2. Pulp capping
ï” Pulp capping is a process of placing a specialized agent in
contact with or in close proximity to the pulp with the
intention of encourage the formation of new
dentine(secondary dentine) and promote the healing of the
pulp.
3. Criteria of pulp capping
ï” The pulp should be healthy and uninfected
ï” The area of the exposure not more than o.5 mm
5. Base
ï” Base is the material which applied over the pulpal axial wall and act as
a substitute for lost dentine. The thickness of the base depends upon the
amount of dentine lost. The total bulk(dentine+base) should be at least
2.omm
6. Zinc phosohate cement
ï” use:
1.permanemt cement for indirect restorations including inlays,
onlays , crowns and bridges
2.orthodontic cement
3.high strength base
7. Poly carboxylate cement
ï” Use:
1.used as a permanent cement for cast restoration, stainless
steal crowns and orthodontics band
2.use as a non irritating base under both composite and
amalgam restoration
3.used as intermediate restoration
8. Liner
ï” The term liner used for those materials which can be applied to a cavity
surface in a relatively thin film . The thickness of the liners usually does
not exceed 0.1mm.
ï” All the material use as bases can be used as liner
9. Calcium hydroxide
advantage
ï” Antibacterial protection
ï” Pulp protection
ï” The tissue dissolving property
ï” Newer property show improved
strength essentially no solubility in
acid
disadvantage
ï” Pulp obliteration
ï” Internal resorption
ï” Lack of adhesion on hard tissue
ï” Micro leakage
11. GI cement
ï” Use:
1.used as a restorative material and as a dentin liner.
2.calcium glass ionomers release fluoride, have the ability to bond
and strengthen
12. Zinc oxide eugenol
ï” Use :
1.pulp capping agent
2.for temporary filling
3.for temporary and permanent restoration
4.secondary use â root canal restoration
13. Varnish
ï” For shallow cavities , cavity varnish can be applied on the walls
especially in silver amalgam and cast gold restoration. however
in composite and glass ionomers the application of cavity
varnish is avoided.
ï” Function :
1.prevent micro leakage
2.reduce post operative sensitivity
3.it does not act as a insulator
14. Recent pulp capping material
ï” MTA: mineral trioxide aggregate
ï” Hydroxyapatite
ï” Collagen
ï” Poly carboxylate cement
ï” Biodentine
15. MTA â Mineral trioxide aggregate
Advantage
ï” Antimicrobial activity
ï” Prevent micro leakage over vital
pulp
ï” Non toxic
ï” Dental bridge formation
Disadvantage
ï” Long setting time
ï” More difficult to manipulate
17. BIODENTINE
ï” USE :
âąEndodontic indications ( apexification , root-end filling)
âąPermanent dentine substitute and temporary enamel substitute
âąRestoration of deep or large crown carious lesions
âąDirect pulp capping in adults presenting healthy pulp
