communication industry who were all independently trying to tackle this challenge of name ambiguity to address the name ambiguity issue. Founded in 2010, and the service started in 2012.
- This infographic shows at a high level how, by integrating ORCID iDs into systems in all researcher workflows, we can together enable interoperability between different systems, helping us make our mantra of ‘Enter once, re-use often’ a reality for researchers and their organizations.
- ORCID is encouraging our members to build integrations that provide the best possible support for your researchers, your organization, and the wider research community. For publishers, this means: Collecting validated ORCID iDs for individuals to ensure that they are correctly connected with their contributions, such as dissertations, publications, artworks, or review activities Displaying iDs in metadata and with publications to signal to grantees the value of using ORCID iDs Connecting these ORCID-workID assertions to authors’ ORCID records, making it easy for researchers to share this trusted information with other systems and profiles they use Synchronizing with your own systems to save your users time and improve information flow with other systems
- The researcher first connects their ORCID iD at submission, in this case to a journal. The researcher signs into their ORCID account and authorizes the connection (Many researchers first encounter ORCID at submission.)
- When Crossref mints a DOI for a work with an authenticated ORCID iD embedded in it, they send the work to ORCID. ORCID notifies the ORCID record holder that Crossref would like permission to add it to their record…
- And if the researcher grants permission, it is added to their ORCID record with the Source listed as Crossref. Researchers can grant Crossref permission to continue to update their ORCID record with any subsequent work with an embedded ORCID iD – for approximately 20 years, or until the researcher revokes the token. They can of course use the Crossref Metadata Search to link the work to their ORCID record by going to search.crossref.org or orcid.org/my-orcid Source: orcid.org/0000-0002-2133-7900
- Researchers need to proactively enable auto-update in their personal DataCite profile in order to benefit from ORCID auto-update. Go to https://profiles.datacite.org to start the process
- Then when DataCite mints a DOI for a work with an authenticated ORCID iD embedded in it, and they already have permission to update that researcher’s ORCID record, they send the work to ORCID. As with Crossref, researchers can use DataCite search to to link the work to their ORCID record by going to search.datacite.org or orcid.org/my-orcid Source: orcid.org/0000-0002-4808-0391 (top) orcid.org/0000-0002-6036-0903
- When research works are added to the ORCID record using auto-update, other systems which have subscribed to receive updates about that researcher’s work can benefit from learning about the new work.
