IMPORTANCE OF VIRTUAL SOCIAL SPACE AND HOW IT HELPS TO MODIFY SOCIAL STRUCTURE
Introduction:-
The concept of “space” is one of the most fundamental of geographical concepts. The concept of
“geographical space” is a relational one. The space in which human activities take place cannot be
ignored. Space is also looked upon as something where an event takes place. Social space is that place
that it is perceived and used by social groups. Social space is a combination of perceived and real space,
according to Buttimer. The subjective components of social space are supplied by the social groups
themselves whereas the objective that is the real components is themselves only socially significant
elements of the whole environment. The destiny of social space reflected the complementary and
consequently the degree of interaction „between groups‟. There are two ways to describe it. Firstly,
Formal space, which emphasizes the delimitation of social religions and analyzing mosaics of such
regions in terms of various sub-groups in a society. The second is functional space and it is concerned
with dynamic elements such as changes, movements, nodal organization, channels of circulation and of
communications.
Importance of virtual social space:-
Virtual communities are used for a variety of social and professional groups; interaction between
community members varies from personal to purely formal. For example: - An email distribution
list operates on an informational level.
This abstract interaction emphasizes the reciprocity element of the unwritten social contract
between community members.
The widespread use of the Internet and virtual communities by millions of diverse users for
socializing is a phenomenon that raises new issues for researchers and developers.
People communicate their social identities or culture code through the work they do, the way they
talk, the clothes they wear, their eating habits, domestic environments and possessions, and use of
leisure time.
Usability testing in virtual communities can ensure users are communicating effectively through
social and semiotic codes and maintenance of social realities and identities.
Participatory culture plays a large role in online and virtual communities. In participatory culture,
users feel that their contributions are important and that by contributing, they are forming
meaningful connections with other users.
All of these functions encourage people to form a community, large or small, on the virtual space.

How virtual space helps to modify social structure:-
Communication for social change, a possible strategy in achieving sustainability and development
places the people of the community in the center of the communication process. Technology then
becomes implemented by people in their social and economic contexts and results in a major
shaping process. This in turn could contribute to empowerment and social change.
Communication are considered useful in themselves and for promoting pre-determined reforms,
participatory communication may have greater potential to contribute to locally-owned reforms
and sustainable change at various levels of society.
Advancing the time geographic framework in its ability of exploring processes of virtual
communication alerting physical activity opportunities. Extending some concepts of the classical
time geography from a physical space to a virtual space for representing and exploring virtual
interaction patterns.
Through examining the relationship of human activities and external constraints in a space-time
context, classical time geography provides a basic framework to conceptualize, represent, and
explore human activities and interactions. Then it will summarize different extended time-
geographic frameworks for human interactions in both virtual and physical spaces, for uncertain
activities, and for activity prediction.
