LEED Performance Report
BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE
OFFICE OF THE CITY ARCHITECT
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The following Performance Reports were created in accordance with Council Resolution 20071129-045. The
City of Austin is a recognized international leader in sustainable building practices in which municipal building
strive to conserve energy, water, and other natural resources while promoting human health and safety. The
holistic approach to architecture creates high-quality and enduring structures that enhance the economic
value and reduce the lifecycle costs of a building.
Design and construction of buildings are driven by the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC)
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines and promote these goals. The following
reports provide information about municipal buildings, highlight LEED credentials, and promote sustainable
building achievements.

The George Washington Carver Museum, located in and owned by the City of Austin, Texas, is a cultural facility operated by
the City's Parks and Recreation Department. It has the distinction of being the first African-American neighborhood
museum in Texas. The museum is currently housed in a historic 1,720 sf building that was originally Austin's first main
public library.
By the 1970s, the library had outgrown the building, and a larger adjacent facility was completed in 1980. The historic
library was converted into the George Washington Carver Museum and has continued to serve the Austin community.
Since that time, it has collected and preserved artifacts that document the history of African Americans on city, county,
state, and national levels and promoted a climate in which African American artists are recognized and appreciated for
their culturally diverse heritage. In 1998 Austin voters passed a bond package to expand the Carver Museum and Carver
Branch Library.
The new Museum & Cultural Center has a multitude of functions including a 134 seat theatre with dressing rooms and
associated support areas, a dance studio/theatre rehearsal room, 4 exhibit galleries and a children's gallery with exhibit
preparation and archive storage space, a classroom with adjacent storage and darkroom functions, conference/meeting
room, as well as a lobby, catering kitchen, store, and administrative office space associated with the public spaces.
Emissions and cost are reduced by decreasing
energy use through improved design. Emissions
are further eliminated by contracting 100% of
the building’s energy to a renewable source.
