Generally speaking, I write computer software that enables solving different problems. At first my work delves into research that exposes the heart of the problem, then I build software that enables the solution, and finally I generalize the software to be applicable to many users or problem categories. Often the cycle looks like: hacking (quick and dirty) -> theoretical solution (something that works for me) -> implementation (public site/app) -> refactoring (integrating feedback and code cleanup) -> generalization (toolkit) -> documentation (book, thesis).
