Marangu Route
A day before climbing, you receive climb orientation and check your climbing tools.
Affectionately known as the Coca-Cola Route, this is by far the most popular route to the
summit of Kilimanjaro. It is possible to do the Marangu route in 5 days, thereby getting to
the summit one day earlier than the Machame route.
The Marangu route does, however, offer you the option of spending an extra
acclimatization day on the mountain. This day extends the route to a 6-days, significantly
increasing your chances of success.
Hut accommodation on the Marangu route offers you the relative luxury of being able to
sleep in huts along the entire route. Mineral water, soft drinks, chocolates and beers are
sold at all the camps on this route. All your equipment and supplies are portered, and a cook
prepares all your meals. For the 5-day route, exclude the additional acclimatization day at
Horombo hut (day three on the itinerary below).
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1980m) - Mandara hut (2700m)
Hiking time: 5 hours | Distance: About 12 km | Habitat: Montane Forest | Food: B,-,D
3
The drive from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate, takes about 50 minutes. The
journey passes through the village of Marangu, which is located on the lower slopes of the
mountain. Once you reach the park gate, all hikers are requested to sign in at the Park office
and make their final preparations for the climb.
Porters will be seen arranging and loading their packs containing the food, water, cooking
gas, and most of your equipment. Make sure that you have all your daypack items (including
at least drinking water, your lunch pack and extra clothing) with you as the porters ascend
quicker than the hikers.
Our guides will be available to assist with any additional
information or needs you might have. You now leave the
Park gate and ascend on a cleared ridge trail through the
rainforest. The forest suffused with mist and dripping with
beards of moss is also where most of
Kilimanjaro'sKilimanjaro's animals are found. (An
alternative and scenic parallel forest trail branches off to
the left a few minutes after the gate.
This trail follows the edge of a stream through the
undergrowth and offers you the option to rejoin the main
track after 1½ hours of hiking or 1 hour before Mandara
hut.)
Your first night stop, Mandara hut, is a group of wooden A-framed huts in a forest clearing.
Each cabin features 6-8 sleeping bunks with solar generated lighting. The total capacity of
the camp is 80 climbers. Water is piped into the camp from springs above, and there are
flush toilets behind the main hut.
Day 2: Mandara hut (2700m) - Horombo hut (3720m)
Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 15 km | Habitat: Moorland | Food: B,L,D
From Mandara hut, the trail passes through a short stretch of the forest, skirts the base of
the Maundi Crater and then emerges into the transition from rainforest to moorland. It is
well worth a short detour to scramble up the rim of the Maundi Crater for your first awe-
inspiring view of the Kibo Crater. Kibo will glimmer in the distance on a clear day, showing
off her majestic glaciers in the morning sun.
Once you are in the open moorland, you will get the chance to see some of
Kilimanjaro'sKilimanjaro's most spectacular plants - the endemic giant lobelia, which grows
up to 3 m in height and the giant groundsel (Senecia Kilimanjaro), which can reach heights
of 6m! After about 6 hours from here, you get to the Horombo hut, where you will have hot
washing water, rest, an evening meal and overnight.
Day 3: Horombo hut (3720m) - Acclimatization day
**Not part of the 5 Day Climb** | Food: B,L,D
4
Horombo hut is a village of huts perched on a small plateau, with buildings similar to
Mandara, but with a total capacity of 160 climbers! Usually bustling with hikers, guides,
porters, and with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. You will meet both
ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and night at Horombo are for
additional acclimatization.
To hike towards the Mawenzi-Saddle, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way (about 3 hours up
and 1.5 hours down). This hike will further assist with the process of acclimatization.
Remember to drink enough water and move slowly! All meals for the day are provided at
the hut. Retire to bed early and get a last good night of rest.
Day 4: Horombo hut (3720m) - Kibo hut (4700m)
Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 15 km | Habitat: Alpine desert | Food: B,L,D
After breakfast, you now continue your ascent into the Alpine desert habitat. From
Horombo, there are two trails to the "Saddle" (which refers to the area between Mawenzi
and Kibo's peaks). There is an upper route (right-hand fork) and a lower (left-hand fork). The
upper route (right hand fork) will be very familiar, as you will have climbed most of it the
previous day towards Mawenzi hut. It is very stony and eroded.
The recommended lower route (left-hand fork) is much easier and takes nearly an hour, and
it also passes the last watering point at 4130m. You will have to fill your water bottles with
all the water you need until your return to Horombo hut in two nights' time (unless you are
willing to buy Mineral water at Kibo hut).
Once again, remember to slow down and drink enough water!! Situated in the barren Alpine
desert is Horombo hut, a stone build blockhouse with bunk beds for 60 climbers but no
streams with water nearby. It is, however, possible to buy mineral water and soft drinks at
the camp office.
There are platform toilets behind the hut. The summit is now a different 1195m up, and you
will make your final ascent the same night. Prepare your equipment, ski stick and thermal
clothing for your summit bid.
5
Replace your headlamp and camera batteries, and make sure you have a spare set available
as well. To avoid your drinking water freezing, put it in a thermal flask. Finally, go to bed at
around 18h00 to 19h00 and get as much sleep as possible.
Day 5: SUMMIT ATTEMPT
Kibo hut (4700m) Uhuru Peak (5895m) Horombo hut (3720m)
Hiking time: 7 to 8 hours to Uhuru-Peak - 4 hours to descend to Horombo | Distance: 6 km
ascent – 9 km descent | Habitat: Stone and ice-capped summit | B,L,D
You will rise around midnight, and after some tea and biscuits, you shuffle off into the night,
where the going gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans
Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to
Gillman'sGillman's point (5 681m), located on the crater rim.
This section is steep with many stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort.
Probably the most demanding section of the entire route. Do the Kili shuffle and move
slowly.
From Gillman'sGillman's Point, you will typically encounter snow up to Uhuru peak (5895m),
the highest point in Africa. Total exhilaration and satisfaction - you made it!
Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will take photographs
before the 3-hour descent back to Kibo hut. After a short rest, you gather all the gear you
left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours) for your overnight. The
return to Horombo hut will seem surprisingly fast compared to the ascent. The total time
spent walking on this day is around 14 hours, so be prepared for a very tough day.
Later in the evening, you enjoy your last dinner (with soft drinks and beer for sale at the
camp office) on the mountain and a well-earned sleep filled with memories and stirring
emotions.
Day 6: Horombo hut (3720m) - Marangu Gate (1980m)
Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours | Distance: About 18 km | B,-,D
After breakfast, you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara hut down to the
Marangu gate. In a register, you sign your name and details at Marangu gate, and successful
climbers receive their summit certificates.
Those climbers who reached Gillman'sGillman's Point (5685m) are issued a green certificate,
and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m), receive gold certificates. Drive back to Moshi.
Machame Route
A day before the climb, you receive climb orientation and check your climbing tools.
Day 1: Machame Gate (1490m) to Machame camp (2980m)
Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 18 km | Habitat: Mountain forest | B,-,D
6
Your day starts early with a briefing, breakfast, and a 45-minute drive from Moshi (910m) to
the Machame village (1490m). The guides and porters prepare and pack the supplies and
your equipment in the village. You will receive a lunch pack, and you can also buy mineral
water in the village. Depending on the condition of the road, it is possible to drive from the
village to the Machame gate, but if not, the muddy 3 km walk will take about 1 hour to
complete.
You start your ascent after registering at the gate
office. You immediately enter the rainforest.
There is a strong possibility of rain in the woods,
transforming the trail into a soggy, muddy and
slippery experience. You will have a welcome
lunch stop about halfway and reach the
Machame camping area in the late afternoon.
Day 2: Machame camp (2980m) Shira camp (3840m)
Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 9 km | Habitat: Moorland | B,L,D
You rise early at Machame camp, and after breakfast, you climb an hour or so to the top of
the forest and then for 2 hours at a gentler gradient through the moorland zone. After a
short lunch and rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira
Plateau. By now, you will be able to see in an easterly direction the Western Breach with its
stunning glaciers. You are now due west of Kibo, and after a short hike, you will reach the
Shira campsite at 3 840m. The porters will boil drinking and wash water before serving
dinner. The night at this exposed camp will even be colder than the previous night, with
temperatures dropping below freezing.
Day 3: Shira (3840m), Lava Tower (4630m), Barranco camp (3950m)
Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 15 km Habitat: Semi-desert | B,L,D
The route now turns east into a semi-desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower,
where you reach an altitude of 4630m after about a 5 hours walk. Lunch is served in a
designated area before ascending the rocky scree path to Lava Tower (4630m).
This day is definitely, the most challenging day so far. Around this point, some climbers will
start to feel breathlessness, irritability, and headaches for the first time. After lunch, you
descend by almost 680m to the Barranco camping area. After reaching the high altitude of
4600m at Lava Tower, the true acclimatization benefit of this day becomes clear.
This descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers excellent opportunities to
take beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in
a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a
memorable sunset while you wait to prepare your dinner.
7
Day 4: Barranco camp (3950m) Barafu camp (4550m)
Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 13 km | Habitat: Alpine desert | B,L,D
After spending a night at the Great Barranco Wall (a very imposing sight at first), you make
your way up this excellent looking obstacle, which in the end, usually turns out more
accessible than what you anticipated. Finally, topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you
now appreciate how beautiful Kilimanjaro is.
The route then heads down through the Karanga
Valley over intervening ridges and valleys and joins
the Mweka route. Turn left up the ridge, and after
another hour or so, you reach Barafu Hut.
The last water stop is the Karranga Valley, as there
is no water at Barafu camp. Barafu is the Swahili
word for "ice", and it is a bleak and inhospitable
camping area to spend the night. Exposed to the
ever-present gales, the tents are pitched on a narrow, stony, and dangerous ridge. Ensure
that you familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid accidents.
The summit is now a different 1345m up, and you will make the final ascent the same night.
Prepare your equipment, ski stick and thermal clothing for your summit attempt. This
should include the replacement of your headlamp and camera batteries, and make sure you
have a spare set available.
It will be wise to carry your water in a thermal flask to prevent freezing. Finally, go to bed at
around 19h00 and get some precious rest and sleep.
Day 5: SUMMIT ATTEMPT
Barafu camp (4550m) Uhuru Peak (5895m) Mweka (3100m) Hiking time: 8 hours to reach
Uhuru Peak | 7/8 hours to descend to Mweka | Distance: About 7 km ascent – 23 km
descent | Habitat: Stone and ice-capped summit | B,L,D
You will rise around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits, you shuffle off into the night.
You will head northwesterly and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the
crater rim. This 6-hour walk to Stella point is, for many climbers, mentally and physically the
most challenging on the route. At Stella Point (5685m), you will stop for a short rest and be
rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting).
From Stella Point, you will typically encounter snow on your 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak.
8
The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop
here for too long, as it will be challenging to start again due to the cold and
Fatigue. Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life.
The walk back to Barafu from the summit takes about 3 hours. Here you will have a well-
earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear before heading down to Mweka hut
(3100m). The route is not challenging and will take you down the rock and scree path into
the moorland and eventually into the forest. The camp is situated in the upper forest, and
mist or rain can be expected late afternoon. Dinner and washing water will be prepared.
Day 6: Mweka camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)
Hiking time: 3 hours | Distance: About 15 km | Habitat: Forest | B,-,D
After an early and well-deserved breakfast, it is a short 3-hour scenic hike back to the Park
gate. At Mweka Gate, you sign your name and details in a register where successful climbers
receive their summit certificates.
Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5685m) are issued green certificates, and those
who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. From the Mweka Gate, you will
continue down back to Moshi town!

If paying is by cash (either USD or TSH), the payment must be made to the Art in Tanzania Booking Officer on the booking date. As booked and paid for can be cancelled and refunded six weeks before the climb. By booking this climb with Art in Tanzania, you accept the above conditions. Please ensure that you are in Moshi the day before your climb to receive the orientation. Make sure you bring a copy of your passport and visa. Meal plan as detailed: B=Breakfast, L=Lunch and D=Dinner All Park entrance fees to include government taxes Service of an English-speaking professional Mountain guide on the mountain, porters and skilled cook Treated water on the trek
  • 7. 2 Excluded: Laundry, sleeping bags, personal drinks and climbing gears. Medical evacuation (included in the Kilimanjaro National Park fees, and they perform it). Items of a personal nature and other extras. Tipping. The Porter's Union demands a USD 150 tip paid and shared by the climbing team. Your climbing bag should include: • Sleeping bag • Mt Boots • Anorak, • Warm jackets • Balaclava (Ski Mask) • Sweater • Warm Trouser • Raincoat/trouser • Gloves • Walking sticks • Pair of socks • Water Bottle • A pair of light shoes • Scarf • Backpack • Headache pills • Flashlight with spare Marangu Route A day before climbing, you receive climb orientation and check your climbing tools. Affectionately known as the Coca-Cola Route, this is by far the most popular route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. It is possible to do the Marangu route in 5 days, thereby getting to the summit one day earlier than the Machame route. The Marangu route does, however, offer you the option of spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain. This day extends the route to a 6-days, significantly increasing your chances of success. Hut accommodation on the Marangu route offers you the relative luxury of being able to sleep in huts along the entire route. Mineral water, soft drinks, chocolates and beers are sold at all the camps on this route. All your equipment and supplies are portered, and a cook prepares all your meals. For the 5-day route, exclude the additional acclimatization day at Horombo hut (day three on the itinerary below). Day 1: Marangu Gate (1980m) - Mandara hut (2700m) Hiking time: 5 hours | Distance: About 12 km | Habitat: Montane Forest | Food: B,-,D
  • 8. 3 The drive from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate, takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Marangu, which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. Once you reach the park gate, all hikers are requested to sign in at the Park office and make their final preparations for the climb. Porters will be seen arranging and loading their packs containing the food, water, cooking gas, and most of your equipment. Make sure that you have all your daypack items (including at least drinking water, your lunch pack and extra clothing) with you as the porters ascend quicker than the hikers. Our guides will be available to assist with any additional information or needs you might have. You now leave the Park gate and ascend on a cleared ridge trail through the rainforest. The forest suffused with mist and dripping with beards of moss is also where most of Kilimanjaro'sKilimanjaro's animals are found. (An alternative and scenic parallel forest trail branches off to the left a few minutes after the gate. This trail follows the edge of a stream through the undergrowth and offers you the option to rejoin the main track after 1½ hours of hiking or 1 hour before Mandara hut.) Your first night stop, Mandara hut, is a group of wooden A-framed huts in a forest clearing. Each cabin features 6-8 sleeping bunks with solar generated lighting. The total capacity of the camp is 80 climbers. Water is piped into the camp from springs above, and there are flush toilets behind the main hut. Day 2: Mandara hut (2700m) - Horombo hut (3720m) Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 15 km | Habitat: Moorland | Food: B,L,D From Mandara hut, the trail passes through a short stretch of the forest, skirts the base of the Maundi Crater and then emerges into the transition from rainforest to moorland. It is well worth a short detour to scramble up the rim of the Maundi Crater for your first awe- inspiring view of the Kibo Crater. Kibo will glimmer in the distance on a clear day, showing off her majestic glaciers in the morning sun. Once you are in the open moorland, you will get the chance to see some of Kilimanjaro'sKilimanjaro's most spectacular plants - the endemic giant lobelia, which grows up to 3 m in height and the giant groundsel (Senecia Kilimanjaro), which can reach heights of 6m! After about 6 hours from here, you get to the Horombo hut, where you will have hot washing water, rest, an evening meal and overnight. Day 3: Horombo hut (3720m) - Acclimatization day **Not part of the 5 Day Climb** | Food: B,L,D
  • 9. 4 Horombo hut is a village of huts perched on a small plateau, with buildings similar to Mandara, but with a total capacity of 160 climbers! Usually bustling with hikers, guides, porters, and with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. You will meet both ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and night at Horombo are for additional acclimatization. To hike towards the Mawenzi-Saddle, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way (about 3 hours up and 1.5 hours down). This hike will further assist with the process of acclimatization. Remember to drink enough water and move slowly! All meals for the day are provided at the hut. Retire to bed early and get a last good night of rest. Day 4: Horombo hut (3720m) - Kibo hut (4700m) Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 15 km | Habitat: Alpine desert | Food: B,L,D After breakfast, you now continue your ascent into the Alpine desert habitat. From Horombo, there are two trails to the "Saddle" (which refers to the area between Mawenzi and Kibo's peaks). There is an upper route (right-hand fork) and a lower (left-hand fork). The upper route (right hand fork) will be very familiar, as you will have climbed most of it the previous day towards Mawenzi hut. It is very stony and eroded. The recommended lower route (left-hand fork) is much easier and takes nearly an hour, and it also passes the last watering point at 4130m. You will have to fill your water bottles with all the water you need until your return to Horombo hut in two nights' time (unless you are willing to buy Mineral water at Kibo hut). Once again, remember to slow down and drink enough water!! Situated in the barren Alpine desert is Horombo hut, a stone build blockhouse with bunk beds for 60 climbers but no streams with water nearby. It is, however, possible to buy mineral water and soft drinks at the camp office. There are platform toilets behind the hut. The summit is now a different 1195m up, and you will make your final ascent the same night. Prepare your equipment, ski stick and thermal clothing for your summit bid.
  • 10. 5 Replace your headlamp and camera batteries, and make sure you have a spare set available as well. To avoid your drinking water freezing, put it in a thermal flask. Finally, go to bed at around 18h00 to 19h00 and get as much sleep as possible. Day 5: SUMMIT ATTEMPT Kibo hut (4700m) Uhuru Peak (5895m) Horombo hut (3720m) Hiking time: 7 to 8 hours to Uhuru-Peak - 4 hours to descend to Horombo | Distance: 6 km ascent – 9 km descent | Habitat: Stone and ice-capped summit | B,L,D You will rise around midnight, and after some tea and biscuits, you shuffle off into the night, where the going gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman'sGillman's point (5 681m), located on the crater rim. This section is steep with many stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort. Probably the most demanding section of the entire route. Do the Kili shuffle and move slowly. From Gillman'sGillman's Point, you will typically encounter snow up to Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Total exhilaration and satisfaction - you made it! Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will take photographs before the 3-hour descent back to Kibo hut. After a short rest, you gather all the gear you left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours) for your overnight. The return to Horombo hut will seem surprisingly fast compared to the ascent. The total time spent walking on this day is around 14 hours, so be prepared for a very tough day. Later in the evening, you enjoy your last dinner (with soft drinks and beer for sale at the camp office) on the mountain and a well-earned sleep filled with memories and stirring emotions. Day 6: Horombo hut (3720m) - Marangu Gate (1980m) Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours | Distance: About 18 km | B,-,D After breakfast, you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara hut down to the Marangu gate. In a register, you sign your name and details at Marangu gate, and successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman'sGillman's Point (5685m) are issued a green certificate, and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m), receive gold certificates. Drive back to Moshi. Machame Route A day before the climb, you receive climb orientation and check your climbing tools. Day 1: Machame Gate (1490m) to Machame camp (2980m) Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 18 km | Habitat: Mountain forest | B,-,D
  • 11. 6 Your day starts early with a briefing, breakfast, and a 45-minute drive from Moshi (910m) to the Machame village (1490m). The guides and porters prepare and pack the supplies and your equipment in the village. You will receive a lunch pack, and you can also buy mineral water in the village. Depending on the condition of the road, it is possible to drive from the village to the Machame gate, but if not, the muddy 3 km walk will take about 1 hour to complete. You start your ascent after registering at the gate office. You immediately enter the rainforest. There is a strong possibility of rain in the woods, transforming the trail into a soggy, muddy and slippery experience. You will have a welcome lunch stop about halfway and reach the Machame camping area in the late afternoon. Day 2: Machame camp (2980m) Shira camp (3840m) Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 9 km | Habitat: Moorland | B,L,D You rise early at Machame camp, and after breakfast, you climb an hour or so to the top of the forest and then for 2 hours at a gentler gradient through the moorland zone. After a short lunch and rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau. By now, you will be able to see in an easterly direction the Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. You are now due west of Kibo, and after a short hike, you will reach the Shira campsite at 3 840m. The porters will boil drinking and wash water before serving dinner. The night at this exposed camp will even be colder than the previous night, with temperatures dropping below freezing. Day 3: Shira (3840m), Lava Tower (4630m), Barranco camp (3950m) Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 15 km Habitat: Semi-desert | B,L,D The route now turns east into a semi-desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower, where you reach an altitude of 4630m after about a 5 hours walk. Lunch is served in a designated area before ascending the rocky scree path to Lava Tower (4630m). This day is definitely, the most challenging day so far. Around this point, some climbers will start to feel breathlessness, irritability, and headaches for the first time. After lunch, you descend by almost 680m to the Barranco camping area. After reaching the high altitude of 4600m at Lava Tower, the true acclimatization benefit of this day becomes clear. This descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers excellent opportunities to take beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait to prepare your dinner.
  • 12. 7 Day 4: Barranco camp (3950m) Barafu camp (4550m) Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 13 km | Habitat: Alpine desert | B,L,D After spending a night at the Great Barranco Wall (a very imposing sight at first), you make your way up this excellent looking obstacle, which in the end, usually turns out more accessible than what you anticipated. Finally, topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you now appreciate how beautiful Kilimanjaro is. The route then heads down through the Karanga Valley over intervening ridges and valleys and joins the Mweka route. Turn left up the ridge, and after another hour or so, you reach Barafu Hut. The last water stop is the Karranga Valley, as there is no water at Barafu camp. Barafu is the Swahili word for "ice", and it is a bleak and inhospitable camping area to spend the night. Exposed to the ever-present gales, the tents are pitched on a narrow, stony, and dangerous ridge. Ensure that you familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid accidents. The summit is now a different 1345m up, and you will make the final ascent the same night. Prepare your equipment, ski stick and thermal clothing for your summit attempt. This should include the replacement of your headlamp and camera batteries, and make sure you have a spare set available. It will be wise to carry your water in a thermal flask to prevent freezing. Finally, go to bed at around 19h00 and get some precious rest and sleep. Day 5: SUMMIT ATTEMPT Barafu camp (4550m) Uhuru Peak (5895m) Mweka (3100m) Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak | 7/8 hours to descend to Mweka | Distance: About 7 km ascent – 23 km descent | Habitat: Stone and ice-capped summit | B,L,D You will rise around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits, you shuffle off into the night. You will head northwesterly and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This 6-hour walk to Stella point is, for many climbers, mentally and physically the most challenging on the route. At Stella Point (5685m), you will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you will typically encounter snow on your 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak.
  • 13. 8 The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop here for too long, as it will be challenging to start again due to the cold and Fatigue. Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life. The walk back to Barafu from the summit takes about 3 hours. Here you will have a well- earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear before heading down to Mweka hut (3100m). The route is not challenging and will take you down the rock and scree path into the moorland and eventually into the forest. The camp is situated in the upper forest, and mist or rain can be expected late afternoon. Dinner and washing water will be prepared. Day 6: Mweka camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m) Hiking time: 3 hours | Distance: About 15 km | Habitat: Forest | B,-,D After an early and well-deserved breakfast, it is a short 3-hour scenic hike back to the Park gate. At Mweka Gate, you sign your name and details in a register where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5685m) are issued green certificates, and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. From the Mweka Gate, you will continue down back to Moshi town!
