This document discusses opportunities and challenges for electric vehicle car sharing through ReachNow LLC. Key points include:
- ReachNow offers on-demand car sharing of electric and gas BMW and Mini vehicles by the minute or hour using a mobile app. The fleet includes various BMW and Mini models including fully electric i3 vehicles.
- Infrastructure challenges for electric vehicles include a lack of widespread fast charging stations, but the network is growing in Portland.
- Benefits of electric vehicle car sharing include promoting electric vehicle adoption, providing long-term exposure to the technologies, and acting as a gateway to higher market penetration over time. However, higher purchase/operating costs and range limitations present challenges.

12. Electric Vehicles.
DriveNow entered the U.S. market in
San Francisco in June of 2012 with 70
all-electric BMW Active E cars and
installed approx. 50 L2 chargers to
support them.
In May 2014 DriveNow added 80 cars
to its fleet and opened up street parking
through a shared-data “pilot”.
DriveNow replaced Active E cars with
70 BMW i3 Rex cars in August of 2015.
In October, 2015 DriveNow suspended
service because regulatory framework
conditions with SFMTA were not in
place.
