1. POETRY SCRAPBOOK
Mrs. Kitchens
The object of this assignment is for you to compile a group of poems that you like. You will
choose five published poems, one song lyric, and compose one original composition. All of
these will include illustrations in a tasteful, decorative scrapbook. You will also design a cover,
illustrate the cover, and bind the scrapbook in some creative fashion (simply stapling it will not
cut the mustard). Hopefully, this assignment will expose you to new types of poems and new
authors.
Requirements
Creatively bound and Illustrated Covers – Ten points
Front cover decorated with illustrations
Creative Title
Make sure your name, date, and class period are on the inside of the front cover.
Your back cover does not have to be illustrated.
Table of Contents – Ten points
Give titles, authors, and page numbers
This should be the first page in your scrapbook.
Five poems plus one original composition plus one song lyric – Sixty points
Five poems must be from published works (do not print pages directly from the
internet – rewrite or retype) All published poems must be by different authors.
Your original composition must be well composed and insightful. It does not have to
rhyme but must be lyrically balanced.
The song lyric cannot contain distasteful (inappropriate) passages.
Copy the work and author’s name into your scrapbook (including your own).
Each work must be illustrated. At least three of your works must be illustrated
with your own personal drawings. The other four may be drawings, cut outs from
magazines, or computer-generated designs. Each work must have a border
around the page and all illustrations must be related to the poem (example: a poem
about death might have wreaths, caskets, and mourners as a theme – be creative).
One paragraph description for each poem concerning why you selected this poem
to include in your scrapbook. What is the poem’s “emotional value” to you? Typed or
printed – no cursive. Must be on a separate page from the poem itself. Must be
bordered but does not have to be decorated. What you choose to write might follow
the theme of the work or remind you of something significant about the work or the
author.
Grade: Ten points for each of the above for a total of 80 points.
The other twenty points will come from creativity, neatness, and
appropriateness of illustrations.
NOTE: If you choose to type, there are no restrictions on type size or font. And
remember, I expect you to be creative.
Regarding your choice of poems: No distasteful lyrics
All submissions past the due date will be penalized 20 points.
