5. 3. Image Influences
Fashion
Sports clothes are often
worn as a fashion item;
popularity of sports can
change with trends or as
it gets more media
coverage.
Media
Sport uses the media to hit
a large audience. The
type of T.V. access you
have effects the sports
you are able to watch
e.g. satellite, cable or
terrestrial. Media
ranges from TV.,
internet, radio and
press.
6. 4. Influential People
Family
Chances of participation increase with
encouragement, access, tradition, family
club memberships, positive experiences
with family members & financial backing.
Peers
If your peers take part that may influence you
to join in, starting an activity with a friend is
easier because it can give confidence and
be more fun.
Role Models
There are many role models in sport, Dame
Kelly Holmes being an example of a sports
ambassador. Media coverage, success,
behaviour, skill, personality and lifestyle
can all contribute to them being a role
model.
7. 5.Resource Influences
Are resources available?
The physical activity you take part in will be dependent on
whether the facilities you need are in your area/town.
Funding for new facilities is dependent on many factors
including funding, expected use and demand for the
facility.
Do you have Access?
In areas where facilities are good, there is a greater chance
that people will participate. With more people involved,
there is better possibility of a higher standard which
therefore attracts more players and coaches. In a
smaller town, the interest may be there, but if there are
not people to use a new facility it will not be built; if there
are know transport links to a facility the opportunity to
play may also be lost.
8. Resource Influences
Where are the resources located?
Certain activities lend themselves to certain
environments. Outdoor pursuit centres can be
placed I areas where there are hills, lakes, forest
etc.. which are needed for those activities. However,
if the demand is high, artificial facilities can be
created e.g. The Castle Climbing Centre in London.
How much time do you have?
Depending on the type of job you have; you may have
blocks off time to participate I activities like
mountaineering, or several short periods within a
week which may lend itself to being member of a
gym or leisure club.
9. 6. Socio – economic Influences
Socio – economic
Status
Surveys suggest that people
who are classed as large
employers & higher
management tend to
participate in more physical
activity. Certain activities are
also more popular in certain
sectors.
Cost
For instance; rock climbing
requires a lot of technical
equipment, training, transport,
club fees whereas running
just needs a decent pair of
trainers.

FAMILY – Can be a positive influence if your family is interested in sport as they provide good role models for you or can encourage you. It can also be a negative influence if they are not interested in sport at all.
FRIENDS – we tend to do what our friends do. If they are interested in a certain sport we tend to be involved in it too. If they drop out it may affect us. Peer pressure can be very strong and can affect your decisions greatly.
SOCIAL CLASS – This will be dependent on several things, employment, income level, & family background. It is a fact that fewer people from working class backgrounds take part in sport than other classes as they don’t have as much time, money or opportunity to take part.
FINANCE – Sport at nearly every level costs money. The higher your level becomes the more it costs.
ENVIRONMENT – Where we live will be a factor in what we do. If we live near the sea water sports would be obvious things to do, just as living in the country would enable to have more opportunity to do horse riding or rock climbing.
SCHOOL INFLUENCE – P.E at school enables us to gain skills & improve our health. It enables us to develop good attitudes to sport & health. It also allows us to gain qualifications in PE as well.
Our day is made up of several aspects – work to make a living, domestic duties like washing up or taking the dog for a walk, bodily needs like sleeping , eating & washing. What is left is our leisure time. We can do whatever we choose to do to relax. Most of us do something we enjoy as it helps de-stress us whether it be in a calming way through yoga or watching TV or by releasing energy to get rid of aggression. It benefits our health by helping out physical, mental & social well being as not all leisure activities are energetic. There are many social benefits we gain by interacting with others & many leisure activities involve meeting or co-operating with others. It is not very often when you get to do your leisure activity as a job. In the case of many professional sports people this would be the case.
STEREOTYPES – This is a fixed image we have of how things should be or what they should look like. For instance girls should cook, be clean and play with dolls. This is an old fashioned image of how girls be. Boys have more opportunity than girls, some sports are unsuitable for girls, married women look after the house, sport is not a high priority for women, male sport dominates TV & papers but in contrast a lot of girls drop out of PE at school as they don’t think it’s important. Some people think that women taking part in sport will make them unattractive to men.
PERFORMER – Playing at a high level at your sport.
WORKING WITH PERFORMERS – PE teacher, Coach, trainer, Manager, Instructor
SCIENCE & HEALTH – Sports doctor, physiotherapist, sports psychologist, dietician, sport & exercise advisor.
ORGANISATION – centre manager, leisure officer, administrator, sports development officer.
MEDIA – Journalist, commentator, TV presenter.
BUSINESS – Manufacture, retail, sales, agent.
PRACTICAL WORK – Grounds man, mechanic, stable hand, match official.
