3. WHO DOES IT INCLUDE?
The cover features popular British star Daniel
Radcliffe, best known for his 11 year run as leading
role ‘Harry Potter’ across eight films based on the
novels by J.K. Rowling.
His celebrity status gives him an instantly
recognizable presence center frame of the layout.
The focus on his face shows he’s the lead of the film
and it’s his role that makes the film so important.
The way he has been shot shows a ghost like
atmosphere, using a grey background that blends in
with the smudged style of photography.
Having the three faces gives a tripping quality that
works well for the ‘spooky’ feel of the film. His pale
face and blue eyes give a grey effect like the
background to show him as a ghost blending into
the environment and being hard to detect like the
Woman in Black. I really like the way this has been
done and I think I will try and recreate a similar
style for my own magazine, trailer and/or poster.
4. WHAT ARE THE TAG LINES USED?
The tagline ‘BACK IN BLACK’ has lots of
connotations, but having the bold white font
against his black shirt really stands out. The
capitals show us the title is related to him,
playing on the title of his recent film release – this
could show the audience it’s targeting, as witty
city workers or Londoners, from the magazine
and it’s style of wording.
The word ‘Exclusive’ in red really projects the
importance of his new film and that this feature
can’t be found in other publications. It speaks
directly to it’s demographic of young people
wanting the latest scoop and gossip in a fast pace
city.
The tagline is catchy and easy to remember
without giving lots away but the simple
alliteration gives a sort of rhyme that makes the
film title stick in the readers head.
5. DOES IT FOLLOW A CONSISTENT
THEME?
The magazine’s theme is consistent in how the
use of colour and font is used. The simple design
is very minimal to relate to it’s London based
audience, keeping it modern and unisex without
too much hint to a male target demographic.
I like the grey tones against the black
and white, I think it really relates to the genre of
the film it’s publicizing, the connotations of grey
being creepy and ghost like which fits with the
supernatural theme of the The Woman in Black.
The red is another perfect colour choice, the links
well to the semiotics of blood and danger which
are found in horror films. It stands out against the
rest of the colour shades and neutral tones to
show importance and dominance over certain
text. The minimal layout works with the red and
shows the magazine’s style well.
6. MY OVERALL VIEW
I really like this magazine cover for the supernatural horror sub
genre, I will probably try something similar with my own magazine,
but probably a darker background to make the use of shadow and
light more severe and contrast to the background. I like how the
star’s face was shot to highlight the theme and genre of the film and
how it visually was appealing. I’m not sure if my skills will allow me
to create something to this effect but I find it inspiring for my own
project.
