AFFORDABLE SOLAR HOUSING FOR FARMWORKERS
2. Dear Friend,
Thank you for your interest in the UC Davis Solar Decathlon team. The U.S. Department
of Energy Solar Decathlon is a competition that promotes energy-efficient residential
design. UC Davis is one of eighteen collegiate teams selected to design and build zero-net-
energy (ZNE) homes for the October 2015 competition in Irvine, California.
Participation in the Solar Decathlon provides exposure for student teams and sponsors
alike. In 2013 the Solar Decathlon attracted:
Over 2 billion total media impressions
More than 3 million website views
More than 1,750 online articles
350 articles in almost 150 publications around the world
200 interviews worldwide and 150 radio interviews
Over 6,000 news stories, including national headlines and stories
UC Davis’ team, Aggie Sol, is developing affordable energy-efficient housing that
contributes to the well-being and dignity of farmworkers, some of the hardest working yet
least rewarded segments of America’s workforce. Focusing on affordability, our team is
developing innovative energy efficient technologies. These technologies have the potential
to lower the cost of ZNE housing, thereby making sustainable living attainable by all.
We are looking for individuals and companies who share our vision of promoting
affordable ZNE living. Your commitment to the Aggie Sol team is an investment in the
next generation of energy efficiency experts and an opportunity to increase the market for
ZNE homes. Enclosed is our sponsorship packet with more information about the
competition, our team, and involvement opportunities. Together we can improve our
communities, our world, and our future.
Welcome to the Aggie Sol team.
Sincerely,
Ben White, NCARB, LEED AP

3. Project Goal
AGGIE SOL
Substandard farmworker housing is a significant concern that reaches far beyond the
issue of affordability. Not only are some farmworkers asked to pay high rent for housing,
but they often find themselves living in crowded, unsanitary and run-down buildings.
Aggie Sol’s goal is to design an affordable home that provides comfort, safety, and a
better quality of life for farmworkers as well as other low-income and underserved
communities. To be successful, our design will address the numerous health, living and
cost concerns associated with some farmworkers’ current housing conditions. These
include lack of cooling, poor air quality, contamination from pesticides, and
lack of affordability.
Our team believes we can design a zero-net energy home that will serve workers at a
price that public and private housing providers can afford. In our quest to develop
housing at the lowest possible price, we are also researching and incorporating low-cost
efficiency technologies. Our house will demonstrate cutting-edge energy efficiency
research from our university focusing on “smart home” innovations that will manage
energy inputs and losses. High-efficiency lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, hot water,
and other appropriate technologies, will be driven by grid-tied photovoltaic and
photovoltaic-thermal hybrid panels. By reducing costs, these technologies will have the
potential to make well-designed ZNE housing available to communities of all income levels.
4. Background of Aggie Sol
UC Davis is a comprehensive public research university in
California’s agricultural heartland with an intense focus on
teaching, research and public service to advance the human
condition. Consistently ranked as one of the top public
universities in America, we are dedicated to using the best talent,
technology, and know-how to tackle the hardest problems facing
our state, country, and world.
Mindful of these objectives, UC Davis has actively invested in
ZNE initiatives, having partnered with outside entities to develop
and host West Village, the largest planned ZNE community in the
country. With this development and the University’s signature
energy efficiency and transportation research programs sited
there, UC Davis has asserted itself as the national leader in ZNE
design and operation.
This existing foundation of ZNE expertise gives our team of
students in engineering, design, landscape architecture, and
sociology the support to successfully design and build energy-
efficient housing for farmworkers. We see the U.S. Department
of Energy Solar Decathlon 2015 as an opportunity to improve
both the quality of life for farmworkers and the condition of the
environment- a goal that is consistent with our aspirations to
become responsible citizens of this nation and planet.
