 Originated from latin word “Communis” –
Common.
 Communication as an act by which a person
shares the knowledge, feelings and ideas in
way such that each gain a common
understanding of the message.
 Communication is the force by which an
individual communicator transmits stimuli to
modify the behavior of other individual.
 Communication is the process by which messages
are transferred from source to receiver.
 Van Den Ban and Hawkins (1988) defined
communication as the process of sending and
receiving messages through channels which
establishes common meanings between a
source and a receiver.
 Leagans (1961) defined It is a process by which
two or more people exchange ideas, facts,
feelings or impressions in way that each gains a
common understanding of the message.
Information:
 Basic requirement of adapting and adjusting
oneself to the environment is information.
 What is going on in the environment which
concern the people.
 Getting or giving information underlies all
communication functions either directly or
indirectly.
Command or instructive function:
 Those who are hierarchically superior in the
family, society, organization initiate
communication.
 For the purpose of informing their
subordinates or for the purpose of telling
them what to do, how to do n when to do.
 More observable in formal organization.
Influence or persuasive
 According to Berlo (1960) the sole purpose of
communication is to influence people.
 Persuasive function of communication is to
induce people, is extremely important for
extension in changing their behavior in the
desirable direction.
Integrative function:
 Integration or of continuously offsetting any
disintegration at the interpersonal or at
organizational level.
 This helps to maintain individual, societal or
organizational stability and identity.
 The index of communication may not always
be a positive reaction.
 Therefore, it is essential that the
transmission of facts or information is carried
in such a manner that the meaning intended
and the use of message is understood by the
communicates so that is become a two way
process.
