This chapter discusses identity and its role in culture. It defines identity as a person's self-image derived from their socialization experiences. Identity is abstract, dynamic, and people can have multiple identities. Social identities like race, ethnicity, gender, nationality help set people apart. Identity develops largely through group membership and is expressed through behaviors, clothing, language and customs. Stereotyping, prejudice, racism, and ethnocentrism are risks to identity that can hinder intercultural communication, but contact with other groups and education can help reduce these risks.
