6. This campaign was created to reverse the ‘negative’ image that physics has with many young people.
IOP It needed to show young people, from different ethnic backgrounds, using physics in non lab-based,
exciting hands-on careers. The posters have been very successful.

IOP country. It showed how physics is linked directly with the everyday world and developments in the very
relevant science of the future.

the physics of Earth science
Physics gives us the ultimate designer materials for
all sorts of applications. We can grow polymers in
cress cells, sort polymers using electrostatics, and
recycle or biodegrade polymers.
With physics we can make:
• polymers that conduct electricity and emit light
• metals and polymers that remember their original
shape and spring back at their trigger temperature
• polymers that biodegrade at a known temperature
or after a given time
• polymers that make fuel cells to drive the ideal, zero
pollution, electric car
• fabrics that translate movement into speech.

promotional posters for the University. A vibrant, youthful feeling was created as
posters complex themes were distilled down to powerful visual.

Theoretical Nuclear Physics Probing the structure
of the subatomic world
For over 40 years, the theoretical nuclear physics
group at the University of Surrey has been making
world-leading and exciting discoveries. Today, modelling
the workings of atomic nuclei is still one of the most
exciting areas in scientific research. The nuclear theory
group at Surrey is the largest in the UK and one of the
largest and most respected in the world.
Our research focuses on several strands:
4
• Development of few-body models of nuclear reactions
and the study of reaction mechanisms to interpret
new data
• Interpretation of low energy nuclear reaction data
of interest in astrophysics
• The study of cluster structures in light exotic nuclei and
new phenomena such as neutron halos
• The development of new mathematical models of
nuclear structure for heavy nuclei far from stability
1 Theoretical nuclear physics research at Surrey is
an integral part of the international activity in radioactive-
beams science focusing on the structure of exotic
states of nuclear and hadronic matter and modelling
their reactions.
