2. Let’s play a game. You are a teacher
of these three individual students and
your only goal is to reel them into
learning. In two to three sentences,
respond how you, the teacher, would
do-so. Go to the following link to
respond. Go ahead
what was missing from these pictures
were the names of these students,
which should be learned day 1. Let’s
see how learning about these
students can make what is called
Personalized Learning a style for you
to use this year and onward.”

3. At the end of this
lesson, you will be
able to
a. Define Personalized Learning
b. Interpret why this framework is relevant to
the instructional design field
c. Recommend to your cohort how to design
with these principles in mind
4. Stimulate Recall of
Prior Knowledge
• Have other teachers in your life asked how
you learn?
• if the pace of the learning was too fast or too
slow?
• What about if the environment where the
learning takes place is conducive?
• Or, lastly and most importantly, how do you
successfully show mastery of your learning?
5. Identify Key Concepts
& Terms:
i. Personalized Learning – “instruction in which the pace of learning and the
instructional approach are optimized for the needs of each learner. Learning
objectives, instructional approaches, and instructional content (and its
sequencing) all may vary based on learner needs. In addition, learning
activities are meaningful and relevant to learners, driven by their interests,
and often self-initiated” (U.S. Department of Education in the 2016 National Ed
Tech Plan).
ii. Learner Agency – “empowering each learner to take ownership to their
learning, to have a voice and choice in their learning with the understanding
and ability to take action around their learning” (Kathleen McClaskey 2019)
iii. Flexible Learning Environments – Flexibility in learning spaces can be both
physical (e.g.: reconfigurable room design, moveable furniture, portable
technology) and abstract (e.g.: a space that can respond to changes in
“demographic shifts, community needs, or policy mandates”) (Monahan,
2002, p. 1)
iv. Individual Mastery – “a teacher and a student define what is learned, how
learning happens and when mastery is reached” (5 Lessons Learned in
Pioneering Personalized Mastery Learning 2016)
v. Personal Learning Paths – “unique road maps developed with each student
toward the learning objectives they need to master” (Digital Promise,
Customized Learning Paths)
vi. Learner Profiles - “refers to a wide variety of ways in which learners vary in
how they prefer to deal with content, process, and product. Learning profile
includes attention to intelligence preferences, learning styles, and cultural
and gender differences” (Differentiation for Learning Profile, ASCD, 2011)
6. Provide Learning
Guidance.
What will this look like? How would you
achieve this?
Instructional Support – I will provide a
prompt after each video for the learners
to think through and how they’d model
personalized learning for their students.
Model varied learning strategies – I will
help learners visualize the content by
providing an infographic; They will have
access to this in order to refer back:

nalizing-learning-infographic/
7. How can you help the learners process this new
information? What will you ask them to do? How
can they practice what they are learning?
i. Learners be tasked to do a matching game
where they will place the correct examples I
provide to recall what personalized learning is
and is on a Google Form.
ii. At the end of the lesson, learners will compose
a personalized plan about the students they
met at the beginning of the training through a
Google Form.
Elicit Performance.
8. Provide Feedback.
How can you help provide feedback to the
learner on their new knowledge?
-Learners will answer the matching, prompt
questions, etc. through Google Forms so they
will receive immediate feedback to assess and
facilitate the learning.
9. Assess
Performance.
How will you assess whether the
students have obtained the learning
outcomes?
I will ask learner to answer a variety of
questions that align to the objectives
throughout the training and responses
through a Google Form. They will also he
encouraged to email me at
shawnk@bgsu.edu to ask for any questions
or if they have any concerns.
Alternatively, they will respond in a
paragraph detailing a fictitious or real
student they will personalize learning for
including the student’s learning style,
school environment, pacing, environment
and more in a paragraph.
10. How might you help the learner ensure the new
knowledge, skills, or abilities can transfer?
Enhance Retention
& Transfer to Job.
I will summarize the key concepts and terms
while providing a familiar infographic to
enhance retention:
11. Think through all details and include technology.
